Guest fat_larry
If I have xmms playing and I launch OpenOffice should the sound buffer empty and the sound judder? Because it does. And not only if I open a (granted) mammoth app, even if i do other smaller tasks, the sound suffers and pauses. NOT GOOD. My machine is powerful enough, the buffers are set to the limit, what else can I do? my output is set as aRts.
Guest fat_larry
I just answered my own question! Basically I didn't have DMA enabled as default. Here's what I did in case anyone else is interested: I opened /etc/sysconfig/harddisks as root, and uncommented the line: # USE_DMA=1 Re-booted and now i get transfer rates many times better, and xmms doesn't have to fight for a share! The whole system is speeded up.
