saurya_s Posted December 21, 2003 Report Share Posted December 21, 2003 Hi Guys I have got a HAMR56 winmodem, for which I installed Linux driver.I use kppp to connect to the dialup service.Now, the modem, is recognized in kppp 'Query Modem' option.It also, connects as I get a message saying that I am connected, my phone gets also busy and I can hear the usual sound of 'Internet connected' however, when I try to go to the webpage or email server, I get an error message- failed to connect to the email server and error on websites. saurya_s Posted December 21, 2003 Author Report Share Posted December 21, 2003 Hi Roland Yes there are IP addresses which I assume to be correct.Our ISP didn't give us IPs, We only got the number to dial, my username and passwd.This works on win/macs, so I have used the same settings for Linux as well. If you do a ping google.com how does it replies ? ping google.com if you ping 216.239.57.99 (google.com IP address) how does does it replies ? ping 216.239.57.99 Ok you use kppp, good. anyway do you try to configure it using DrakConnect to see how it goes ? You should enter the DNS addresses manually. It must be possible to find them in the web site of your ISP. When 'connected' what does route and ifconfig -a from a terminal say? Also, if you have a firewall, stop it. have you tried as root? Your guess was right, firewall was the culprit, when I stopped shorewall , I could access web!!! Excellent. Hi there guys!! The eth and modem don't work simultaneously. I have to switch off the eth to make modem work. But the shorewall was the key!! Thanks a lot guys for tremendous help.!! So everything is perfect on my linux then!! Gowator Posted December 22, 2003 Report Share Posted December 22, 2003 hmmm sorry roland pm'd me to ask me to have a look but it seems you solved it :D Theoretically you can have simulataneous routing for dialup/lan at the same time, the question is if you need to. the simplest way is just changing the default gateway, either by a script or just command line route del default should delete the default gw... route add default gw ppp0 should set it to ppp (check syntax under man route or route --help) or alternatively through the lan route add default gw eth0 you can also add a static route for the internal lan (say 192.168.10.(0-255)) by route add 192.168.10.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 eth0 (again checj=k exact synax) then internal traffic will got hrough the LAN and everything else will go through the modem... \Sorry if that late.... Essentially, I use LAN at work, so when I bring my laptop to work and boot it, it recognizes eth. at home when I boot it it shows eth- down but I am able to connect to modem. So it should be OK.
