  1. It could be your fonts are configured too big.  Have you tried changing the size of them?  Mine are normally size 8 or 10 but this is based on screen resolution of 1024x768.

    Do you mean in Kcontol center or MCC? Not sure I ever saw this in MCC. I do know that I only have the 75 DPI font package installed. SHould I get the 100 DPI package.

    Not sure how you mean to change the font size. Please clarify.

    Thanks,

    Robert

  2. I did a urpmi update to Cooker 2006 yesterday hoping the crazy color/icon label display issue would be fixed (has the same problem in RC2, but didnt fix it) since they are about to release 2006 to Club/everyone shortly,

    but that was not the case.

    I did solve the problem by changing the color depth from 24 to 16 bit, and everything was fixed (no need to change display driver even).  Hope this helps others.

    Now, if I could direct you to this post: laptops thread

    for a separate issue for you ideas...

    Thanks,

    Robert

    I agree that 16 bit depth works fine. But this is a work around and not a solution. I did like to use my hardware to its full potential. I just think that Mandriva should wait till xorg 6.9 is final or provide an option to install xorg 6.8 stable.

    Agreed! But, for the hardware on my PII laptop, I'm not sure I get 24bit color anyway. At least it's not noticible like 256 color mode would be. I'm just happy to be able to read the screen!

  3. Use the the above sugestion by clicking and moving in the middle of the screen / window  ................ the mouse doesn't have to be on a title bar.

    OK, learn something new everyday. I was able to alt-click and move the window up so I could select apply and ok.

    Isnt this a sign that something's not right with the x server? Why wouldnt all dialogs appear within the screen's size??

    Thanks.

    Robert

  4. Can't answer all of your problems, but to move the screen further up, down etc,

    hold down the "ALT" key on your keyboard and the left click on your mouse at the same time. You can then move the screen anywhere you like.

    yes, but the window is already too big, and I cant move the top of the window beyond the border of the desktop. I only get 2 icons in upper left corner - minimize to tray, and maximize window. when maximized, the the buttons are still below the bottom edge of the screen, even with the kicker moved out of the way........

  6. I am running the cooker version of 2006, and all is well, but this problem has had me for a while, even on LE2005.

    When I go to a config diaglog (help/configure X app) the window that opens is too big for my screen and I can't make it any smaller so I can make my config changes then choose "OK" or "Apply" or whatever is at the bottom of the window. The desktop fills the screen properly, though

    I am running a the screen/driver in 800x600 16 bit mode, using the NeoMagic MagicMedia built in graphics.

    Anyone know what part of Xorg.conf would cause this>

    Thanks,

    Robert

  7. SMP is OK for HT enabled CPU's as well. It will also show as 2 CPU's under Linux.

    Don't use a SMP kernel if you intend to use heavy emulators like VMware, they are still unresolved performance issues. In that case, use a plain kernel instead.

    Thanks. No intention to use emulators, so maybe i'll go with the smp, if it's possible to choose when installing.

  8. Well, using Knoppix and Ubuntu live I had a few issues:

    1) knoppix didnt seem to have the e100 lan driver

    2) Ubunt used the i915 video driver at my 1280x1024 resolution, but left about a 1/2 inch black vertical band on the right side of my monitor.

    I ran lspci -v and -vv and most info came back as unkown device:

    Not sure if its worth the hassle when 2006 comes out to install since it probably wont have properly set up xorg for my chipset or monitor (dell 19" flat panel).

    Any ideas???

    Thanks,

    Robert

  9. ok, when I get it from dell, well see what happens.

    And to think I skipped the ATI 128mb PCI Express upgrade thinking it would be even more trouble. Not sure it was the best decision, in retrospect. THe club LE2005 cd's have ATI kernels....

    oh well......

    What are my chances that the partitions will get dorked during install since the only exisitng one is NTFS?

    Robert

  10. I've had problems too (especially after a fresh install), so here's my 'recipe' for speeding things up - gathered together from this and other forums. I think the most effective is disabling ipV6, but I went about making changes all at once, so I have no real proof that the ipv6 change really was the most important.

    Recipe for Better Networking (Faster Browser loads)

    /etc/Modules.conf #to turn off ipv6 at OS level, was empty before

    alias net-pf-10 off

    For wireless configurations only

    /etc/sysconfig/network #only had NETWORKING=Yes before

    HOSTNAME=localhost

    NETWORKING=yes

    GATEWAY=192.168.1.1 # or the IP address of your gateway device - your default

    GATEWAYDEV=wlan0

    In Firefox - about:config

    ipv6: toggle to false

    I'm trying to attach a screen shot of the about:config changes I made, but not sure it will work. Basicall increased the network.http.max and .pipeline to true.

    good luck. I get reasonable response now downloading pages now.

  11. Steve,

    ls -l /dev/sr0 gives this

    scsi/host3/bus0/target0/lun0/cd

    I tried putting that for the device in Grip (version 3.3.0), but no dice -- just says no disk, but the status tab says grip started successfully.

    robert

  12. yes it is music cds I'm trying to mount so I can rip them with Grip, but always says 'no disc' when I put either the /mnt or /dev path to the drive, but as I said, K3b has no issues and Kscd auto-starts when I put one in the tray,

    Robert

  13. Using 10.2 beta 3 with mm kernel, I cant seem to mount this drive so that Grip can use it, even when opening grip as root, but K3B/Kscd has no problem seeing the drive and accessing the media in it, playing or burning cds.

    Here is my fstab for the device:

    /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom1 auto umask=0,user,suid,exec 0 0

    Here is the error I get when trying to mount it:

    /dev/sr0: input/output error

    mount: /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only

    /dev/sr0: input/output error

    mount: /dev/sr0: cant read superblock.

    so I added myself to cd, cdrom, cdwriter goups, still no luck. K3b still works, but konq cant display or mount the drive.

    Any idea what could be causing this? THis is usually my go-to drive which mounts and loads no problem.

    Thanks,

    Robert

  14. you dont say what version you're running, but if its a beta, I think the issue was that the init scripts has net and pcmcia starting with the same number, so pcmcia tried to start before net and that doesnt work. THis is only from memory and I may be missing some details.

    Check your init scripts rc3-5.d and maybe then you see the problem.

    Robert

  15. I have had good luck with Linuxant's Driverloader. Its not free (as in beer or any other), but for $20, its been a bargain so far since everytime I try a new version of MDK (now 10.2 beta 3) something is broken (new?!) from the previous version and Tech Support has been excellent, even to the point of helping to fix some bugs in the version.h file of the beta3 release. Totally out of scope for the product, but nice to know they will go that far. My card is a b card, but some f-'d up version that none of the open source packages will be useful for.

    You can get a trial license for 20 days. Maybe that's the route to go to use what you've already got, before you buy new hardwar.

    Good luck,

    Robert

  16. you should add a line:

    essid=any or youressid (no quotes)

    for the wireless.

    Maybe get rid of all the ip addresses since you're using dhcp it will get one from the router, no need to assign, or change bootproto to static. Just make sure your router is set to assign to those ip ranges.

    Here is my ifcfg for a Dlink (realtek) card which I connect to a Linksys wireless router, set to dpcp:

    DEVICE=eth0

    BOOTPROTO=dhcp

    ONBOOT=yes

    ESSID=myssid

    HWADDR=00:05:5d:98:1d:32

    MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes

    WIRELESS_ENC_KEY=""

    NEEDHOSTNAME=yes

    DHCLIENT_MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF='yes'

    DHCLIENT_SET_DEFAULT_ROUTE='yes'

    Good luck.

  17. I have 10.2 beta installed on my laptop, but had to add the pcmcia package after the install since it wasn't installed automatically.

    When the machine boots, I can see the log saying "starting PCMCIA".......OK

    but in actuality after booting it is not started. In MCC/services, pcmcia is listed as on-boot yes, but is not running- status is stopped.

    How do I get it to actually load? If I modprobe pcmcia, I can see 2 modules loaded, but I still cant get driverloader to load the card because it cant see any pcmcia devices.

    Thanks for any pointers...

    Robert

  18. Just got the Forge512 and cant use Rio software under MDK, so what is everyone using that will allow me to transfer stuff to the player with ID3 tags so I can create playlists, albums etc?

    I already have XMMS and grip for converting and playing on my laptop, just not sure if they are acceptable to transfer stuff over to the Forge.

    Thanks for any pointers...

    Robert

  19. Make sure its the correct kernel - in terminal, type: uname -r

    [robert@localhost robert]$ uname -r

    2.6.8.1-12mdk

    This is the latest kernel, so maybe you should urpmi kernel to see what's available since you seem to have an older one, and the go up to the 1-12 version.

    Also, maybe your urpmi sources are down. What does uprmi.update -a do? Anything hanging? If so try going to urpmi.org, look for the easyurpmi link and re-set your sources...

    Good luck,

    RObert
