    isa pnp

Saw this for the first time during startup: Setting up isa pnp devices What are isa pnp devices?
  2. There is only one site that I know off. So the problem is very limited, but anyway... http://hop.to/dvs and choose "Foto's". There try to click a hyperlink on that page. You can try it, but others have tested it also and with theirs it worked ....but try it and see.... I've read atutorila about buildsing mandrake for your system hee like with gentoo. With 9.1 I'll try that and also build X11. Shall see then, but let me now please... Thanks.
  3. I just wanted to add something....At this moment only one website to my knowledge causes the crash. There was also one accident with mozilla-mail, but that's not really a problem(using alphaversion of mozilla...?). The nice thing is that the opensourcedrivers don't cause ANY crash to my experience and they also use AGP, not? I really want to use nvidia's ones because of their 3d-accelsupport...Maybe in 9.1final athings are maybe better...we'll see
  4. I'm not yet completely sure, but I just visted a website where it crashed ...No, it doesn't crash anymore. Although I know the nvidia docs, say, may chipset, is not optimal, it should work I think. I get more and more the impression that it aren't (completely) the nvidia-drivers. It still can be, I'll kow more if I check agp.
  5. Ok, I really want to find out what crashes my nvidia. -I've not checked not using agp-support to see if it crashes then. Say it is AGP that crashes linux, won't it be more random? The crashes occur mostley on specific websites. If I visit them, linux crashes... I checked a website I know of and when it crashes it gives als something like this in users.log(everytime): Mar 17 13:31:09 localhost xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont (unreadable) Mar 17 13:31:09 localhost xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/Type1 (unreadable) Mar 17 13:31:09 localhost xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf (unreadable) Mar 17 13:31:10 localhost xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/pcf_drakfont:unscaled (unreadable) I've checked the directory and I have no "fonts"-dir in "/usr/X11R6/lib". It's at the same time as the crash? It is hard to let it crash on teh other site. I sometimes play bzflag and it never crashes for that. It seems my linux crashes only for "web"-things. Bzflaf is also over the web, but have not had 1 crash with that and I suppose bzflag uses AGP more than websites... Can this cause a crash? How can I install "fonts", so I can see if it MAYBE works?
  6. Here is a part of the microsoft website about the price for the united states. Here in Europe, I suppose it will be more expensive, I think: Full Version Media: CD $299.00 Microsoft® Windows XP Professional English North America CD Version Upgrade Media: CD $199.00 Microsoft® Windows XP Professional English Upgrade North America CD Don't forget: no office..... *XP wwith office: Full Version Media: CD $579.00 Microsoft® Office XP Professional Win32 English North America CD8 Version Upgrade Media: CD $329.00 Microsoft® Office XP Professional Win32 English Version Upgrade North America CD *The home edition: Full Version Media: CD $199.00 Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition English North America CD Sku # N09-00360 Version Upgrade Media: CD $99.00 Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition English Upgrade North America CD Anyway, I like linux more, because I trust it more, .... The prices are good and if I had to choose, I would buy a linux-packet. By the way, if you look at the windowsXP-comparisonguide....Linux offers always all the things. Linux is always (from it's birth I suppose) multi-user, networkinstallation is always a possibility,...And about, userfriendliness, it is getting there to my opinion...To my opninion, windows has taken a lot of features that linux had a long time already....
  7. Is it the full version or an upgrade to XP prof?
  8. Consider looking at the price of Windows XP-developper.....
  9. Th price of the powerpack-edition is 69€. A big difference with microsoft I would say. Even the prosuit-edition is (let' say) 100€ cheaper than the STANDARD-windowsedition, last time I asked for a windows-price(1-1,5 year ago)....
  10. I've just checked the prices and they didn't raised their prices. The price stayed the same for prosuite-edition adn the price of the powerpack-edition dropped 10€. The price that is mentioned is the subscription package....
  11. For the configs I would say, make a backup on floppy to besure, saves you a lot of work afterwards if it fails. I suppose all the hidden files in yourhome and maybe also root directory. For partitions. I just started to select the partitions for myself. These are my impressions: (I have a /, /usr, /tmp and /home directory) -What I'm sure off: with /tmp you can set the noexec-flag(read this from the gentoo-securitpages): you cannot execute anything on /tmp, what is normally also not necessary. Also "nosuid", although nothing should be executed anyway. -for "/usr" I have "nosuid", as for "/home" for example..no need for those there....(in my case anyway) These flags are mentionned while mounting them...for automount in fstab. You can also add them during install in "expert"-mode. Anyway, while I'm talking about this. Anybody now what the "encrypted"-flag does precisely? -When my linux crashes(those rare times ... and I think all due to the drivers of nvidia( to my opninion(the latest anyway)), the restore on the next boot-up goes quicker. This can be an impression... I don't know how the journaling is handled internally. You can argue that lesser partitions can be in use when the computer crashes, so less have to, be checked but you can also say that you have always as much info in our journaling system, how much partitions you also have. Anyway, not to bother you further,..I don't know precisely. -I find the main advantage that you can make your system more secure like mentionned above. There may be other advantages. I'll be curious to read them here.....
  12. Ok, it can be that draksound doesn't its job right, but if it is you're driver, you can choose it also manually with draksound...I had a problem with this once and it was fixed quickly this way....

    nvidia

I hope this is what you mean, but when I use xine I have xv-support. I can play films with the opensourcedrivers, almost as good as with those af nvidia. I used the older version of Xfree for this, so I suppose this is also for the newer. I suppose this is what you meant with xvideo. So, it indeed works for grforce2mmx in my case

    nvidia

I build them from tar, but that's teh same....
  15. You're all a bit behind on this... I've downloaded mozilla 1.4a(reinstalled system) 2-3 weeks ago and it runs fine, don't now the differences with 1.3...if there are.

    tv-computer

Wireless mouse/keyboard is not really an option :) -First the batteries are quickley drained(?). -I don't know a wireless mouse that goes through 3 walls, maybe with an amplifier :)(I can probably see my input and output from the street, so the whole street can watch everything :) ).
  17. I agree that if linux is the OS you use the most, it is logical that you buy programs for that OS, but before I used linux, I had some windowsprograms I used. One example: Because we used the program S-PLUS at school for statistics, I have it also at home... Because I know almost never work on windows anymore it is handy to have a program like WineX... I think WineX certainly has it's use...Some neighbours visited us and their oldest son wanted to see linux. A question was if they could run windowsprograms under it.... People mostley now only windows and they have windowsprograms that their used to work with. It is reasonable to say that they still want to use them. About games...If developpers see that their game also sells for the linux-OS, they'll keep converting I think. I know that if it runs under WineX it is less tempting to port it, but I think that how more people use linux, the more chance there is that things will be developped for linux. I use linux because it is stable,.... and there is a lot software for it( mostley opensource ). This is a good start for people I think, considering using linux and it is a lot cheaper(free) than windows(/MacOS?).

    tv-computer

I'm just wondering if there are any devices with th following properties: (I have a geforcecard with a tv-out) -You can output your computer-displayoutput to your tv. - You can control the mouse from your tv. AND (if that wasn't enough) has to be all wireless. I know there are wireless connection for transferring audio and graphic-data, but controlling the mousepointer from your tv is not so easy to find I think and it has to be possible to run under linux.... Why I ask this? I'm not sure if I would install such a system, but my computer is in another room than the tv, so using the cable isn't possible. links to webites of brands,... are welcome. Like to now more about solutions for this, you never know.... Thanks for the help
  19. The easiest way to get it to work, is to run "draksound". try it. You'll get possible drivers for your soundcard.

    nvidia

This is again a post about nvidia. As sonn as I've time and it is available I'll install 9.1final. Now I have the nvidia drivers of nvidia itself, but I'm thinking of not installing them again, because they rarely cause crashes to my opinion...Any case I'll find it out definitely. I'm going to use the XFree opensourde drivers. I'v read this on teh Xfree website: 4.3.0: Support (accelerated) for the Riva 128, 128ZX, TNT, TNT2 (Ultra, Vanta, M64), GeForce (DDR, 256), Quadro, GeForce2 (GTS, Ultra, MX), GeForce3, and Quadro2 is provided by the "nv" driver. (Now the version is higher...) I've a Geforce2. Does this mean (accelerated) that they will be better than the previoous drivers and that their results will come close to that of nvidia iself? If not, I'm still going tp install THEM...:)
