lets-eat-gary
Hi people, Have got Mandrake 10 Official installed and it's looking very nice. Just installed enemy terriotory - am going to be on that for a while! (Have just discovered the weather applet in the taskbar menu - i know it has been there in previous editions its just the 1st time i've seen it) I am confused though about which kernel to update to and what the difference is My computer is an athlon 1.4 gig (non XP) here is the list kernel-2.6.3.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm * i'm presently using this one kernel-enterprise-2.6.3.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.3.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm kernel-p3-smp-64GB-2.6.3.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm kernel-secure-2.6.3.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm kernel-smp-2.6.3.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm Is there anywhere i can find out the difference, also my house mate has an athlon XP barton 2600 processor - which kernel should he use Cheers people
phunni
enterprise kernels allow for high memory (above about 800MB) and mulitple processors I think that smp also relates to multiple processors . I you have neither high memory or mor than one processor then you don't need to use these kernels
lets-eat-gary
thanks for your responce phunni, what about - kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.3.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm is that just for systems over 4GB memory? The reason i ask is that i notice is has i686 in the title and i assume that relates to athlons - could be very wrong though! Cheers
aRTee
up 4GB kernels are for systems with more than 896MB of RAM and up to 4GB as the name says. If you have less than 896MB ram, don't worry, stick with what you're running.
