Hello,

I can't seem to get Mandrake 10 installed either the CE edition or the 5cd Powerpack. All goes well until after selecting the packages. Once all the disks have been fed I get the same error : an error occured

run_program can't output in //tmp.drakx-stout.12 (mode '>').

I've verified the md5sums both the download iso's as well as the burned disks.I've also tried burning as low as 2x with Roxio's Easy CD DVD Creator 6, Nero 5.5 and Alcohol 120,

same results.

The reason I think it's a bug and not my hardware is after the above error your taken back to the installation menu to select the packages. I've tried various combinations and after awhile it seems to time out and I wind up at a termination screen. Amongst the text is the following :

Cannot open font file for fixed 12 at /usr/bin/perl-install/ugtk2.pm line 17

XLib : sequence lost (0x78f5070x6defd) in reply type 0x0! The program runinstall2 recieved an XWindows system error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was ^139'. (Details : seriel 429904 error_code 139 request_code 135 minor_code 7) (note to programmers : normally, X errors are reported asynchronously ; that is you will recieve the error awhile after causing it. To debug your program run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. you can then get a meaningful Backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error () function.)

Exited abnormally

(EE) FBDEV (0) : FBIOPAW_display : Invalid argument.

Sorry for the long post and if some of the above wasn't nesissary. Just trying to be thorough.

I haven't seen anyone else post any of the above here or other forums I've looked at.

Perhaps it's because of my comps config?

Abit NF7-s rev2 bios 23 Barton 2500 @ 200x11

2x 512 OZC 3500 el ddr Maxtor 40g on sata1 via a sata/pata converter Memorex Duel X-1 on ide1 master Lite-on 52246s slave ide1 Lite-on dvd-rom master ide2 550w Antec psu.

All thoughts, idea's welcome!

Thanks in advance.

Thanks aRTee and bvc for your replys. I did read the errata before but re-read it anyways. I tried all of your suggestions and eventually hit upon a combo that worked in a hacked way. I found a link on another website where someone had posted a bug report that sounded very close to my problems. The bug report had never been answered but it's what helped me devise a way of installing.

1. I formatted with another program other than Mandrake. I used Fedora Core 1 which has no issues with my set-up to set my partitions. I choose the minimal install to make sure the partitions were complete, had errors if I stopped early.

I imagine qparted would be faster off the knoppix cd but I'm not familiar enough with the commands...yet

2. Turned off APIC in my bios as well as enhance pci performance and cpu disconnect function those 2 were the cause of freezing during install. Set the ext-p2p discard time from default 30us to 1ms (timings for sata).

3. Popped in the Community Download edition...Note the Powerpack edition will not work here. At the initial screen hit f1 and typed in linux nolapic readonly=1

Start installing note the installer will ask if you want to use the linux partitions hit yes and only format the /root partition, choose your packages. Still get the run_program can't output in //tmp.drakx-stout.12 (mode '>'). error. At that point I hit the reset button and start the install program over choosing upgrade instead of install. With a bit of luck after the upgrade you'll be taken to the post install but at this point you'll have skipped the root password and setup users and start at installing the bootloader. Finish up the install set-up your config, but don't choose to install upgrades. If you do happen to freeze after the bootloader's installed it's ok just hit reset and at the first prompt choose failsafe the kernel will check itself and add the lost and found directories/files??(not sure exactly what it meant have to google later) and reboot itself shutting down properly.Choose failsafe again once the at the failsafe single user screen type in passwrd and set your root password. Reboot.

4. Now finally you can pop in the Powerpack edition again hit f1 and type in readonly=1 start the install choosing install not upgrade. the installer will again ask if you want to use the linux partitions again hit yes at the next screen make sure to uncheck the /root you don't want any partition formats at all. The installer will check for installs and you'll be asked for all 5 cd's then you'll finally see the full post install configurations finish up and enjoy.

Pain in the arse but I really do like Mandrake 10 .. Just finished downloading the Official .. I hope that install goes smoothly.. if not I'm sure the above will work yet again

Thanks for the welcome. I've been browsing here for a few days, you've got a nice friendly forum. Lot's of helpful info and links, I plan on hanging around a bit, and who knows in time I may actually be able to give some help in return :P

Quite a difference from the official mandrake forum I posted the same thing there and out of 20 something views not one single comment. <sigh>
