DragonMage
I am using pclinuxos in my laptop and there is this nifty program called klineakconfig. What it does is map those extraneous keys on the keyboard to run a program or perform a special action. One of the keyboards supported is dell Inspiron 8xxx. Since I don't have an inspiron, I don't know how it works in reality. However, check it out.. it may be the solution to your problem. http://lineak.sourceforge.net/ Mandrake rpm here http://www.rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/mandrake...-1mdk.i586.html
iphitus
another program is xbindkeys. http://hocwp.free.fr/xbindkeys/xbindkeys.html Set it to aumix -v +10 to increase main volume by 10% iphitus
Peep
you can also try acme (available via urpmi/rpmdrake). it was suggested here a while back and it worked like a charm on several laptops i've used it with.

Guest frelo
Hi, you probably figured this out but in case someone else has the same question: use i8kbuttons, in the package i8kutils. Install it together with the aumix package and add the following to /etc/rc.local: /usr/bin/i8kbuttons -u "aumix -v +5" -d "aumix -v -5" -m "aumix -v 0" -r 100 &
