  1. Thanks for *your* patience!!! and yes, you are quickly getting better! Kristi
  2. Also might try changing the Option "Protocol" -to- "ExplorerPS/2" I'm obviously just guessing here but what the heck. Kristi
  3. Thanks - I don't see anything but hopefully some guru here will! When you start up Linux, I believe you have a button on your mouse, or your receiver that you can push to establish/re-establish connection. Try playing with that... Kristi
  4. Thanks!!! Found the original - I think they're all changed Sorry about that :woops: Kristi
  5. EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT the name "initprobe" is in error - I am still looking for where I initially made that quote, but you must correct that to 'inittab" Please edit any of your posts that have that in and change it to inittab so we don't confuse future readers. Sorry about that!!! Kristi
  6. Glad you got it working, but check these modules - I may have made a typo before. /etc/inittab gets changed from if:3:initdefault to if:5:initdefault inittab has a lot of stuff in it. Here's mine: # # inittab This file describes how the INIT process should set up # the system in a certain run-level. # # Author: Miquel van Smoorenburg, <miquels@drinkel.nl.mugnet.org> # Modified for RHS Linux by Marc Ewing and Donnie Barnes # # Default runlevel. The runlevels used by Mandrakelinux are: # 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this) # 1 - Single user mode # 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking) # 3 - Full multiuser mode # 4 - unused # 5 - X11 # 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this) # id:5:initdefault: # System initialization. si::sysinit:/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit l0:0:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 0 l1:1:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 1 l2:2:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 2 l3:3:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 3 l4:4:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 4 l5:5:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 5 l6:6:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 6 # Trap CTRL-ALT-DELETE ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now # When our UPS tells us power has failed, assume we have a few minutes # of power left. Schedule a shutdown for 2 minutes from now. # This does, of course, assume you have powerd installed and your # UPS connected and working correctly. pf::powerfail:/sbin/shutdown -f -h +2 "Power Failure; System Shutting Down" # If power was restored before the shutdown kicked in, cancel it. pr:12345:powerokwait:/sbin/shutdown -c "Power Restored; Shutdown Cancelled" # Run gettys in standard runlevels 1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1 2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2 3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3 4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4 5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5 6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6 Also ini/etc/modprobe.preload, ADD a line that has nothing but the word nvidia Whenever you use vi and come up with a blank screen, it's a sure bet you made a typo on the module name! Exit by ESC then type :q and enter to exet without saving. give me a copy of the mouse section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and I wil see if I see anything unusual, not that I'm a mice expert!!! Kristi Yeah, If I went to Vegas, I would loose everything! Not for me!!!!! PS Nvidia (video drivers)(glad I don't have ATI) s a continual thing... a couple of days ago I tried and tried to get Nvidia to mesh with 2.6.11.8 but no go. It's one of those upgrade thingies - I have to change to GCC (C++) v4 before I can do it and I just didn't have the patience! - I'll let someone else blaze that trail (namely Mandrivasoft (or Mandriva corp) Fun, though!!!!!!!!!!! Iam actually back up on 2006 cooker current... we'll see how many minutes it lasts!!!!!!! I enjoy trying to get bleeding edge to work. Prob is BIG changes in CUPS, GCC, and a bunch of other things. We will be patient and I will encourage patience among others!!! 2005 is pretty solid, though! Kristi
  7. He reported a few posts ago: yes login as root.. says' no such command' This means the NVIDIA* file is almost certainly not flagged as executable. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I figured he had a typo in his "command" - still do. EDIT - scarecrow was right. I was wrong! Sorry Kristi
  8. hmmmmm now what was he going to say........ glad you got it! :D Kristi
  9. huh? EDIT - I should have said - "you're right!" Kristi
  10. To whomever is having problems, please post your /var/log/nvidia-installer.log file Mine looks like this: Read the last paragraph. It says the Nvidia driver installation is complete. If yours doesn't say that we need to look at why. Also look at /etc/modprobe.preload file. mine looks like this: It may have other lines but IT MUST HAVE THESE TWO BOTTOM LINES. Let me know where you're at! :D Kristi
  11. I auto logon to user so I don't see anything while logging on till it gets to my desktop. Loging out I hit menu, click logout and get a little box with the cute mandrake the dragon, and the choices 1. End current session 2. Turn off computer. 3. Restart computer. 4.cancel in a root logon, take a look at Meun,System,Configure,Configure your desktop,System,Login manager and see if things are to your liking there. In 2006 Mandriva is removing most kdm or whatever it is so without mods, you will get less selection, but probably a safer system. yeah, it's probably all Nvidia's fault!!! see - linux!!! choices!!! - nah - same thing . If you pay I think you get some extras. dunno. just cause you're paranoid does mean they really aren't to get you!!! heeheeheehee excellent stuff cheers polemicz and kristi regards reb yep - beers or rootbeers or hot chocolate all around!!! :D Kristi
  12. I know the book well, but since I make typos all the time, nitshell seemed kinda normal... As far as books go, try google, first - cheaper and often quicker. Unless you can't remember "tail" so you dopn't know what to look up!!!
  13. specifically, mine looks like (the cx880 is my tv card - you won't have that line unless you have a tv card with a cx88x chip)
  14. Start with Xandros or Mandriva. Then after a few months migrate to Mandriva.
  15. Sorry - menu, logout. That will dump you to a command prompt. looks good to me. you could also do a "uname -r" without the quotes just to be sure your system doesn't think it's something else.
  16. duh - oops - I totally forgot!!! :woops:
  17. beats the hell out of me - I just checked and I'm running ff1.02 - that's what came with Mandriva2005LE. You could try the firefox forum at mozillizine. Kristi
  18. now ready I hope. after install 2005LE, you will be presented with a login. login with root hit enter enter password, hit enter. type kde and hit enter. This will bring you to a root kde session. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a console (menu, system, terminals konsole check your source and kernel: rpm -qa | grep kernel ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If they are both the same, as above (kernel-2.6.11.6mdk) you are clean - go to step 3. Dirty system: using MCC (menu, system, configure your computer click remove software, search on the word source, and delete the stripped kern. Go to /usr/src and delete folders linux and linux-2.6.1.blah... to actually get rid of it. Quit the MCC software remover. Click add software, search on the word source. add the kernel source : kernel-source-2.6-2.6.11-6mdk it will ask for and read it off your CD or DVD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STEP 3. check: in a console run rpm -qa | grep kernel if they are the same, copy the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run to the root folder. Log out of root. X will not close so it looks wierd. type ls (that's ell ess or LS in small letters) and hit enter. you should see your NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run there along with a bit of other junk. type: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run and hit enter on the first question do left arrow and hit enter to accept. Just whack enter on the next 2 questions, but note what they were for later post mortem. It should then slowly build a module. It should then slowly build another module. It should then tell you Nvidia is installed. cd /etc vi modprobe.preload and make sure it has a line for nvidia-agp AND a line for nvidia. esc :wq to save esc :q to just quit without saving. ERROR ERROR ERROR edited by Kristi May 19 05 (THIS IS WRONG) vi initprobe and change the line from 3 to 5 so: id:5:initdefault: SHOULD BE: vi inittab and change the line from 3 to 5 so: id:5:initdefault: esc :wq to save cd X11 this puts you in /etc/X11 vi xorg.conf assure your mouse is correct ("4 5" not "6 7") change nv to nvidia esc :wq to save type reboot and hit enter. Hopefully that will do it for you. Kristi (uname -r will tell you what kern you are actually running in your system - the source you download MUST BE the same for Nvidia to compile. )
  19. Hey Adam - what happened to the neat Avatar... :o
  20. Try Adam's suggestion first - that's the one! Kristi
  21. Yes - that one cost me a pseudoulcer. Also check your xorg.conf I once typed "Options" instead of "Option" and I couldn't boot to X. Kristi (I regularly put the line Option "NoLogo" into xorg while I'm changing nv to nvidia. (put it on the next line.)
  22. use "standard" security. At one point I had found a beautiful guide for Debian. Can't find it now - besides this is not debian , it's rpm. for KDE you might look at http://developer.kde.org/documentation/ also http://www.kde.org/ Googling will help you a lot. Also, definitely look through the Mandrivausers.org forum How-to's and tips and tricks - wealth of info in there. Much of the info is badly out of date. This kern is 2.6.11 Some thoughts: http://tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/index.html http://tldp.org/LDP/lkmpg/2.6/html/index.html (memorize that - we'll test you tomorrow http://tldp.org/guides.html (where I got the above 2 from) (most folks here probably don't know most of this stuff - especially me!!! but it's nice to take a quick look and get a sense that if you havbe a question, many times qooqlg can help you find the answer)(I usually ask a question here ahd then start googling) - Actually, I usually use SEARCH here, then ask a question here, then google. SEARCH is a fantastic time saver!!!!!!! (top of page) Hope that doesn't confuse too much! Kristi
  23. Just a thought - a clean install of 2005LE. Kristi
