ppp0 down

Another question. When I go into MCC - Hardware - Ethernetcar - RTL-8139, I then have the option to "Configure module". When I push "Configure module", I get the option to fill in the following choices, all of which are blank. I was wondering if this could be the problem.

multicast_filter_limit:

max_interrupt_work:

media:

full_duplex:

debug:

Perhaps this is it!!!!

Low power consumption with sleep modes for Green PCs

We really need to work out where the problem is....

Do you have another PC you can network between with a crossover cable...

(even a Windows macine or whatever)

At the moment I don't know if your modem is disconnecting, the card is powering down in sleep mode or its the drivers.

If you can network it to another PC sucessfully then it must be the pppoe part OR the modem.

If you can't then it must be the NIC either powering down OR the driver.

OK, you need to find the documentation for the RTL8139 driver....

I expect entering a Y or a 1 in debug should give a more verbose output of WHY its going down.....

I suscpect many things....

1) Its powering down becuase the driver doesn't handle the wake up...

2) The PPPOE is initiating the request.....

3) Maybe something in powr management or you might need to manually tell it which IRQ

I don't wanna start randomly telling you to modify things becuase you will just end up in a bigger mess

You have a couple of different options.....

Get a different card (15 Euro) but then it will be wasted if it turns out not to be the card!

Try a different Linux, if it works then copy the settings ....

If you go with this I'd try Knoppix... the hardware detection is excellent AND the PPPOE setup is REALLY simple.

If your going to do this tell me first .....

It will cost you the price of a CD.....

If it works then you can just copy the config files across to Mandrake

I'll probably try Knoppix, but I have to wait until I can buy it at the newstand (which is where I would find it in Italy). It might take a couple of weeks or more before it comes out, though. I'll let you know how things go when I try something new. Thanks for the help. I've learned a lot, but I realize that there is a lot I do not understand. Thanks again for taking all this valuable time to help me.

  • 1 month later...

I was finally able to get a Knoppix cd. In fact I am now connected to the internet with it, using also my ethernet modem. I have looked to try and find out what the connection configurations are, but I cannot find them. It just lets me re-configure the connection, without telling me what it is. Any idea the file I must look at to see it? Or any idea as to what I can do to get my ethernet working under Mandrake 9.2?

Thanks,

Kieth
