Emulating Yahoo IM 6.0

The first 'rule' of Windows "emulation" in Linux - don't do it if you can avoid it! :D

If there are Linux apps that do the job, use them.

1) Yahoo still has a Linux version - the Redhat .rpm build should work on Mandrake. http://messenger.yahoo.com/ (I fail a dependency -glibc 2.2, needs glibc2.3 on Mdk 9.0, newer installs e.g. 10.0 should be OK)

The Linux version of yahoo messenger I did have installed on Mandrake (0.99.19) is no longer supported by Yahoo and it won't connect :(

2) Yahoo has an on-line (java browser) messenger client http://jpager.yahoo.com/jpager/messenger.html

2) Mandrake has a couple of multi-client messenger clients eg everybuddy gaim

3) Last resort - WINE it.

I actually prefer Trillian (and I have wine'd that because I don't like everybuddy!)

failing that... (and I know trillian doesn't provide full Yahoo features) then by all means use WINE to install the Windows Yahoo Messenger. You'll need to make sure you have several Windows system binaries installed.

The EASIEST WAY to do this is with frank's WineTools. http://winetools.frankscorner.org/

smurfy, I have already tried all the work arounds you've mentioned. What I want is to emulate Yahoo! Messenger 6.0 with Cedega. I don't have Wine and after all the awfull experiences with it I'm not going to install it ever on my PC.

This is what happens when I try to emulate it:

[root@Alex Messenger]# ls
alpha.reg       kdu_v32M.dll   skins/              ymsgipdl.ini
asw.dll         licenseM.txt   stock.dll           ymsgip.dll
AswRes.dll      login.swf      tsd2.dll            ymsgr.ini
avthost.swf     Media/         UNWISE.EXE*         Ymsgr_tray.exe*
d32-fw.dll      msvcp71.dll    ViewInfo.reg        YPager.exe*
default.reg     msvcr71.dll    XMLParse.dll        ypager.exe.manifest
emote.dat       MyYahoo.dll    Xmltok.dll          ypagerps.dll
emote_user.dat  n2pclient.dll  yacscom.dll         YServer.exe*
filter1.txt     nofriend.html  yacsui.dll          yupdater.exe*
flfl_bg.gif     pcre.dll       YahooBridgeLib.dll  YView/
ft60.dll        privacy.txt    ycrwin32.dll        ywcupl.dll
idle.dll        proxy.dll      ygxa_2.dll          ywcvwr.dll
INSTALL.LOG     res_msgr.dll   Yml.dll
[root@Alex Messenger]# cedega YPager.exe
[root@Alex Messenger]#

And that's it. No error message no nothing.

you aint gonna be getting the windows version working with the nature of that program, use the Linux version, there's an rpm here:

http://download.yahoo.com/dl/unix/rh9.ymes....0.4-1.i386.rpm

it won't have all the features of the windows one, but its the best you're gonna get. Also, I am sure gaim does file transfers, i think you need to update your gaim.

Finally, if you're daring and after video or voice, grab gaim-vv, gaim-vv is a fork of standard gaim and it supports video and voice, although i think it's pretty heavily in development and is probably pretty unstable.

Iphitus, I know about the Unix versions of Yahoo!. I used the RH9 YIM before I managed to install Gaim. I don't want to have anything to do with it again. All I want is a recent version of Yahoo! IM for Linux. If you say it can't be emulated with cedega then .... I guess I'll have to try something else.

I use Gaim currently. It works good enough .... but lacks one important thing: I can't buzz.

Smurfy, I'll try Gyach when I get home. Now I have some driving lessons :D
