  1. I would like to be able to choose root at the login prompt in Mandrake 10.0 I know that it is somewhat unsafe to login as root and that I can achieve the same effect by typing su into a console but please humor me :P Anyway to do it? Thanks moved from tips & tricks (anon)
  2. I just want to use it in place of my current kernel
  3. I have just downloaded the 2.6.10 kernel source rpm for Mandrake, but i don't really know what to do with it. I tried rpm -i but it has installed somewhere and I cannot find it (I thought it would be in usr/src/somewhere) Then I tried rpmbuild but it claims there is no rpmbuild command please tell me what to do. Thanks moved from Installing MDK (anon)
  4. I find that a great excuse to do a completely fresh install :P Anyway solved thanks aioshin!
  5. Hi, I currently have a dual boot with Mandrake 10.0 and Windoze XP, I never use windoze anymore so I want to install Fedora Core instead. I would like any tips that people have as I have heard many interesting things. I would partition HD into 3, Swap, ext3Mandrake & ext3Fedora but I would make one of the ext3s larger and have my docs on this partition. I have read that you can share the Home folder between the two distros? true? Also that you can install lilo in the first distro installation and then in the second installation not allow lilo to write to the MBR then copy the boot folder into the first distro's boot folder? true? Also any order in which I should install the distros? I am performing a clean install of both distros. Thanks
  6. Hi, I previously had 2 windows partion on the same HD as linux, Mandrake 10.0 detected these no problems but now I have merged these 2 windows partitions and Mandrake has not removed the old partition, but still allows access to the current windows partition. I have gone into Diskdrake to try to remove but of course it does not show up as a partition. So how do I remove the partition from the mnt file which starts on boot. I know I need to remove the entry from a certain file but can't remember which one. NB: I had to edit the file when I was running RedHat 7.3 because it didn't detect the partition Thanks
  7. Solved! Thanks PMo6022, I edited lilo.conf to read acpi=force, then ran lilo -v. All works well.
  8. That's good mate I'm glad your still interested. Unfortunately its not a case issue because I just checked and they are lowercase. Both acpi and acpid are installed, I have tried downloading the latest versions but they are already the ones installed. I haven't tried noapic or nolapic so I'll have a go.
  9. Thanks I had the latest GPhoto2 but I went back to digikam 0.6 and everything is fine again. Not sure if Digikam 0.7 RPM installed properly. Thanks
  10. Unfortunately none of the above has worked I have tried ACPI = On,HT & Off. I ran lilo -v to confirm the change but none work. Does anyone use LinuxSMP and ACPI successfully, I have resigned to having to turn the computer off myself. Thanks Anyway
  11. Hey, Is anyone else using Digikam 0.7 on mandrake 10.0? I have a new Sony cybershot but my model is not supported. When I choose the closest model available it says the device is not connected despite the fact that the camera displays the usb connected. Thanks
  12. No, the change from ACPI=ht to ACPI=off didn't work at all, any other ideas?
  13. I have an IBM motherboard that definitely supports Power management because I have a dual boot with windoze and that auto shuts down. There are no bios updates available. Lilo.conf already had acpi=ht so i have altered this to acpi=off hopefully will work. What is the deal with ACPI vs. APM?
