ADSL + alcatel speed touch pro

Hi, I have searched all over the place, and can't find anything specific to my problem.

Specs:

Alacatel speed touch pro - router/adsl modem

Realtek ethernet card (driver RTL-8139 within mandrake)

System :- Mandrake 9.0

Anyway, can't get the thing to access the internet at all within mandrake. Works perfectly on Windows, and also had Red Hat 8.0 on recently and I never had to configure a thing, automatically worked from day one. When installing Mandrake, I use the automatic detect, it asks me what internet connection method I use, and I select the ethernet option, not the ADSL one. Tried ADSL didn't work either. I've given it all the right info (same as in Windows), such as

Subnet mask 255.0.0.0

IP 10.0.0.1 (etho address)

Gateway 10.0.0.138 (address of router)

But nothing works. Please Help!! as I like the look of Mandrake over RH8, but if it is going to be hell to get a modem working, I will have to go back. I am sure it is something simple.

thanks Greg
