mstdmstd
Hi, All I have videocard nVidia GeForce 9600 GT and ViewSonic VA902 Problem is that running XFdrake there is no ViewSonic VA902 in selection. The nearest item is ViewSonic VA800. I select it and it seems for me that not all is ok, my screen is rather hard for my eyes,my eyes quickly becomes tired. It seems to me that all is ok with my videocard: $ rpm -qa | grep nvidia nvidia-current-kernel-2.6.33.7-server-2mnb-195.36.24-3mdv2010.1 nvidia-current-kernel-2.6.33.7-desktop-2mnb-195.36.24-3mdv2010.1 libkwinnvidiahack4-4.4.5-0.2mdv2010.2 x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-195.36.24-3mdv2010.1 nvidia-current-doc-html-195.36.24-3mdv2010.1 dkms-nvidia-current-195.36.24-3mdv2010.1 $ rpm -qa | grep kernel kernel-desktop-devel-latest-2.6.33.7-2mnb2 kernel-desktop-2.6.33.7-2mnb-1-1mnb2 nvidia-current-kernel-2.6.33.7-server-2mnb-195.36.24-3mdv2010.1 kernel-firmware-20100217-1mnb2 nvidia-current-kernel-2.6.33.7-desktop-2mnb-195.36.24-3mdv2010.1 kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.33.7-2mnb-1-1mnb2 kernel-desktop-latest-2.6.33.7-2mnb2 kernel-server-latest-2.6.33.7-2mnb2 kernel-server-2.6.33.7-2mnb-1-1mnb2 $ lspci | grep VGA 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G94 [GeForce 9600 GT] (rev a1) $ dmesg | grep nvidia nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel. nvidia 0000:02:00.0: PCI INT A -> Link[LNED] -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 19 nvidia 0000:02:00.0: setting latency timer to 64 $ /usr/bin/glxinfo | grep -E "direct|vendor" direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation GL_EXT_Cg_shader, GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test, GL_EXT_direct_state_access, Several printscreens: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: # nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings # nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (mandrake@n1.mandriva.com) Tue May 4 23:34:01 UTC 2010 # File generated by XFdrake (rev ) # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the xorg.conf man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" Option "Xinerama" "0" EndSection Section "Module" Load "v4l" # Video for Linux EndSection Section "ServerFlags" # allows the server to start up even if the mouse does not work #DontZoom # disable <Ctrl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> (resolution switching) Option "DontZap" "False" # disable <Ctrl><Alt><BS> (server abort) Option "allowmouseopenfail" EndSection Section "InputDevice" # generated from data in "/etc/sysconfig/keyboard" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" EndSection Section "InputDevice" # generated from default Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "Monitor" # TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output. # 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "ViewSonic" ModelName "ViewSonic VA800" HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0 VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0 ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630 ModeLine "768x576" 63.07 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616 EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Unknown" ModelName "ViewSonic VA902" HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0 VertRefresh 50.0 - 85.0 EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "device1" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "nVidia Corporation" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 6100 to GeForce 360" Option "DPMS" Option "TwinViewOrientation" "Clone" Option "TwinView" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "GeForce 9600 GT" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Device "device1" Monitor "monitor1" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "640x480" "480x360" "320x240" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "640x480" "480x360" "320x240" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "640x480" "480x360" "320x240" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "640x480" "480x360" "320x240" EndSubSection EndSection Section "Screen" # Removed Option "metamodes" "1280x1024_75 +0+0; 1280x1024 +0+0; 1152x864 +0+0; 1024x768 +0+0; 832x624 +0+0; 800x600 +0+0; 640x480 +0+0; 320x240 +0+0" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Device0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 Option "TwinView" "0" Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "CRT-0" Option "metamodes" "1280x1024_60 +0+0; 1280x1024_75 +0+0; 1152x864 +0+0; 1024x768 +0+0; 832x624 +0+0; 800x600 +0+0; 640x480 +0+0; 320x240 +0+0" SubSection "Display" Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection Can this problem be as wrong ViewSonic selection in XFdrake or can be some other reason? daniewicz
You just need one monitor section. What you need are ModeLines that match your monitor. I thought you could pull modeline numbers from the link I gave you. Alternately: Creating monitor modelines for xorg.conf The GTF XFree86 modeline generator is a utility for calculating VESA GTF modes. Given the desired horizontal and vertical resolutions and refresh rate (in Hz), the parameters for a matching VESA GTF mode are printed out. $ gtf 1280 1024 85 # 1280x1024 @ 85.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 91.38 kHz; pclk: 159.36 MHz Modeline "1280x1024_85.00" 159.36 1280 1376 1512 1744 1024 1025 1028 1075 -HSync +Vsync
ianw1974
An easier way maybe is to generate a new one for your machine. If X is not already running, simply: X -configure will generate /root/xorg.conf.new and you can then copy this to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. You can also let Xorg detect everything automatically by completely deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf and see if it's any better.

Actually I want to move from Fedora 14 to Mandriva 2010. In both cases I use kde and installe nvidia driver. I was using Fedora 12 and 14 for more 1 year. Installing Mandriva 2010 I found that my screen is rather hard for my eyes, my eyes quickly becomes tired I thought, maybe my eyes have some time to become habitual to Mandriva ? I am sitting on Mandriva about 1 and half monthes and still my screen is rather hard for my eyes... I returned to Fedora 14 with KDE and I feel that it is much easier for my eyes... In Fedora after installing nvidia and setting in nvidia-settings application screen Resolution(1280*1024,75Hz) I do not tune xorg.conf manually in any way... How can it be ? That it is rather frustrating for me... I run command X -configure in single user in Fedora 14 and I get next xorg.conf file (without error as in Mandriva as I wrote before): # nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings # nvidia-settings: version 280.11 (mockbuild@hephaestus.wilsonet.com) Sun Jul 31 18:17:52 EDT 2011 # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 280.11 (mockbuild@) Sun Jul 31 17:57:41 EDT 2011 Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Layout" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" Option "Xinerama" "0" EndSection Section "InputDevice" # generated from data in "/etc/sysconfig/keyboard" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "keyboard" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" EndSection Section "InputDevice" # generated from default Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Unknown" ModelName "ViewSonic VA902" HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0 VertRefresh 50.0 - 85.0 Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "GeForce 9600 GT" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" SubSection "Display" Modes "nvidia-auto-select" EndSubSection EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Device0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 Option "TwinView" "0" Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "CRT-0" Option "metamodes" "1280x1024_75 +0+0; nvidia-auto-select +0+0" SubSection "Display" Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection What is the difference between Fedora 14 and Mandriva ? I think I can try to copy this file as /etc/x11/xorg.conf in Mandriva file or even to copy to Mandriva xorg.conf from My Feodra system, but is it safe? As I read wrong configuration in xorg.conf can fisically damage of monitor ?
