  1. Rolf asked a question and I found that none of the KDE base stull had been installed.

    I installed it.

    I can now choose KDE at the logon menu.

    Thanks Rolf!!!!!!!!!

    ==> solved - 0.1.3 install fails to install KDE base modules. Under what conditions is unknown. Fixed by booting to Gnome and using MCC install to install them.

    EDIT: see my post 6 posts down from this post in this thread - lisa has to be allowed in install.

  2. I have installed it about 8 times, downloaded it twice, burned it to CDs twice.

    1) I get NO KDE. never. Ever. regardless of whether I choose KDE OR KDE & Gnome OR all GUIs, or check the individual program selections.

    2) at boot, at command prompt, I get

    cat: /var/run/console.lock No such file or directory
    This repeats every few seconds. It makes it VERY difficult to edit inittab and xorg.conf .

    3) In the install, I am unable to configure the mouse - I click on configure but nothing happens. (PS2 Logitech Mouseman) xorg.conf has it as a PS2/MS Explorer which is normal. Mouse works fine in Gnome.

    Any ideas on these 3?

  3. Profuse thanks to all. What I did was, with the setting in kwrite set to DOS/Windows, I opened a new (blank) kwrite, copied the text from the old kwrite window, and saved it. That apparently saved it "correctly" as I was able to read it with Gates-o-matic.

    Only reason I needed Winblows was that my Labtec webcam has a nice motion detector that runs under XP, and I wanted to use it briefly. I do not know of one for Linux.

    Thanks again!

    Kristi

  4. Try cups to set it up. Open a browser and in the adressbar type: localhost:631 Follow it from there.

    PS you can print drafts from your regular printer if you adjust the printersettings.

    THANKS!!! Devries! :D

    Going to localhost:631 and adding one, and all the deskjets were there. Don't know why they aren't in the regular way, but what the heck!!! :D

    Yes! i had already changed the "regular" printer to draft, so this one I added will be left for the occasional "good" use.

    Thanks!!!

    Kristi

  5. Just reinstalled 2005LE to get a printer working. During install, it offered me HP deskjet 5740. That printer works fine after install. But trying to install another one (one draft, one regular), most of the deskjets that were avail during install are not avail - it looks like 10.1 or prior choices.

    Where did they go, and how can I get them back?

    tia!!!

    [moved from Software by spinynorman] Thanks! :D

  6. Hey, John, in menu, switch user, I still only get the one user - even when I added a second temp user. What did I do wrong?

    Kristi (/me is really getting to like that mod of yours!!!!!)

    EDIT, I checked in admin mode in Login Manager, users tab, but no joy.

    EDIT2 is there a special Login Mgr for KDM? Where is it? tia!!!

  7. A. I am so stone age! - course I was using auto logon and I didn't have the mod from AussieJohn to display all of my users including root as options at logon time. I had been rebooting, just to reload a user. :woops:

    B. I had assumed early on, for this install, that I had set up my root konqueror to view hidden files - something I always do. :woops:

    C. Ian, wastebin didn't work. But note the contents of trash.desktop below.....

    D. coverup, your suggestion to create a new user held the key. When I logged in to this user, there was trash, so I fired up a root konqueror and looked in Desktop. I found:

    .directory

    Home.desktop

    System.desktop

    trash.desktop

    Welcome.desktop

    .directory contained (arctic, when I cleared Desktop (with a correctly set up konqueror) this was all I got)

    [Desktop Entry]
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Type=Directory
    BgImage=
    Icon=desktop

    Home.desktop contained

    [Desktop Entry]
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Name=Home
    Name[af]=Huis
    (I deleted the rest for this post)
    GenericName=Personal Files
    GenericName[af]=Persoonlike Lêers
    (I deleted the rest for this post)
    URL=$HOME
    Icon=home-mdk
    Type=Link

    System.desktop contained

    [Desktop Entry]
    Encoding=UTF-8

    GenericName=System Locations
    GenericName[bg]=СиÑтемни файлове
    (I deleted the rest for this post)
    URL=system:/
    Icon=system
    Type=Link

    trash.desktop contained (not seen one of these before)

    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Link
    URL=trash:/
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Icon=trashcan_full
    EmptyIcon=trashcan_empty
    Name=Trash
    Name[en_GB]=Wastebin
    Comment=I removed the non english lines and comments
    Comment=Contains removed files

    Welcome.desktop contains

    (by this time I was tired of this and didn't care!!!)

    So I just did a select all and copied it on top of what I had in Desktop for the kristi user.

    Voila!!!

    :banana::banana::banana:

    :thanks::thanks::thanks: to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. uh, nevermind, but..... :cheesy:

    I went to /home/kristi/Desktop with my root konqueror and deleted everything.

    I rebooted, but all I have on the desktop is kdetv and 2 kookas :help::cheesy:

    and if I look at /home/kristi/Desktop with root konqueror, it is empty.

    hmmmmmmmmmm.

  9. another option: delete all your user config files in your de as root, then log in again. everything will be reset to the default values (and your stored mails will be gone unless you backup those :P ).

    can you please explain this a little more, and I'll give it a shot. exactly which files? stored mails?

    tia

  10. to get to a root session in Mandriva club 2005KDE 3.4

    Press ctr-alt-F2, log in as root and type:

    startx -- :1

    hit enter.

    you will pop into a root session.

    This is something that Devries told me a while back that I thought I had tried on this release, and I thought didn't work. :woops:

    But I just checked it and it does.

    ctrl-alt-F7 will give you the user.

    ctrl-alt-F8 will give you the root session (assuming you only have one user logged in).

    When you log out of root, give it a minute, then it will give you a command line prompt.

    At that point, do ctrl-alt-F7 to get the user session.

  11. lost my trash icon that, when I click on it, asks me if I want to empty it. The trash icon I have doesn't ask me that. This happened as a result of a reinstall of Mandriva, and me deleting the wrong one.

    So I went looking for it and found some trash in

    /home/kristi/.local/share/Trash

    How do I create an icon on my user desktop that will ask me (when I click on it) if I want to empty the trash?

    tia

    Kristi

  12. Damn - how'd you get to be so smart!

    I clicked on the littlebox to the right of that and that lets you choose from stuff in the menu - it worked fine for opera, so i expected it to work like that for the mozilla firefox menu entry.

    :oops:

    :cheesy:

    :woops: :woops: :woops: :woops:

    Thanks for sticking with me!

    :D
