CDROM not keeping track of files.

Hello:

I'm experiencing some strange behavior with my

CDROM drive. It will mount a CD fine. I can eject

that CD and insert a different one fine. I can

navigate the CD, and copy files from the CD one at

a time. However, if I try to copy multiple files

then it loses 'track' of the files that are on the

CD. This issue also occurs when logged in as

root.

If I put in a CD and copy one file to the desktop,

the file copies and I can do that as many times as

I wish. (largest file tested - 129 Mb)

If I drag multiple files to the desktop and try to

copy, then after about 60 Mb a dialog box appears

saying that the file doesn't exist. If I then

refresh that window, only the file that "doesn't

exist" is there and all the others are gone.

(Occasionaly this is successful, if the largest

file being copied is less than 8 Mb)

If I drag a folder from the CD to the desktop,

then the same issue happens except after about 40

Mb, and the folder remains in the cd window but

its contents are gone.

If after this issue occurs, I open a terminal

window as root, navigate to /mnt/cdrom, and ls, it

lists all the folders and files like this:

[real file name]: No such file or directory.

[some other file]: No such file or directory.

[and another file]: No such file or directory.

...

When I copy a file to the desktop, it is given

read and execute permissions only. Regardless of

the file type.

If I try to recopy the same file from the CD, I

get the same error stating that the file on the CD

does not exist. If I had tried to copy that file

to a different location like the documents folder

then it would have copied fine.

I've erased the hd so there's no lack of space.

Applications run fine. (I'm actually quite

impressed at how fast Mandrake 9 is compared to v

8.2.)

I've tried using the control center to modify the

CD settings.

I've edited the cdrom line in my fstab file

various ways.

Here's a copy:

/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

/dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

/dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom supermount

dev=/dev/hdb,fs=iso9660,ro,exec,--,dev 0 0

dev=/dev/fd0,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,

none /mnt/floppy supermount codepage=850,umask=0 0

0

/dev/hdc1 /mnt/windows vfat

iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

none /proc proc defaults 0 0

/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

(There are three "none"s in there. I'm not worried

about the floppy but I am curious about the other

two.)

I've tried it with auto, noauto, iso9660, iso8859,

with and without supermount, with and without

user, and the example in the man pages.

For the first section of the cdrom line, I've

tried:

none

/mnt/cdrom

/dev/hdb

/dev/cdrom

/dev/cdrom0

/dev/cdroms/cdrom

/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/cd

My mstab file correctly follows any changes that I

make to fstab.

I've tried removing the

/lib/dev-state/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/cd

file and rebooting.

Is there a file that keeps track of the items on a

removable disc, and if so, what other files point

to it, or is there an application that's

responsible for this?

Suggestions and advise would be greatly

appreciated,

Michael

P.S. All CD's work fine when booted to Windows drive.
