Actualy mandrake uses both sort of.

 

the actual block devises are names with numbers and can be found in /dev/tts (new style), but thankfully, it also put's symlinks to the onld style names in there for you. So, if you want the serial port that windows would call com1, you can look in /dev/ttx/0 OR in /dev/ttyS0 doesn't matter.

 

As for the processes, I'm not sure. Mauybe somebody else can fill in the blanks?
