Guest 969696
At startup i get the following error ICH4: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev f9 PCI: Device 00:1f.1 not available because of resource collisions ICH4: (ide_setup_pci_device:) Could not enable device. I thought nothing about it until i recently found i had very low hard drives results. Using hdparm i got /dev/hdb: Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.35 seconds =365.71 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 12.69 seconds = 5.04 MB/sec This intel page gives details about the problem. Since the 845e chipset comes with ICH4... http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/linux/udma.htm I know i'm not the only one with this problem, how did you solve it ? Being a linux newbie, i don't know how to solve this. Thanks
Guest 969696
"The intel motherboards with the ICH4 controller have severe problems with kernel 2.4.19.16mdk." http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=mandrake-c...86168120385&w=
pmpatrick
Your not alone. We all feel your pain. Check this thread: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...=639&highlight= It's not just a Mandrake problem; it's a kernel problem with 2.4.19. People with the current versions of Knoppix and Suse based on the same kernel are having the same problem. The install will go, but you cannot enable dma. The new kernel, 2.4.20 will fix the problem and it works fine under 2.4.18(Redhat 8.0). They just blew it with 2.4.19.
