  1. NO luck. I think I am missing something in the way I do it. Just so you know I use Ixthusdan's post from page 1 that starts "You may have a slight mess, but that's what makes it fun" to load the stuff and make changes in "mc". But, also, I am doing this thru "failsafe" as I don't trust doing this from a console thru XFree 3.3.6 W/ experimental 3D. I don't want to mess that up and not have anything. Also, (I think because of being in "failsafe) I cant check XF86Config-4. But, I did try "urpmi /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586/*.rpm " and this was the reply: Module nvidia loaded, with warnings. nvidia.0 installed successfully --WARNING!! libglx.a libGLcore.a libGL.so.1.0.2960 libGL.a libGL.so.1.0 libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so.1.3.403 ---The above files possibly belong to a conflicting MESA rpm, ---or to a previous stale NVIDIA distribution ---They have been renamed to xxx. <originalFile>.RPMSAVE to avoid conflicting with the files contained within this package. And then of course I went back and set it for XFree 4.x.x and nothing changed. Also, there is no file in the nVidia area pertainging to the new software. Oh, and being that I removed all that I could "mc" is not acting up; it is stable. Later. Pepse.
  2. OK, so as I understand this I uninstall the "2960" files and I re-install the "4191" files?? Just want to make sure I got it. Also, as for uninstalling; do I put the # in front of the string or..............?? I'll deal with the "NFS" prob after this. Later. Pepse.
  3. OK, I think I have found the problem. bvc, I did the "rpm -qa | grep NVIDIA " and this is the reply: NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.19-16mdk-1.0-2960.1mdk NVIDIA_kerne--1.0-4191 NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191 So then I did " rpm -qla | grep NVIDIA " and got this reply: /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.19-16mdk-1.0 /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.19-16mdk-1.0/README That is the first 2 lines; the rest is similar to yours. Well, it looks as tho I gotta remove the old 2960 stuff I installed awhile back. Before I did your suggestion I did try to go back to XFree 4.x.x and had no luck. Oh and as for my shutdown/reboot problem with NFS, Gltz mentions that the workaround would be to disable APMD. So, how/where do I go to do that?? It's rather annoying having to shut off the computer when it gets to the part about the NFS prob. Especially when I have this driver prob to correct. Later. Pepse.
  4. Well, first, I noticed that all the drivers I loaded are still aound. I thought that vim would be different in XFree 3.3.6. So, I can repeat what I see in vim. In "module" I have: Load "dbe" # Double-buffering extention Load "v41" Video for Linux Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extentions/libglx.so In Section "Device" I have: Identifier "device1" VendorName "nVidia Corporation" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic)" Driver "nvidia" Option "DPMS" So, on the one hand it would seem that the stiuff in modules is OK, but there is still something wrong in Section "Device" Now if I change "nvidia" back to "nv" will anything change in "BoardName"?? If it helps any, I went to: ls rpm -ivh NVIDIA* and the reply is: ls: rpm: No such file or directory NVIDIA: 280910 NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.src.rpm 280911 NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.src.rpm I can access mc again, and it isn't all messed up. So, should I try and do all of this again; in XFree 3.3.6 or should I reboot and go back to XFree 4.0.1?? Later. Pepse.
  5. Yes, I did get nvidia back to nv but I still have to change the "module' back to "LOAD": GLX. Right now it it something like: "LOAD: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so" or something like that. But I have crashed just about everthing in the "console" area. MC is crashed and I can't edit anything else in vim. So, I have to figure out how to get those things working, especially "mc". I'm still trying to find a book that might help me deal with those problems, but I haven't seen anything at Borders that would help. Just about every book they have deals with Redhat. Later. Pepse.
  6. :D :D I DID IT!! I cheated but I am back with my MDK 9.0. After a week of frustration...I was ][ this close to re-formatting the da*n thing and I decided to try and set it to XFree 3.3.6 with experimental 3D, Hey it's working. The one thing I did was go XFree86 and try to figure out what they might have. It was suggested that I go Google and try the problem there. I did and the solutuion was to download a file for a patch for a problem with some nVidia cards not working right with some monitor res's. Well I couldn't get the floppy to boot so, being that I knew of a possible problem I might have, I went and changed the monitor to "generic xxx xxx" and that didn't work so as a "Last thing before I reformat" I decided to go back in and change the version of XFee. Now I know the (to me) scary part is that I have to try and figure out what to do about the problem with XFree 4.x.x and my nVidia driver. By the way the drivers for the card are in XFree 4.x.x but I have to figure out how to get the mistakes I made out. Later. Pepse. Mandrake 9.0 (D) Tyan Trinity mobo w/600 mhz CPU P3 512 megs of SDRAM (And soon to rise) SB LIVE 5.1 CDRW DVD w/Xine nVidia GeForce 2 MX 400 (It will work better someday) WD 30Gg HDD
  7. OK, I have been to VIM and am trying to figure out how to edit things. Actually right now I am in the Help area and can't remember what command to use to get out of it. But, I am also in the vim /etc/X11/XF86Congig-4 area and I can't figure out how to edit the things I need to edit. I went into the Help area to figure out what to do and now I can't get out of it. BUT, in the Section "Device" the identifier, vendor name, board name and driver are all in purple but the Option is in lite blue. The name in "option" is "DPMS". The "driver" still shows "nvidia" which (as I recall) is what I have to change to "nv" As for "modules" I remember a long line in lite blue pertaining to /lib/glx.so , but I don't know how to change/correct it. For what it's worth I did put in a ATI AGP card and nothing changed. I still can't get to "X" or MDK. Later. Pepse. By the way why can't I print these pages on a whine-doze computer?? All I get is garbled text. I have the first page copied from when I was on my Linux box but it won't print in a whine-doze computer.
  8. Come to think of it would I be farther ahead to install a different vid card?? I have an old Genoa Raptor PCI and an old 16meg ATI AGP card. Later. Pepse.
  9. Well, I'm still nowhere. Everything is messed up. I can't get to "X" or "mc". The problem with "mc' is a bad error: warning: [gpm.c(857)].[me@localhost etc]$ last=/home/flepied/RPM/BUILD/gpm-1.20.0/src/liblow.cvc/0 This is repeated a few times and ends with: Warning: closing connection. As for "kedit" when I type: kedit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 I get: kedit: cannot connect to X server. Possibly, stupidly, I reloaded the kernel and GLX files for the nVidia 4191s. But I didn't have any errors. So, how do I change nvidia back to nv ?? Or, how do I get to anywhere?? I mean I tried "failsafe" and still only got as far as where X is suppose to start and it stops at the point of "localhost login". Later. Pepse. And yet I still have patience.
  10. Oh, and when I get to the localhost login I type "myname" and password and get: [myname@localhost myname]$ . If that helps any. Later. Pepse.
  11. Well, now I am screwed. I can't get on my computer (I'm using my wife's whine-doze). When using bvc's stuff I got to the point where I figured it would be best to go online and type the replies from his post. Things like: rpm -ql NVIDIA_GLX , which gave me a screen near identical to his. Then I did the rpm -ef --nodeps NVIDIA_GLX and got this for a reply: ---Warning!! xxx.libGLcore.a.RPMSAVE xxx.libglx.a.RPMSAVE xxx.libGL.so.1.0.2960.RPMSAVE xxx.libGL.so.1.0.RPMSAVE xxx.libGL.so.1.2.RPMSAVE xxx.libGL.so.1.3.403.RPMSAVE ---The above files are apparently saved files from a ---non-NVIDIA distribution (possibly MESA) that were ---put aside while the NVIDIA rpm was installed. ---They are now being restored. OK, then I went to: rpm -ef --nodeps NVIDIA_kernel and got this for a reply: error: package NVIDIA_kernel is not installed. OK, then I looked at his stuff dealing with slocate and I don't recall the reply from root but I then decided to go online to type in the answers and I couldn't connect; all I can remember is a "kdeinit" error. So, I decided to reboot the computer and all I can get to is: localhost login: . I did manage to get to XFdrake --expert but nothing there was unusual. I don't know if it is an "X" problem or??????? I'll be back online in about 11 or 12 hours; around midnight central standard time. Later. Pepse.
  12. I just noticed when I went back to kdeit under Section 'device' it shows: Identifier 'devicel' VendorName 'nVidia Corporation' Boardname 'NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic) ((what I installed on initial load of MDK9)) Driver 'nvidia' ((what I changed it to from 'nv' )) Option 'DPMS' Later. Pepse.
  13. OK, it was good and it was bad. First the good news. I went thru Ixthusdan's "plan" and most everything worked. It loaded the "rpms", but then when I went to urpmi /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586/*.rpm it came back with: installing /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4192.i586.rpm /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.i586.rpm Preparing... ****************************************************** Installation failed: package NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191 is already installed So, is that good or not?? Then I went back to /inittab/ and changed the value 3 back to 5; no problem. Then I went to kedit/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and looked at the "module" and it shows: load 'glx' # 3d layer . Then I went to the drivers part and changed 'nv' to 'nvidia' and saved it.Then I went back to root and got this stuff: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". [root@localhost me]# Mutex destroy failure: Device or resource busy kdeinit: Fatal IO error: client killed kdeinit: sending SIGHUP to children. kdeinit: sending SIGTERM to children. kdeinit: exit. I don't know what's going on. I went to XFdrake and there are no new drivers for nVidia. I did reboot the computer. Later. Pepse.
  14. Well I went there and hilited it and dbl clkd and nothing happened and then hit enter and nothing happened. I looked at the drop down menus and didn't find anything useful. Later. Pepse.
  15. Ixthusdan, Well, first and worst; I went to konsole amd logged in and then typed: /etc/inittab and got a reply of: bash: /etc/inittab: Permission denied . Your move. Second, at the end of your post you mention "To do file steps< I like Midnight Commander, mc, because I am a GUI person and it is sort of dosshell type program, blah, blah, blah . If you are talking of this whole Konsole thing and such I understand it (yeah I'm from the dos days; a sreamin' 80286/16 with 1meg of ram, oh yeah). Later. Pepse. I don't mind this too much; I gotta learn the inner workings, too.
  16. First of all let me repeat on thing. I abhor "X". Other than that I'll try to tell you what happened. I went to nVidia's site and downloaded the GLX rpm for the "2960" driver and the kernel rpm for the same (2960). I did this because I seen something about needing to download them files. OK, I did and then went to Konqueror and dbl clkd on the rpm's and it took me to "Kpackage" and I clkd "install", and it did. I did the same for the 2960 rpm. It was then I noticed the big lime green and white nVidia logo when I rebooted. Then I seen somewhere to download the "3123" tar.gz files; I did. Then I printed out the man pages and went to the section for downloading tars. Well I tried and nothing happened. Then on nVidia's site I noticed the newer 4191 files so I downloaded them. I then used the nVidia man to install the 4191 files as such: tar xvzf NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.tar.gz . I then get an error of: tar (child) : NVIDIA_kernel-1.0_4191.tar.gzz: cannot open: No such file or directory . tar (child( error is not recoverable exiting now Child returned status 2 Error exit delayed from previous errors. I deleted the 2960 and 3123 files. I did install the "4191" rpm's and nothing unusual happened. Actually nothing happened. bvc, the NFS stuff showed up after trying various things pertaining to the nVidia stuff. nVidia recommends I exit the X server and set my default runlevel to boot to console and not start up X. Counterspy, I will try those after I get done here. Ixthusdan, the items in parenthesis, should I use them now or??? Glitz, should I type "kluge" in a search on this board to get the answers to your comment?? Later. Pepse.
  17. OK, I tried to install the latest drivers for my nVidia GeForce 2 vid card (4191 drivers). First I downloaded the tar.gz and then the rpm's. Anyway after trying to install the tar.gz (with help from the man from nVidia) I thought I had the right stuff when I went to XFdrake and changed the driver to Nvidia GeForce (fbdev) (( i don't recall that driver listed on initial loading on MDK 9)). So, for reasons I can't remember I decided to reboot to get the driver to activate. On reboot I got this error: Unmounting NFS Filesystems: Cannot mountprog RPC: Program not registered. Unmount 2: Device or resource busy. Unmount: /net: device is busy So, anyway I really can't shutdown or reboot because of this problem, and of course I can't figure out how to install the tar.gz's or rpms thru a terminal. I did go to Konqueror and dbl clicked on the rpms and it apparently loaded the but there is nothing new in XFdrake. Earlier I downloaded the 3123 rpms and when I was able to reboot I got an nVidia screen momentarily; so something is installed but I don't know what. Any ideas on either prob?? I went to Linux Newbie Help Files and couldn't find anything useful for the nVidia stuff. Later. Pepse.
  18. The link in DOlson's tutorial is no good. I get an error of: mdkextras.by-a.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again. I tried it about 5 or 6 times and I get the same error. Later. Pepse.
  19. OK, I got it. It's all in the system. Of course the printer still won't work, BUT I was trying to cheat like I did in whine-doze. Turns out that Linux is smarter. I was trying to get a Compaq printer that is a copy of the Lexmark Z33 to work; except that Compaq uses a different chip that dosen't recognize Linux. But, once again I got a tutorial for future reference. Thanx again. Later. Pepse.
  20. OK, I have to install shockwave again as I screwed up and re-did my MDK 9.0 (I didn't listen to people and, well that's another story). Anyway I had to do this before and on the old board spiedra and rolf said what to do and it worked then. I went back to the old board so I could do it again and it apparently isn't working. I will try and link it now so you can see what was said: http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...6834&highlight= . If that don't work just go to the old board and do a search for articles by Pepse. I mean I did go to konsole and create 2 windows and took the stuff from the left side and put it in the right side and it appears that nothing changed. I went to a web that one of my grandrats wanted to see something on and nothing changed. So I assume I screwed up. Let me know what I did or didn't do?? Later. Pepse.
  21. I downloaded that printer software again and I still get the same message: ERROR ARK Gzip archives need to have the extension 'gz' . So, then I went to TUCOWS to download anything with a tar.gz and I downloaded McAfee antivirus and when I went to open it up I got this message: ERROR ARK I can't fork a decompressor . Then I went to MCC to download the software for GZ and it stated that the software is already in my system. Then I downloaded Opera 6.1.1 and when I clicked on that file it gave me the contents of the files and the only 2 I could access ended in 'sh' . I did click on the install.sh and it did some things and whatever it opened I have no idea where it went. Later. Pepse.
  22. Yeah, I had it plugged in because MDK recognised it as a Compaq. Yeah, I know it is a gamble on guessing, but I got this printer at a 2nd hand store for $5.00. And looking around the printer case I found that it was made in Aug., 01. The reason for the former owner to get rid of it would be the fact that it ran out of ink and it is cheaper to buy another cheap printer than to replace the carts. I see this alot in 2nd hand stores. I have seen this alot lately. So, if it don't work on Linux I know it will work on whine-doze. And yes if this does work, or not, I will post. Later. Pepse.
  23. I looked at the file again and it does end with tar.gz . But, yeah I know that Lexmark & Kodak and Compaq are the same, it's just that there is no Linux software on Compaq's site and after I looked at the printer archives in MCC the model I have ain't listed. The Compaqs they do have show the Lexmark driver to use. But this IJ650 doesn't come up even in most stores when looking for ink refills. Walmart has a LXMK Z33 with digital camera, and that is how I figured it should be the same. Plus the ink carts are Lexmark. Anyway I will download that software again and see what happens. Later. Pepse.
  24. I downloaded some Lexmark/Linux software and when trying to unzip it I get an error of: ERROR ARK Gzip archives need to have the extension 'gz' . I know I have unzipped some other stuff before with no probs, but this time I get that error. This download ain't too important because I am trying to cheat. The printer is actually a Compaq, but looks like a Lexmark Z33. I do plan to get a Lexmark Z35 Photocapable printer, but if my problem is actually in my system then that other printer ain't gonna work. Ideas? Later. Pepse.

    DVD Player Probs.

:D Well, now it works. As I mentioned a couple posts back when downloading the RPMs I get an error, but I went ahead and tried it again and now the DVD player works pretty good. I didn't try the DVD, but it works with D4D and D5D. I get a little "digital freezing" but that might be due to only 256 megs of ram and a 600 meg processor. Does anybody know the apparent diffs between D4D, D5D, and DVD?? I checked the movie I have in D4D and D5D and can't tell any diffs but I'm sure it's minor. I'm happy :D :D . Later. Pepse.
