Hi there.

as a quite new user to linux, I have got a couple of questions.

Some of them have a practical purpose, but the others I ask just of pure interest.

1.I have seen a couple of programs on the internet with the .tar.gz extension..

When I worked with one of those yesterday, I noticed that both .gz and .tar are some kind of compressed fils. As a earlyer windowsuser, it seamed quite odd. Files don't get smaller just because you zip them twice. What is the purpose?

2.I want to get my integrate sosound cardorking with mdk 10. I am using a asus a7v600-x card with a vt8237 southbridge. http://uk.asus.com/products/mb/socketa/a7v...-x/overview.htm

It seams as this card works in some way. I tries to play soundfiles, but there is nothing. Is there anything I can do to make the standard mandrake drivers to work?

3.Ok. Let's say that there is no way I can get mdk 10's standard drivers working with my soundcard. I that case I found a sosound driveror linux at http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=294.

Because I use the a disto with no seceratinpms for it, I have to use the Multiple Distribution Package. the little text over the download link tells me that this driver works with kernel 2.4.0 or above.

As you may know, mdk 10 runs on the 2.6.3-4 kernel. So when I downloaded the file, in theory it should work.

Then I cd into the right directory, got root, and ran rpm --rebuild <filename>.src.rpm.

(I have the 2.6.3-4 kernel installed)

and guess what? It didn't work.

What did I do wrong? and how can I by able to run rpm files for other kernel versons?

the install log and the readme can be found here --> www.home.no/znora/linux
