  1. Thanks for that. I shall have to remember for the next time. I ended up getting that frustrated that I just wiped the hard drive and started again. The drivers installed and worked fine so It was my fooling arround with other settings that did it. To the best of my knowledge anyway (Which is not much lol) I was not one hundred percent happy with the way I solved it though as I lost all my URPMI stupp and all the RPM I had downloaded. Oh well more insentive to learn. :)
  2. Well I might take this from another angle. Is there any way to reset Xorg and the graphics system. I tried using the DVD upgrade feature and changed things but this did not work either. Any ideas?
  3. Hi all I was up way too late trying to get 10.1 (Mandrake) configured last night with the Nvidia driver. I ended up playing around with the hardware settings and must have chosen a video mode that was not supported. The screen went to a couple of very blocky lines and when I restarted I recieve the message below. By all accounts I have the Nvidia drivers installed and all the relevant files have the correct entries (nvidia instead of nv ect) SO I am pretty sure I stuffed this myself. I sthere any way to fix and how do I do so and with what? I edited the folloing text as it was overly long but can post the full thing if needed. 4. I have tried the driver from the Motorola site. It has installed with no errors but things still don't work. When I try using the dev/modem it says it can't open the device, when I try using ttsy2 (Comm 3) it says the modem is busy. Getting another hardware modem is out of the question as that will cost nearly one hundred dollars here. I plan on getting asdl late in the year so do not want to spend that then another hundred plus later on an adsl modem. here is the scan modem text: DO use the following line as the email Subject Line, to alert cogent experts: scanModem, Mandrakelinux release Kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdksmp kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdksmp Occassionally reponses are blocked by an Internet Providers mail filters. 5. Well that makes three of us. I have one as well
  6. Thanks very much. I was able to work things out after you mentioned the hard drive labeling. I can now get the boot loader working fine. Now all I have to to is figure out how things work and how to use them
  7. Thanks, I have the operating systems on the SATA drive. Therefore hdd is incorect and it should be sd0. I will give that a try and also take a look at the BIOS
  8. Ok tried what you said, it said it installed to \mbr I then restarted at the prompt.....and went back to windows :( I still blame the operator, good tools work well in capable hands lol
  9. Thanks for the quick reply, I think it may have asked to be put on \hdd but not sure. I will try what you said and see what happens.
  10. Hi all, I have decided to give Linux a try. I had a guy download Mandrake 10.1 DVD for me (The free one) I gave it a try at work and after a little confusion the work PC now has Linux and XP pro working as a duel boot setup perfectly apart from not working on the win modem. So then I say to myself, "Self. This would be ok to install at home" Which I did. The install went easily, no errors. I thought this is cool; I may have to buy a penguin sticker for the computer. Once the setup was complete I was asked to restart, after doing so the comp booted straight to Windows There was no hint of the bootloader. Both work and home computer have the same XP SP2 install (Cough) and I am using the same Linux DVD as well. I have tried for the last five hours to Google the problem but found nothing that matches. I am completly new to Linux, so new in fact that the first time I I saw it was yesterday when I installed at work. I know that when I have neede help with windows people wanted to know what hardware I had, so with that in mind I have included the list below. Forgive me if I put in too much, I just want to get this fixed so I can take a look at it while I am off work. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
