Guest jamesarcher
Just got myself a copy of Mandrake 10.0 and everything installed ok all my hardware detected perfectly and my ADSL was enabled by default. I was quite supprised being a previous MS Windows user and basic Red Hat 9 user that the system did not need configuring. The thing thats bugging me at the moment is that altho my radeon installed itself correctly and hardware 3d acceleration is enabled there is verty slow and choppy performance on 3d apps such as Tux Racer. I have tried to install the new ATi drivers (file name: fglrx-4.3.0-3.0.i386.rpm) for linux and get the following error: Installation failed: file /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 from install of fglrx-4.3.0-3.9.0 conflicts with file from package libxfree86-4.3-30mdk I looked on the ATi site and they suggested the following commands: rpm -Uh --force fglrx-4.3.0-3.9.0.i386.rpm With that command i get the following error: error: cannot open lock file ///var/lib/rpm/RPMLOCK in exclusive mode error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm The other comman suggested was: rpm -e --nodeps XFree86-Mesa-libGL With that command i get the following error: error: package XFree86-Mesa-libGL is not installed Mandrake itself runs smooth and quick its just the gfx (runs 2D apps quick its just the 3D) System Specs Intel Pentium 4 1.6GHz 512MB DDR266 Maxtor Diamond Max 9 7200RPM 80GB (30GB Mandrake 50GB Windows) Sony 52X CDRW Artec 16X DVD-ROM ATi Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB 600MHz Memory Clock Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Player 6.1 Hauppage WinTV Go! When i was on Red Hat 9 the radeon drivers would install but i couldnt access them so i had the same issue fast in 2D apps and slow in 3D its just like madrake has its own custom version of XFREE86 which is conflicting with the driver. I think if it was the same version it would install but i dont know how to do it So i'm a bit stuck Any help is well appritiated and if anyone knows how to install Microsoft Office (Preferably Excel) with Wine (or something similar) let me know

Guest mckiku
hello, the message error: cannot open lock file ///var/lib/rpm/RPMLOCK in exclusive mode error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm it is due to the fact that the Packages database is locked. To unlock the database you should delete it and then rebuild the database using the rpm --rebuilddb (all these as root) After this you may install the package as a user with rpm -i without problems
