Wolf_Racer
Hi, I have a Dell GX110 with an Intel 810 graphics Card. I have installed Mandrake 10.0 (RC1). After I installed and login and try to run 'startx', I get the following error: GartInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (no such file or directory) I810(0) AGP GART support not available. I have read these forums and looked in the internet and have done the following but I am still am stuck: there is no agpgart file in /dev I cannot find agpgart anywhere on the system. When I try to run 'modprobe agpgart' is says it cannot find the module. I cannot find agpgart.o on the system. I did find agpgart.ko.gz in: /lib/modules/2.4.25-0.pre7.3mdk/kernel/drivers/char/agp. I have gunzip'ed this file and tried to move it into different directories but I cannot get modprobe agpgart to find it. I found a file called /etc/modprobe.conf and it has this line in it: alias agpgart intel-agp I cannot find intel-agp on the system. I did find intel-agp.ko.gz in /lib/modules/2.6.2-3mdk/kernel/drivers/char/agp/intel-agp.ko.gunzip when i run 'uname -r' it says 2.4.25-0.pre7.3mdk/. Not sure why I am not running 2.6.2-3mdk and I dont know how to change it, or if I should. I am hoping I am missing something simple. I would be grateful if anyone can help as I am stuck! Thanks Edited April 6, 2004 by Wolf_Racer

Wolf_Racer
Here is my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. I have not modified it. As I read this file, I also see I do not have a /dev/mouse. I followed all the install instructions and have tried to re-install multiple times. Ixthusdan
OK. The part toward the bottom that says "driver" "i810", change the i810 to vga and let's first see if we can get into x to boot with a generic driver. Don't expect the screen to look good, but we'll know if the x server is functioning correctly. After getting into x, you can get into the Mandrake Control Center and make changes with a test function in order to indentify the correct driver. One concern I have is that the media you are using is good. Three things are possible: 1) Bad burn 2) Bad download (use md5sum to verify) 3) Bad media But let's see if x works first. Wolf_Racer
Changed i810 to vga and got this error when starting startx: (EE) VGA(0) Virtual size (1280x960) (pitch 640) exceed video memory I tried to change the Virtual lines from 1280x960 to 640 480 in the XF86Config-4 file but got the same error. Is it also a concern I do not have a /dev/mouse file? when i run 'uname -r' it says 2.4.25-0.pre7.3mdk/. Not sure why I am not running 2.6.2-3mdk and I dont know how to change it, or if I should. It seems I find the mouse.o and agpgart files in the 2.6.2-3mdk directory and not the 2.4.25-0.pre7.3mdk directory. Not sure if this has anything to do with this. It never asked me about this during the install. We used these exact same CD's (and image) to install on other machine and it worked fine. A dell, but it did not have the i810 card. I am feeling really dumb now! Thanks so much for your help! Edited April 5, 2004 by Wolf_Racer
Ixthusdan
The original release of 10 barely ran for me until I changed to the 2.6.3-7mdk kernel. I had networking problems. Use urpmi to install the kernel and the sources, that is the same kernel with matching sources. It is possible that a mismatch there could cause compiling problems, like when the drivers were compiled. But again, it seems like the i810 driver is a stock driver for Mandrake. The vga driver should always work, but at lower resolutions and colors. Try running the x configuration program, and choose all of the lowere settings-vga, 640X480, 16 bit color. I use nvidia and always compile the driver after installation, but even the stock nv driver will run.
Wolf_Racer
What is the name of the x configuration program? Are you looking at this and thinking I have major problems and it is not worth debugging it as it might be major problems? Rather you are suggesting I should try to install the new kernel of 2.6.3-7mdk ? Strange that this image I installed worked perfect on another machine (simular, but different video card). That leads me to believe that there is something simple i am missing and while the new kernel might be better it might be unneccessary to get me up and running. I am concerned i have no /dev/mouse either. Ug! Thanks in advance. Edited April 5, 2004 by Wolf_Racer
Ixthusdan
Interesting. both psaux (mouse) and agpgart are located in /dev/misc. If they are both missing, then something has happened to that folder in /dev! Check it out.
Wolf_Racer
That is what i am thinking too. But I have not touched the /dev folder or ANY folder after the install. I simpley run through the install programs, login, and type startx and have these problems. During the install I did configure each item (graphcis card, monitor, mouse, etc) and it automaticlly found each one. Do you suggest I download and build some new install CD's with 2.6.3-7mdk kernel and try the install again? Where would I get some reliable install CD's I can download from the internet? A link would be greatly appericated. Thanks!
Ixthusdan
When I get home, I'll try to attach the files I have. Let's see if a repair will work. Clearly the system is looking for the missing folder. Another idea is to uninstall x and reinstall it. I'm thinking x creates this stuff. estatik
Wolf_Racer, I too had problems getting a graphical login when I installed 10.0 RC1 with the i810 chipset. "Startx" gave me the same exact error: GartInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (no such file or directory) I810(0) AGP GART support not available. As root, type "modprobe intel-agp" (without the quotes) and then add "intel-agp" (without the quotes) to your /etc/modprobe.preload file and reboot. It should work now ;) Edited April 12, 2004 by estatik
