MDK9 Fonts so ugly (icewm)

Please anyone help me getting these ugly fonts off my machine. Esp. in icewm, the system fonts are so terribly big and if I use GDK_USE_XFT=0 its quite OK, but some german characters cannot be displayed properly.

Why can't the system simply use clean and neat fonts as before?

maybe we can forget the following, because dont know, what I did, but suddenly, it looks kinda OK as for the fontsizes.

Could it be due to removing some font line in XF86Config-4. I remarked the use of XFS and only left 75dpi, misc, ttf and mdk inside.

??

Whats it look like with GDK_USE_XFT=1?

they look blury on my laptop and no settings will change that, except not using XFT. Under pure gnome2 (from cooker) at least the sizes are OK, but under IceWM, e.g. the password dialog for MDKCC is so terribly big. In gnome, I can set font for size 8, then they're big, if I set to 6, its quite OK, but gnome grumbles about not a valid INT.

b4 what?

Before using this funny XFT, sorry to say that, but the usual clean X fonts were so good

Why should I go to PLF, when we have the Cooker?

Hi again,

now I'm fully confused.

When I start IceWM and open e.g. "gedit", the menu fonts are terribly big. When I open "gnome-control-center" then, change the fonts or the way of smoothing and then close g-c-c, "gedit" opens with nice tiny fonts.

When I restart X, all is back to square one.

What is this????

Thanks

That's what AA is.

Did'nt read it and go to the links? You need a hacked freetype2 pkg. Cooker won't give you that "for sure", though I'm sure it could be available, or will be. Why not just get one you no will enable XFT.

not using rox
Don't have to to use

GDK_USE_XFT=1

QT_XFT= TRUE (1 did nothing for me)

and

You'll also want to download some good fonts - truetype.tar.gz from sourceforge.net.

I don't know what to tell you on this.

How do you start Icewm?

Simply use the default from MDK9 - and startx

I use fluxbox and to us gnome settings, I have

gnome-settings-daemon

in my ~/.xinitrc , and use startx to start X.

How did you include the gnome-settings-daemon?

So far, I will go over all links you provided - this thread looks now almost like a tutorial, is't it?

Thanks a lot

In your HOME user folder you should find a .xinitrc file. Here's mine
########FONT######

export LC=C

export LC_ALL=C

QT_XFT=true

GDK_USE_XFT=1

########START PROGRAMS###########

#gkrellm &

(sleep 1; gkrellm -w) &

(sleep 2; play ~/sounds/Select.wav & exit) &

########SESSION########

(sleep 4; gnome-settings-daemon) &

#(sleep 5; esd -nobeeps) &

#(sleep 3; gnome-theme-properties) &

#(sleep 3; rox -l=MyPanel) &

#(sleep 45; aterm -tr -trsb +sb -sh 85 -fg blue -cr red -g 85x12+420+00 -e tail -f /var/log/messages) &

enable_X11_numlock &

#######start NET########

#(sleep 5; service syslog start) &

#(sleep 5; /home/ppp/7191) &

#Screen

(sleep 10; xset s off s noblank dpms 0 0 0) &

#start a WM

fluxbox

#exec /usr/X11R6/bin/fluxbox

#exec /usr/bin/startkde

#/usr/bin/startgnome

#gkrellm &=when I used gnome

(sleep 1; gkrellm -w) &=the -w is for fluxbox-to run gkrellm in the slit.

(sleep 2; play ~/sounds/Select.wav & exit) &=plays a startup sound

(sleep 4; gnome-settings-daemon) &=I know this allows the keyboard and mouse settings for gnome to be used in fluxbox, but I've never had a font problem so I don't know if it'll help. Starting this, also starts gconfd-2, esd, and bonobo-activation-run-query.

enable_X11_numlock &=enables the numlock

(sleep 10; xset s off s noblank dpms 0 0 0) &=turns off all powersaving features....xset does many things. See man xset. It's part of the X11R6-contrib pkg. If I didn't want to start the gnome-settings-daemon, or didn't have gnome installed, I could use it to set the mouse speed as well. You can also use it to specify a font folder for a user.

http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/docs/en/art...rtwiz-fonts.php See the User Install section.

export LC=C

and

export LC_ALL=C=enables gtk2 apps to use the artwiz-fonts for fluxbox.

Oh, and the (sleep x; ) specifies the order and delay of the starting of an app or execution of a command, so that the load is kept to a minimum and/ or to prevent conflicts. Like some times if the timing isn't right the starup wave won't work.

so far so good now. I just got the necessary files and the fonts don't look so ugly now.

The only way to get the XFT activated for any xft aware app, like gedit, galeon1.3, pan, etc, is to run "gnome-font-properties" after icewm started.

Your hint with gnome-settings-daemon does not solve that.

Any idea how to activate gnome-font-properties without having that window to be opened?

Two more questions (again):

1. the german characters will be displayed wrong only on this site, any german site will display them correct in galeon. Any idea why?

2. why is fontsize 6 invalid INT? It works great with this size.

thx

That'd be a question to pm the admins with.

Sorry, I have no idea.
