  1. Well, when I did the nano thing it came back as " bash: nano: command not found . Then I went to /etc/ and typed " nano -w /resolv.conf " and got the same reply " bash: nano: command not found . Then I typed " nano " and got the same reply. I got a feeling nano doesn't exist in my computer. I am doing all of this on my backup hdd with MDK 9.0 the quick no brains needed install; so if nano comes with 9.0 it is not toggled. Lets assume genm is right that I don't have "resolve.conf" how do I create a file?? Or where?? I'm feeling stoopid again. Pepse.
  2. At the moment I still have a modem. But I did have a NiC card in when I installed 9.1 because I plan to go to DSL soon. I removed the NiC card because it was causing Linux to hang up for about a minute on boot and also, because I thought it might be the reason I was getting the error when trying to get my modem connection working. Also, cybrjackle, I looked in the FAQ's you mention and didn't see anything relevent to this error. bvc, I seen your email after cybrjackle and I see that might have been my error when trying to go there, but another thing is that I'm not comfortable with VIM so when going there I tend to get lost/frustrated easy. I am comfortable with MC tho, because it reminds me of a program I had from my DOS days. Anyway, would I be able to find this resolv.conf in MC?? Later. Pepse. Just to make sure you understand I had both the USR 56K modem and 3COM NiC card in at the same time. I've had the modem since I started using Linux over a year ago so I know that shouldn't be a problem.
  3. I couldn't find an answer to this problem via a Google/Linux search or anything on this Board. On my big hdd I installed MDK 9.1 and when setting up my internet connection I get it completed and try to connect and get an error of: /etc/resolve.conf " and something about going to "net_monitor " , which I do and it can't connect and says to go to MCC to fix the problem. And of course when I go there and redo the wizard I end up with the same results and of course it becomes a vicious circle. I even tried to get to " resolve.conf " thru vim to no avail. How do I resolve this dilemma?? There is a mention of something about leaving this resolve.conf blank; but of course I gotta get there first. Will this problem give me a hassle with DSL or is it a modem issue?? Pepse.
  4. Well now here is the strange thing. I was able to copy my Mozilla bookmarks to a floppy after spending about 10 minutes of trying, but I did finally get it to copy. But then I realized I had some bookmarks in Galeon and once again I couldn't get it to copy to a floppy or a cdr. I couldn't even get it to copy my address' to a floppy or cdr, so in that case I just printed them out. On my last attempt to copy to a floppy or CDR I got an error of: " Couldn't save bookmarks in /mnt/floppy. Permission denied. " Got a similar error when trying to burn it on a CDR. The attempts before were to the degree of getting nothing to respond at all. I mean when I go to the "Save AS" wizard where this should it don't. A bit frustrating but I will try a few more ideas and then just format the drive and put 9.1 on clean. I feel some of my problems might be caused from "updating" 9.0. As for the internet connection I did some hacking and got it to work for now; or maybe longer. Pepse.

    Ethernet Cards.

OK, that is helpful. A friend mentioned about getting a router because of that dial up type info and with 2 computers we could/would have 2 different logon address' or something like that. I remember for sure he said the router would keep things straight between the 2 computers, anyway. As for the brand I always try to check with the user boards before buying so as to not get something that Linux doesn't like. Thanx. Pepse.
  6. OK, the problem I have is that I installed MDK 9.1 over 9.0 and I am not happy with the results of the Updating it did (I put 9.1 on a smaller harddrive to test and I am happy with it). It didn't include some of the software I seen on the 9.1 only hdd, so I want to format and put 9.1 on my big drive but I need to save my bookmarks and now since I updated 9.0 with 9.1 my Eroaster doesn't work and even before I upgraded my XCDroast was toast, and K3B? didn't get installed with the update. So I need someway to backup my bookmarks and I was wondering if there is a way to use the floppydrive to do it?? The rest of the stuff I ain't worried about as far as it goes. I got way too many bookmarks to hand write on paper. Anther thing the updating did was to kill my dialup connection to the point that the wizard couldn't bring it back. I even tried net_monitor and I get an error of something about " /etc/resolve.com ". Pepse. I am thankful I still have this little 4.3 G hdd with 9.0 on it.

    Ethernet Cards.

Don't have the DSL yet (hopefully by the 1st of OCT.), but another question on this stuff is when it comes to routers do I need to avoid certain brands?? Like at Walmart they have one called Network Anywhere; yes that is the brand name. Since we have 2 computers I plan to get a router but gotta check to make sure. There was no information on the MDK hardware database page. Pepse.
  8. Well for those of you that remember I was the guy that pre-ordered MDK 9.0 last year and had one heck of a time getting it. Well, I finally got it; OK actually I got 9.1. And I guess to compensate for my lo-o-ong wait they sent me the Power Pack. So the first thing I did was I bought a small 7.5Gig hdd and plugged in everything like printer, scanner and put in a 3COM ethernet card and everything was recognized and configured and that is just great but now comes the tricky part, I would like to put this 9.1 on my 30Gig hdd which is my main hdd with 9.0 on it. But the only thing I really want to save is my " /home/jim " partition and unless I missed something when I did 9.1 on my 7.5Gig I'm afraid of losing my Mozilla and Galeon web browsers. What little bit of other stuff I have on /home/jim if I lose it I lose it. Being that I'm going from 9.0 to 9.1 I think 9.1 will partition my hdd differently that 9.0. As of now my /dev/hda1 is parted at 5.3Gig and /dev/home is 22Gig. I feel likeI'm starting over and don't know for sure what to do. Funny tho I didn't have this problem when I went from 8.1 to 9.0. One thing tho with 9.1, it hangs on startup when it get to the ethernet card; hangs there for about 45 seconds to a minute then continues to load but there are no errors. I put the ethernet card in because we plan to switch to DSL shortly. Later. Pepse.

    Ethernet Cards.

I put the 3com in and it is recognized in MCC. As for speeds from the provider I can choose 256k or 512K. At this time I can only afford 256k, but when you consider I am going from a 56k modem to 256k DSL; heck at this point 256k will be sceamin' to me. All 3 cards have only the RJ45 jack. Firmware?? My box or the provider?? As for not going USB, one of my thoughts was that Linux might not be totally set up for it. Another is that I feel better with a hardcard inside the box. Later. Pepse.

    Ethernet Cards.

:) I will check them out this weekend; the 3COM first. As for age of cards the most recent copyright is 1995 on the 3COM card, the other 2 are 1994. Later. Pepse.
  11. :) Thanx for the tips, at least I know I got a chance to view the videos. Later. Pepse.

    Ethernet Cards.

Being that we are getting DSL out my way (I live in the country) I need to install an Ethernet card. I have 3 diiferent cards that I have acquired over the years (didn't want to toss them, but at the time had no use for them). What I need to know is which one would be best for Linux, if it matters on these cards. One is a D-Link DE-220T, another is a 3COM 3C595-TX but it has a sticker on the removable chip that says Farallon, and the other one is an SMC; not sure of the model number. The 3COM is PCI the other 2 are ISA. Like I said "I'm not sure if it matters but to be sure I decided to ask. I am still running MDK 9.0. I just got 9.1 Power Pak but I'm not yet ready to deal with it. Later. Pepse.
  13. I am not awake enough to word that right but the problem is that with my digital camera I am able to record a couple minutes of video and when I uploaded my pics and the video piece into my hdd I am able to view all pics but when trying to see the video I get an error of: Plugger: No appropriate application for file type Video/x-msvideo found! .avi file . I have Xine in my system if that helps. I still have MDK 9.0, and a 64 meg Nvidia card with all the fairly current updates; 3-D acceleration. Later. Pepse.
  14. The battle isn't over yet. My scanner isn't recognized by anything; well almost anything. In my USB view the scanner is listed on my USB hub but it is listed in RED, whereas my USB mouse is listed in black. I did "modprobe scanner", nothing. I did "sane-find-scanner", nothing. I did "scanimage --version" and it comes back as (sane-backends) 1.0.8; backend version 1.0.8 . I did "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" and it finds the scanner and gives me the info I need for making changes in "/etc/sane.d/plustek.conf", which I did. I "cd" to "/etc" then went to midnight commander to /sane.d and edited the file to show the vendor number and product number and also to change the line "/dev/usbscanner" to "/dev/usb/scanner0" as I have read in the plustek readme and I can't remember where else I read this stuff. What seems to be my big problem is that it still comes up with the Mandrake 9.0 installed version of Sane. Is it possible that I have to move (mv) everything in my Sane diectory to somewhere else?? And I (for what it was worth) rebooted the computer and nothing changed. Cannonfodder, I don't know why your plustek stuff is different than mine; in Sane's page it points to the fact that I need to download the Plustek 0.45-5 tarball. Like I said it is a new Epson Perfection 1250 Photo USB scanner. Also, I didn't initially check your link to "here" because on my screen it looked to be the same color (black) that the rest of the sentence was. Anyway that is where I am; still close to lost. Pepse. Also, I did "rpm -qa | grep sane" and the reply is: xsane-0.87-1mdk sane-backends-1.0.8-5mdk libsane1-1.0.8-5mdk xsane-gimp-0.87-1mdk And the I did: rpm -qa | grep plustek and the answer is: nothing comes up.
  15. :D Hey, that worked; moving the plustek-sane to the sane-backends directory. Still it is rather strange that I had to go about it that way. But, thanx alot for your help. Later. Pepse.
  16. The sane-backends directory is in the Sane directory. And I put the sane-plustek tar in the Sane directory, also. After I uncompress the sane-backends file I am to: "cd sane-backends-1.0.12" and then when I get to that diectory I am to uncompress the sane-plustek-0.45-5 file in there. I am that far but the da*n plustek file won't untar in the sane-backends diectory. Pepse.
  17. No, that ain't where I want it. It's got to be untarred in the sane-backends file after I first uncompress it. That is where my problem is, I can't seem to get the sane-plustek file to untar in the sane-backends directory. Pepse.
  18. It is in: /home/Jim/Sane/plustek-sane-0.45-5.tar.gz . Pepse.
  19. It's a USB scanner. And I have read these and other tutorials and done everything that I should and for some da*n reason I just can't seem to un-tar a file within a file. That is my problem. I mean just last night (Friday) I untarred and configged and made a piece of software off a CD; and I've never done that before and it was a piece of cake. Also, I have done (what I feel) is a fairly thourough search for ways to do this before I posted here. Hell, I just don't get it?!? I've untarred alot of stuff in the past 15 months and this is a bit*^. I don't know what else to say. Pepse.
  20. :? I'm not mad you people just this situation. First to say is that I am doing all of this in root, not in SU which is how to start un-tarring things. I pointed out that when I click on /home/Konqueror that that is where everything is. OK, hopefully that tells you where I am; not including losing my mind. True the problem I have here is that this is the first time I've had to un-tar something within something and I am going nutz. I should've taken my wife's advice and returned this scanner and got one that doesn't need a file within a file, but then I wouldn't be any smarter  . Anyway, I am not getting anywhere with this, except the usual errors, and beleive me I have tried everything suggested, including the plustek module that ain't for my scanner. My fault I should've mentioned that I have an Epson Perfection 1250 Photo which needs the sane-plustek driver to work. Slap me later. Now my thought is since this doesn't seem to be working then are there any suggestions as to what other method I should use?? Just a small warning: I don't know beans about ARK, except that it is in my MDK 9.0. And another thing I do not have the scanner plugged in to my USB port, if it matters, it shouldn't but I thought I'd mention it. Pepse.
  21. SDMF, yes it is in a directory in /home/ME-Konqueror Sane. ezroller, the -p option didn't work. Same error. Pepse.
  22. I just had a thought (and if I'm right don't call me stoopid, brain dead yes, stoopid, no) but should I have configured and did "make" and "make install" on the sane backends before I dealt with trying to un-tar the plustek file?? There is/was no indication from plustek that I do, bu-u-u-u-u-ut.......just a thought. Pepse.
  23. I did that and got the same error. The only thing I know about ARK is that it comes up on my screen when I boot or reboot. And I checked again and the file is in my Sane directory. Pepse.
  24. I am having a problem trying to un-tar the sane-plustek file inside the sane-backends directory. I am suppose to: (1) download the latest sane backends into a directory; I did, it is in a directory called Sane. (2) I also downloaded the sane-plustek file into the Sane directory, then (3) I am to un-tar the sane backends file in the Sane directory (I did), then change directory to "sane-backends-x.x.x.x, I did, and then un-tar the sane-plustek file into the sane-backends file; so far "yeah right", it won't go. I got the tutorial from the plustek USB doc file. Followed the instructions and it just won't un-tar. When I do: "tar -zxvf /Sane/plustek-sane-0.45-5.tar.gz" I get an error of: tar (child): /Sane/plustek-sane-0.45-5.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors I have tried various ways of doing this and I still get the same error. What am I missing?? Pepse.

    Removing Files.

Sorry for being vague. Yes, what I want to do is totally remove all of the stuff pertaining to the new Sane stuff and Plustek stuff I downloaded, as well as all the XCDRoast rpms and sorta clean out my unecessary files and what. As for how I should've downloaded and handled the Sane and Plustek stuff, it amounts to not reading the instructions clearly. Your way is what I was supposed to do. Later. Pepse.
