  1. anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here?
  2. i made a little progress on this. it turns out 10.1 had the driver built in, but it was an older one. all i needed to do was load the 1.2 firmware from ipw2100.sourceforge.net. however this older drivers did not support WEP, so i had to upgrade it to the newer one, which i did with the dkms package, but now i can't get the module to load. there is another thread where i am getting help with this part, hopefully someone will make some sense of what's going on with it.
  3. i don't see ipw2100 loaded when i type lsmod. i tried depmod -ae., but i didn't change anything. i'm not sure if it is eth1, that's what it was with the old driver, but i know its not etho because that's my regular network card which is working. when i type iwconfig it shows no wireless connections at all. i guess the problem is that ipw2100 is not getting loaded. I really appreciate the help btw.
  4. here is what i get: [root@localhost firmware]# modprobe ipw2100 [root@localhost firmware]# ifup eth1 [root@localhost firmware]# ifconfig eth1 eth1: error fetching interface information: Device not found [root@localhost firmware]# iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. sit0 no wireless extensions. [root@localhost firmware]# before iwconfig used to bring up the wireless on eth1, but it didnt support wep.
  5. what do i need for a dkms? can i just use urpmi? edit: i got it installed, and i installed the new firwmare 1.3, but now modprobe doesn't bring up the wireless conection anymore.
  6. currently i am running mandrake 10.1, and i am using the driver that came with it for my intel pro wireless 2100 card. i think that is driver ipw2100-0.54. i also downloaded the firmware for that driver which is ipw2100-fw-1.2 i found out that wep doesnt work with this version of the driver, so i want to upgrade to the newest driver ipw2100-1.0.2 and the newest firmware ipw2100-fw-1.3 i am a linux newbies so i was wondering if anyone could give me step by step instructions on how to remove the current driver and install the new one. i believe i need to build the module in the kernel. i also noticed that this install doesnt have the kernel source which i think i need for this application. can someone tell me the command to install the kernel source. Thanks in advance for any help.
  7. also whenever i turn on the wireless eg modprobe ipw2100 the wired connection dies and the only way i can get it back is by rebooting. this is really annoying since linux takes forever to boot up.
  8. i finally got my pro wireless 2100 to work on my mandrake 10.1 install, but i have some questions i'd like some help with. is there a way to make it start up atuomatically? right now i have to typw "# modprobe ipw2100" everytime i boot up the computer second, how do i select which network i connect to? i have two access points that have different wep keys. is there a way to have the wep keys saved and switch easily between the access points? i basically don't really know how to use the iwconfig and the rest of the iw tools so i'm looking for some help on that. thanks in advance.
  9. the card shows up in the mandrake control center, but i don't see it as a network connection, and i don't see any wireless utilities that i can use to start it. there is no firewall before the access point.
  10. just installed mandrake 10.1 and everything works fine except for my wireless card (and my modem but who cares about that) anyway i don't understand why its not working. both my ethernet card and wireless card show up under the control center. my wireless card shows up as: PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter, but i can't figure out how to actually use the wireless card. any help is appreciated. edit: this is especially frustrating since mandrake advertises wireless working out of the box in 10.1 with this being one of the supported cards. besides its just the standard centrino card making it a common enough card that it should work much like my ethernet card.
