AgelessStranger
Hi Ive recently installed Mandrake 10.0 official and everything was going great until today when I was trying to move my back up MP3s onto my hard drive. Basically every time I put in a new disk the display just had a bunch of %3F signs. I discovered that if I right clicked on the cdrom icon that I could eject them and this worked fine the first time then each time after that it would just say eject /dev/cdrom failed anyway so now comes the real big problem. Now when I boot into Linux It doesn't go to kde any more it is just a black screen. I logged in as me then typed kde and I got an error message saying that: line 1 of /etc/XE86Config-4 (Im fairly sure that was the filename) was not a keyword (or something along those lines) So I got into that file to see what it was and here is what is in it: closed(53c2697c): opened(53c2697c):devices:/devhddmntcdrom closed(53c2697c):file:/mnt/cdrom opened(53c2697c):file:/mnt/cdrom/BUFCD5 closed(53c2697c):file:/mnt/cdrom/BUFCD5 opened(53c2697c):file:/mnt/cdrom/ closed(53c2697c):file:/mnt/cdrom/ opened(53c2697c):file:/mnt/ closed(53c2697c):file:/mnt/ opened(53c2697c):file:/mnt/big closed(53c2697c):file:/mnt/big opened(53c2697c):file:/mnt/big/mp3 closed(53c2697c):file:/mnt/big/mp3 opened(53c2697c):file:/mnt/big/ closed(2d2550f8): opened(2d2550f8):devices:/devhddmntcdrom closed(2d2550f8):file:/mnt/cdrom opened(2d2550f8):file:/mnt/ closed(2d2550f8):file:/mnt/ opened(2d2550f8):file:/mnt/cdrom closed(53c2697c):file:/mnt/big/ opened(53c2697c):file:/mnt/big/mp3 close(53c2697c):file:/mnt/big/mp3 close(2d2550f8):file:/mnt/cdrom closed(6ab44e72): opened(6ab44e72):devices:/devhddmntcdrom closed(6ab44e72):file:/mnt/cdrom opened(6ab44e72):file:/mnt/cdrom/%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F closed(6ab44e72):file:/mnt/cdrom/%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F opened(6ab44e72):file:/mnt/cdrom/ closed(6ab44e72):file:/mnt/cdrom/ opened(6ab44e72):file:/mnt/cdrom/%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%94%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3FM%3F closed(6ab44e72):file:/mnt/cdrom/%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%94%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3FM%3F opened(6ab44e72):file:/mnt/cdrom/%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%94%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3FM%3F/%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%94%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3FM%3F closed(6ab44e72):file:/mnt/cdrom/%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%94%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3FM%3F/%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%94%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F% notice the lots of %3F's has my mucking around with my cd rom done something bad or is there some other error? sorry about the long post Thanks
arctic
in order to get access to kde try the folllowing: at prompt, log in as root, then type in "XFdrake" and set up your video modes. then exit and reboot, now, you should be able to log in into kde again. with the cd-rom. you say, you ejected it. okay, but did you mount/unmount them properly afterwards? AgelessStranger
Yeah when I used the eject thing I unmounted it but it was telling me that it was busy and that it could not do it.
arctic
hmmm. maybe unmount is only possible for root on your system. anyway, which cd-rom drive do you have? maybe some info on that one helps to clear the matter... :)
AgelessStranger
Thanks heaps! I got KDE working again. Why would it just make changes like that for no apparent reason? Oh and I got the cd rom issue sorted as well, so once again thanks for your help arctic.
