noobie here, how can i switch boot mode?

The gui way is to have either kdm or gdm installed as well as kde. Then the login manager will have a place to choose which dm you want to go into. If you are using command line, then you could install a program called "xtart" that will give you a menu to choose from when it is executed.

Gui way:

Log out of GNOME, choose KDE.

 

Console:

Log out of GNOME, then type without quotes "startx"

 

Or to boot directly into KDE:

Go into Mandrake Control Center > Boot > DrakBoot helps you set up how your system boots > KDE (For default Desktop)

Not sure exactly from Gnome, you can try going into your menu, selecting configuration, then configure my computer, or you can open a terminal and type:

 

mcc

 

It'll ask you for your root password so enter that.
