A few quick questions...

System Specs:

AMD Athlon XP 1800+

256 MB Kingston PC 2100 RAM

ASUS NVIDIA nForce MoBo

I just installed Mandrake 9.2 last night and I must say I am very impressed so far. I am a total linux noob and I do have a few quick questions I hope you can help me with. My first obstacle was that linux would not boot... It kept freezing at: Starting up APM daemon

I did interactive startup which gave me the choice to skip loading the APM daemon, but I saw on a post somewhere here that you can later fix this problem from the console... Any idea on how I can do this?

My next obstacle was getting the Nforce drivers to work with 9.2 luckily there is a great post in this very forum that got me setup in no time flat.

I notice there is a great deal of "lag" between the mandrake 9.2 setup and my windows XP PC... is this because of the APM damon failing to load... or is there some sort of optimization I need to do...? (ie: load specific drivers)

Could someone please direct me to a site/download that displays and defines all of the console commands? I used DOS back in the day, I also have experience with c++ code. I am trying to fumble my way through this, but the Mandrake user manual seems geared towards the GUI interfaces...

Is there a way to switch from GNOME to KDE once you configure a user to use GNOME?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am very noobified. Like I mentioned before I am very happy with the results I have achieved so far(Getting 9.2 to run on a dreaded Nforce board with lan and sound support). This board has been a great help to me and I hope to be seeing a lot more of everyone here.

I can however offer up some great linux humor for those of you who have never seen this before, check this out... I laugh everytime I watch it:

I don't know how to fix APM, but if you want to stop from being loaded:

Mandrale Control Centre -> System -> DrakXServices

Then find the entry for "apmd" and un-select the load at boot option.

I think that installing the nVidia drivers will help your system, if you've been browsing the forum you'll know I'm not a huge nVidia fan ;). Apart from that, I would try switching off some of the eye kandy in KDE/Gnome. Also have a look at the DrakXServices and see if anything is being loaded at boot which you don't need. The less you have running the faster it should run (in theory).

You can select the windows manager at the log-in screen. Once you select a user you can pick from all the installed window managers from a drop down menu. I think Mandrake will by default load whatever you used the last time you logged in.

I'm afraid I don't know any good sites for console commands, I tend to stick with own notes I've accumlated over the years.

Edit: Really should learn to type.

I have a short rundown on console commands on my site too, the most important ones.

You can also open konqueror (in kde click the 'home' icon), and in the address bar substitute the 'file:/home/[user]/' with 'man:/'

(without the ' -quotes)

The cool thing: you can click the 'related' commands listed at the end of each man page, which will zap you forward to that page, and naturally you can use the back button too.

Happy browsing.

Oh, if installed, there's the official man page browser for xwindows, give this command in a terminal:

xman &

To go from gnome to kde, just logout, then look around for the extra things on the login screen; you can type your name and password, but there should be some extra options, like shutdown and selection of window manager/desktop environment. There you can choose kde. Also, you can go into mcc, boot, and configure your bootprocess to autologin your regular user with the wm/de of your choice.

Enjoy Linux, and welcome here!

edit:

I think you can turn off apmd by doing:

chkconfig apmd off

not quite sure about the syntax there, or whether it is really called apmd...

You can also go into the mandrake control center, system, services, and there set apmd off at boot..
