good question bvc.
lol lol

sad to see people complain about software patents run ileagal software but think it is ok to tell root he can't do something
Let me ask you this then, should I be pissed at RedHat/Fedora for the following?
rm /etc/hosts rm: remove write-protected regular file `/etc/hosts'? n
rm /etc/passwd /etc/shadow rm: remove regular file `/etc/passwd'? n rm: remove regular file `/etc/shadow'? n
Are they telling me I can't or are they suggesting that I shouldn't? If they are only suggesting that I shouldn't do this, should I still be pissed at them for even the thought of the suggestion?
There's a big difference between SUGGESTING not to do something . And being told flat out you can't do it. So in my opinion i wouldn't be Pissed at Fedora for Suggesting but then again that's just my opinion..
= :D

And here's a pretty good and clear explanation as for what this might mean, for non-lawyers:
Thanks
I love seeing SCO get slammed!

Well here is my take on root having his/her hands tied.
I don't like it, Root is Root for the good and the bad of it.
This is what make Linux so Great! But when a programmer denies access at a root
level it make it kinda commercial.. Granted with linux becoming so popular, alot of
Newbies don't really understand the Power of being Root.. But we don't need programmers
to hold our hands. Sometimes the best way to learn is BY making mistakes...
Also it you want to run as Root all the time, that's on you if you feel safe doing so
than go for it. :D

You may want to upgrade to 10.1 Official, CE had quite a number of bugs that were corrected with Official. Remember CE was nothing more that a Final TesT version to find and work out the last few remaining bugs. either way good luck with our problem i'm sure someone will have an answer for you sooner or later :)

Microstink is doing what it does best! Since it has no facts or unbias lab test, they try to intimidate by spreading F.U.D
When it comes to Open Source NO One should ever listen to them, There a out to cover / protect there own butts. Remember every person that uses Open Source Programs is taking $$ from MS. So to them not only is Open Soft there enemy, but so are the Users who use it..

sellis,
i had something similar happen to me about a year ago, My mobo went completely down the drain during a power outage.. anyway i got my new mobo and processor and all i did was add my memory, drives, sound and video and when i boot MDK it found it all. At the time i was using MDK 9.2... at best i think you have a 50 / 50 chance of no problems remember if this was winblows there would be close to 100% of OS re-installation.
by the way when i first booted MDK ask for Disc1 because of a PCI-Bridge Change after that it was OK that's were the 50/50 part comes in :D
anyway good luck,

darkelve, I believe that these distros do have and update button, I know for sure that Mandrake does even in the strip down version, as for Linspire it might be done through the Click and Run {Not Sure Though} but i figured Linspire can't be that Much different than Xandros both distro are made for the new Linux user and Xandros does there update through Xandros Network {kinda like click and run}...
by the way Gowator i agree with you One of Mandrake Strongest pionts is URPMI but it also very misunderstood... Mandrake has to explain in greater detail how URPMI can help enrich and make things less complicated when install programs and updates..

i agree with tl017, try copying your file to the hard drive. For some reason mdk 10.1 gave a wierd little error when trying to read that the disc. I don't think it a mounting issue but i could be wrong. the error could be cause by a bad rpm. This is what happen to me with when i installed Screem.. it did that exact same thing that's happening to you.. anyway i hope this helps.

Well if could figure out a why to put all my Dvd's in a hdd , trust me i would do it. i must have over 150 Dvd movies, I do have and Xbox but it's mostly for the kids so modding it is not and option,, though i did see one on ebay aready modded and set up with MythTV.. Maybe i do something like that... put for know i looking into the DVDripping or converting to divx. the only thing about divx is i would have to go out and by new hardware to be able to play the movie {wife won't be to happy :D } ..... All Well it could be worst i could be trying to convert VHS to DVD

Yes, it requantizes movies to fit on a DVD-R, but you lose the menus and extras. Also, check the size of source DVD. I've found that a few movies are small enough to fit on DVD-R without compression, and can be copied with k3b.
cool i have to look in to it.
I just want to express my Thanks for all who have helped me in this little endeavor... But please cont. to post so others can be helped..
Again

I've had about a 50% success rate with dvdbackup. It's either in contrib (possibly cooker contrib) or plf.
Will this backup dvd movies to a dvd-r?

Yep but you can write it to a DVD and play it on a DivX compatible DVD player.
These are $30-$40 so the price of a few wrecked DVD's...
For mine at home i actually use my XBOX (with linux) 90% of the time. Its networked to my main PC which has a few hundred Gigs of DivX/Music etc. and its much more convenient than searching for the DVD and putting it on...
Really!!!!! That's awesome, so what you are saying is that i can go and buy a Dixv Dvd player and all i have to is convert my orginal dvd movies to divx then burn the divx movie on my dvd-r and it will play on divx ready player?
