Ive read seveal postings about aumix. I dont have aumix. Also if you are using arts, make sure the arts driver is selected in xmms if that's where the problem is occuring. Also if you are using arts, make sure the arts driver is selected in xmms if that's where the problem is occuring. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> you can also try alsamixer at the command line, it uses characters to draw the graphs but you'll get bargraph for absolutely everything.
