  1. Strange, I posted last night but it didn't come up on this page. Well anyway, everything is installed and XCDRoast still won't work. I get the same error as before: You have to log in as the root user the first time and start XCDROAST to enable it's non-root mode etc., etc. The screen that came up is the newest Alpha 13, if that helps. Later. Pepse.
  2. I don't know if "k3b" works. One reason I downloaded the latest file is because XCDroast wasn't working at all; I get a WARNING: No root configuration file found or not readable! The SU must start and configure blah, blah, blah. So, now my problem is that when I finished the things that bvc mentioned I went out of console and now I can't get back to xcdroast to "make clean". I changed to the tmp directory where the downloaded file is and went to cd to the downloaded tar file and apparently it isn't there because I get an error of "no such file or directory". Is it possible that because of the error it didn't put it in usr/lib or where ever?? When I go to the tmp dir where I downloaded the file that file as well as the un-tarred file are in there but I just can't seem to access it. Later. Pepse.
  3. Thanx, that worked. I was just going by bvc's picture and there was no mention of going "root" . OK, now that I have gdk-pixbuf installed do I "./configure" XCDRoast again or do I just go to "make" then SU to "root" and "make install" ?? Later. Pepse.
  4. OK, I did the first line you quoted and mine showed up the same. But, when I did "urpmi libgdk-pixbuf2-devel" I got a "bash: urpmi: command not found" . What did I miss?? Later. Pepse.
  5. Because I've had a lot of problems I went to XCDROASTs web and downloaded the latest tar.gz file as well as the latest cdrtools file. Well I untarred the cdrtools file and it went good, and then I untarred the XCDRoast and after untarring and doing "./configure" I got an error at the bottom that states: Checking for gdk -pixbuf -config...no Checking for GDK_PIXBUF - version >= 0.8.0...no ***The gdk-pixbuf-config script installed by GDK_PIXBUF could not be found ***If GDK_PIXBUF was installed in PREFIX, make sure the PREFIX/bin is in ***your path, or set the GDK_PIXBUF_CONFIG environment variable to the ***full path to gdk-pixbuf-config. configure: error: Test for gdk_pixbuf failed. See the file INSTALL for help. Well, I did "install --help" and couldn't really understand what was going on so I decided to do a Google search and after going through the first 12 or so pages the only thing I definately understood is that I apparently need GDK_PIXBUF 0.8.0 devel for Mandrake. The only ones I could find are ones for Mandrake 8.1. Do I really need this file?? If so, does anyone know where I can get the Mandrake 9.0 file??

    Scanner Problems.

Funny, after getting your last reply I went and downloaded the backend file to the "temp" diectrory and used your info from the post about 4 back and everything works. I don't know if it was because of the directory I made before or what but everything worked. That is I have the latest stable backend, but it still can't find the scanner. That's ok because I'll still need all of this when I do get a scanner that works. I'll download the frontend later. I have to go out for a few hours but when I get back I'll try to hack at the scanner some more. Thanx for your help. Pepse.

    Scanner Problems.

I must not be getting something right because I couldn't do anything after untarring it so I just eliminated all the stuff I downloaded and decided to start over. But, before I do I gotta ask is it better if I just download the Sane files to Konqueror and not create a directory to put them in?? At least this way I just go to root and untar without having to go to a directory and then maybe when I do "./configure" and "make" and the other stuff it'll work. Steve, at the moment your link looks a little steep for me. Maybe I'll look at it again while waitng for a reply to this mess of mine. Later. Pepse. Sorry for not understanding, so far.

    Scanner Problems.

So far it ain't working. I went to the directory with the tarball (XSANE) and did $ ./configure and the reply is "bash $: command not found . I also, logged in and tried it but I still get the same results. What am I missing?? Pepse.

    Scanner Problems.

Well it didn't make any diff changing slots. But what I now realize is that Linux does recognize my SCSI card but does not recognize the scanner. I've done such things as "sane-find-scanner" and "dmesg" and echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi . I wonder if it is possible that the version of Sane in 9.0 might be the problem?? It is 0.87 and the latest stable is 1.0.11. But, if that could help find the scanner I have a problem with the download. I downloaded the latest stable Sane driver and put it in a directory ( .tar.gz ) and then opened it up, but it is still in the directory and I need to know how to get it out and use it. Also, I did download the Xsane and Sane RPMs into another directory but I don't want to do anything with them unless I have a path to send them to. Any ideas?? Later. Pepse.

    Scanner Problems.

Good thought. I had that problem to no end in whine-doze. I'll give it a shot this afternoon and I'll see what happens. Pepse

    Scanner Problems.

Well, it looks like my SCSI card isn't recognized by "dmesg" . The only thing it recognizes (SCSI-wise) is my LGE CDRW. I also did a "sane-find-scanner" and it didn't find anything. I also did "sane-find-scanner -v" and it checked all SCSI and USB ports without finding anything. So, even tho MDK Control Center sees my SCSI card it seems it isn't recognized anywhere else. So, without having to spend $70 USD on an Adaptec SCSI card how do I resolve this dilema?? I figure that if I can get the Symbios SCSI card recognized then maybe it'll recognize my scanner; or at least I might be on the right track. Later. Pepse.

    Scanner Problems.

OK, I went to terminal, MC, /etc/sane.d, and "hp.conf" and all that's in there is "scsi HP" and "/dev/sg1" , and the date is 03/24/03. I put the scanner on "sg1" because I think/thought it was interfering with my LGE CDRW. So, I actually think I went to the wrong area but that is the way I took your message. Later. Pepse.
  13. OK, to start, I bought a used (but working) HP Scanjet 5P SCSI scanner. I had to buy a SCSI card and 50 to 80 pin cable, too. So, I installed the SCSI card first and booted the computer and it shows the SCSI card in MCC as the Symbios Logic card (good). I shut down and connected the scanner, and yes turned it on, and booted and went to MCC to get the software setup and in MCC clicked on the Scanjet 5P scanner and MCC doesn't see it. The error is: Scannerdrake was not able to detect your HP ScanJet 5P scanner. Please select the device where your scanner is plugged. choose device (the default is: /dev/sg0 ) well I tried all /dev/sgx's and nothing works; that is I go to Xsane and it doesn't detect my scanner. I went to: KDE-configuration-KDE-information-SCSI and it shows my LGE CDRW as the only SCSI device attached. I searched on this board for scanner probs and on one I looked at there is mention in going to root and type "lsmod", I did and there was no scanner listed. I also did "modprobe scanner" and there is nothing. Any ideas?? I have MDK 9.0 Pepse.
  14. :D :D Thank you Richard L. That little tutorial worked great. Although I've been a Linux user for about a year now I don't mind at all if someone gets very simplistic in their instructions. Heck, it's when someone gets too technical that bugs me a bit. Mainly forgetting a part of the command line that once you've been running Linux for awhile you don't think about what you left out. It just gets me to post something like "Huh, What???" Anyway, again, Thanx. Cannonfodder, I had used Opera when I was a whine-doze user, tho not extensively because it seemed a bit trickier to set up. But, I will give it a good go and hopefully it works out better this time. And again thanx to everone that posted. Later. Pepse.
  15. OK, it is in my system, somewhere. But, I am not able to add a launcher for it. If I understand you correctly I put the mouse icon over the KDE logo in the bottom left of my screen and right click and click on panel-add-applet-app launcher (or even quick launcher) and it put an icon in the bottom right area on the other side of my clock. OK, so when I right click on the folder it asks to add an app and of course I can't add Opera because it ain't in MDK 9.0. So, do you have any other ideas as to adding the icon either to my desktop or in the tray at the bottom?? Later. Pepse.
  16. OK, I downloaded the Static version RPM of 6.12; I'll open it later. Being that I have no former version of Opera on my system I assume I won't have any hassles with the 2 dependency issues you mention? Later. Pepse. I gotta few other things to do shortly, that is why I'll work on installing later.
  17. First off, I will go to the Opera web and see how long it takes to download using a 56K modem. I do recall hearing of problems with 6.11, so yea, it would be better if I went with 6.12. Now could you elaborate on this "dependency" issue? I need a better idea of what you're saying. Later. Pepse.
  18. I have a CD from an English Linux mag that includes Opera 6.1. And, whether I use "tar.gz" or "RPMS" there is a choice between "static" and "shared". I have no clue as to the difference. I know I will use the RPM files as I have had luck as of late unloading RPMs. And another question is: I have never taken anything off of a CD before (in Linux), so do I create a directory and click and slide the chosen RPM into the directory to unload or.............?? Later. Pepse.
  19. Yea, I looked at Gphoto and something in KDE for cameras and neither one has my camera model. I even went to Gphoto's web and they don't have my camera. It's an HP 620. So, for now I guess I'll have my wife do the photo editing on her whine-doze computer. Pepse.
  20. OK, I found it and at first I was going to ask about creating a shortcut to desktop, but I discovered that the Linux version is useless. According to the HELP file I should be able to go to "Utilities-Capture/Scan" and be able to upload my pix from my camera, but the Linux version doesn't have "Capture/Scan". Well at least it's a 30 day trial so I really don't have anything to lose. Thanx tho. Later. Pepse.
  21. I downloaded the CompuPic rpm and opened it up and now I can't find where it is. Kpackage shows it as: rpm-X11-Applications-Graphics-Compupic, and the box on the right (in kpackage) shows "Group X11/Applications/Graphics ". I went to my Kstart Applications and looked thru (I'm sure) every place possible and Compupic doesn't show up anywhere. I even hooked up my diggy camera and it didn't kick anything on so I don't know where it could be. Any ideas?? Later. Pepse.
  22. OK, I emailed LGE and they had me call tech support and when I told them of my problem they asked for the mod number and serial number and then said to send it in as it is their problem. So, that is good to know; mainly that they admit it is their problem. Now if they send me a diff model instead of repairing my old one will I have to re-install Xine?? Later. Pepse.
  23. Well, I did purchase a D-Link 7 port hub and everything is fine on that end. So, I set the HP cameras USB setting as a hard drive and then turned the camera on and it said it is connected to the computer; good. Well after a half minute nothing happened so I went to control center and looked at the hardware list and it does recognize the HP 620 as a "/dev/sda" and on the right side of the screen it gives an extensive list about the camera and at the bottom it says "run config tool", so I did and it took me to the partitioning screen and it gave me 6.8 megs of partition. It is called "/mnt/removable"; good. So now I gotta figure out what to do next. I went to Apps-monitoring-KdiskFree and it shows that "new" partition"; good. I went to "Removable Media" on my KDE desktop and there is nothing new there just my CDRW, DVD, and floppy. I see that I am getting somewhere but now I need some comments or to be pointed to a tutorial to tell me how to use this /mnt/sda. Later. Pepse.
  24. OK, I thought XPDF was like haveing Adobe Reader installed. That I could go into it and see what .pdf items I have in there and edit or whatever I needed to do. I think my problem is that I try to see some of these things sorta like whine-doze stuff. That is more than likely my problem. I did go to console and did "rpm -q xpdf" and the reply is: xpdf-1.01-4mdk . So, it is obviously there. Sorry for my stupidity, again. My main desktop is KDE, but seriously I would use Gnome but since I've been running Linux it seems that Gnome isn't as good as KDE; alot of stuff don't work andwhatever else. But that's another matter. Sorry to bother on this one. Later. Pepse.
  25. The results are the same. Maybe I didn't do what I was sure I did. Altho I know if I go to "downloadmanager" I can see an XPDF file I downloaded on 02/15. Pepse
