  1. I have a Dell Latitude CP laptop, obviously. The cd-rom drive is unable to properly read burned cds, The laptop boots off of the the cds but after I am asked the boot method (only cdrom is an option) it "hangs" in trying to acces cdrom. The CDROM continually spins up then back down again and no progress is made. Also I know these cds are valid because i used them to install mandrake on 3 different computers and i have reinstalled it one of them just to make sure the cds are still ok. Since i can't do a cd install, I was wondering if there is a way for me to boot off of some floppies to activate the Xircom Ethernet/Modem PCMCIA card and preform a internet install. Any help, pointers, or stupid looks would be appreciated.
  2. Hello. I've been googling around. I have been finding plenty of resources but they cover linux distros that seem to have died out. Now I am here asking for help. PC specs: Processor: 66Mhz 486 Memory: 35MB, yes 35MB. two 16MB sticks, but bios reports 35MB and diagnotics say it is all valid. HDA: 1284MB HDB: 1224MB HDC: 4x CD-ROM Video: Internal Cirrus Logic GD-54xx VGA. has 1MB RAM. ISA expansion card: 1 free, 2 used. Sound: Aztech Sound Galaxy Washington 16. on ISA expansion card. with joystick port. PC diagnotics detect it as a sound blaster and produces sound through it too. not needed though. audioable beeps through system speaker is enough. NIC: 10Mbit, Unknown manufacturer. on ISA expansion card. Modem: 56.6Kb built-in to MB, not used or needed. ps/2: 2 connectors for mouse and keyboard. serial: 1 port. not used or needed. printer: 1 port. not used or needed. Desired use: IRC, web and FTP servers. I need to be able to remotely admin the machine through telnet or ssh because a monitor will not be connected most of the time. I am quite willing to spend as much time as it takes to get the system running. I am doing this partly to learn how linux works as an OS, partly to put this junker to work, and mainly to have fun. ;) GUI is not needed, dunno if GUI would run on it anyways. Anyone know of a linux distro still in existance that will run reasonably well on this machine? [edit] corrected video card name. [edit2] corrected sound card.
  3. [root@UNKNOWN_4]# urpmi --rebuilddb urpmi: unknown option "--rebuilddb", check usage with --help
  4. Any RPM I try to install that requires libstdc++.so.6 fail to install. So I try to install RPM libstdc++6-3.4.1-4mdk.i586.rpm and recieve the message that it is already installed. So I try to install the RPM again and it still fails. help? I'm installing the RPM's by double clicking on them and enter my root pass.
  5. You didn't read my post very well or you didn't explain very well. the correct homepage is displayed in the konqueror settings but that is not what shows up when i open up konqueror.
  6. I have used konqueror to change the home page but it always opens up to "file:/usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html" how do i get it to stop that!? and goto what i want it to from the start? I'm running Mandrake 10.0 bty.
  7. Thanks VeeDubb for the www.transgaming.com site. I have four windows games that were keeping me from dropping windows completely. Now maybe I can lose it. ;) Thanks iphitus for http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft-en/table.shtml I haven't looked closely at it yet but it looks promising. I'm proof of that. [edit] Though you can't get on my computer and do anything without my finding out about it. Windows tracks everything you do. just a matter of knowing where to look. :o
  8. Great Thanks a million! I think it comes default. I installed the bare minimum. I'm installing packages as i need them. bb002 = Linux noob; Man, I tried guessing at what "MD5 Checksum" might be called as an app. i had tried summd5, never even occurred to me to switch it around...

    Crazy Japanese!!!

response to question 4 Your LEXMARK All-In-One would not happen to be a X75 by any chance? I have a X75. Lexmark does not seem to have linux drivers at all for anything. I'm waiting for 10.2 to become final before i mess with finding the drivers. On how to get the printer to work, i don't know. for the scanner part you could try SANE. Scanner Access Now Easy, is what it stands for. http://www.sane-project.org [edit] Since we both have All-in-Ones, figured I'd look into getting mine to work, too. Well my All-In-One isn't supported. Only the X70 and X73 are supported by SANE. No luck finding printer drivers, found plenty of places with people asking for it though...haven't looked really hard though. I'm going to bed. I'll check it out more at work tomorrow.
  10. Does MandrakeLinux come with a md5 checksum app? if so, what is it? If it is not installed by default what package do i need to install? If Mandrake does not have one at all. where can i find one? Thanks.
  11. I have found the source of my problems. It is the usb hub on that computer. Mandrake would not see anything i stuck into the usb ports and neither would windows. windows even stopped seeing my cruzer. It was an old computer in the back of the office at work that i had decided to dual boot with windows 98 like my home computer. Must finally be breaking down. I am at home now and just tested my cruzer in linux, works fine. I had just started using linux about two weeks ago, so i haven't tried out all my hardware in it yet. False alarm it would appear. Sorry about that.
  12. Geez...My computer IS old, I get on average 36FPS, and about 23 when in a game. To be honest, anything over 60FPS seems a waste, the human eye only sees at around 30FPS anyways.
  13. My SanDisk Cruzer Micro (512MB) isn't seen by MandrakeLinux 10.0. I am dual booting with windows 98SE and it sees the device fine, but Mandrake doesn't see it at all. I looked in HardDrake and the jumpdrive isn't even listed as an unknown. Now the really confusing part (for me) is that i can boot my pc up with mandrake Move 10.0 after it has booted i can stick my jumpdrive in and harddrake will list it as /dev/sda then i just have to mount it and i am good to go. Now why won't plain old mandrakelinux do that?
  14. I GOT IT!!!!! in the /etc/modprobe.conf the aliases lines i had: alias snd-card-0 opl3sa2 alias sound-slot-0 opl3sa2 instead of: alias snd-card-0 snd-opl3sa2 alias sound-slot-0 snd-opl3sa2 all it took was "snd-" to get it working. took me 3 hours to figure that one out . It sucks to be a noob. Then i found out that i had to boost the kmix volume controls (they were all at zero) Got my sound problem solved. Now for the all-in-one, I bumped into some documentation somewhere...Think I will wait for 10.2 to mess with that. Same goes for the rumblepad too. problem solved. Now i can goto bed. I was up until 4:30 (gmt -6) last night trying to get it to work and i had to get up 3 hours later. [edit] Thanks for the point in the right direction BVC! bty: Umm....is it just me or does the preview post button not work??
  15. Alright. Finally figured out how to do automatic module loading. Still nothing...I guess. After a restart, log off and back in I will get error message. about unable to open device /dev/spd sound will now use the null output device. Whether that means i am getting closer or not i don't know. Forgot to say this before: I am running MandrakeLinux 10.0 in KDE 3.2. It would appear i somehow downloaded the old version. I'm waiting for 10.2 to become final.
  16. After reading this page ("Documentation/sound/oss/OPL3-SA2") I still have no idea where to apply the settings or how to apply them. The card is Onboard if that makes any difference. And the bios automatically configures a device's irq, i/o, etc. The two methods i read about where for the kernel command line, where ever that is. Automatic module loading and i have no clue where to find out if that is on or not.
  17. My Sound card is a Yamaha OPL3SA2. My Printer is a Lexmark X75 All-in-One-Printer. My Joystick is a Logitech Rumble Pad 2. (Don't really need drivers for this though.) Lexmark and Logitech do not seem to be offering linux drivers. And being a linux noob, I have no idea where to turn too.
