  1. Yes 98 and 2000 are on seperate partitions. I tried to add an entry to Lilo directing it to the partition with 98 and a seperate entry for the 2000 partition but, it still goes into to 2000 boot manager either way. It might have something to do with the boot.ini on the Windows systems. I haven't looked yet, but the boot.ini should be on the C: drive, which is Windows 98. I might play around with that and let you guys know what I find out. Don't worry, I'll make sure I backup the original boot.ini so I don't screw it up completey.
  2. Hi, this question sounds like it should be simple, I hope. I have Windows 2000, Windows 98 and Mandrakelinux 10.0. When I turn on the computer, I get the Lilo boot manager. At the bottom is listed windows. If I select windows, I go into the Windows 2000 boot manager where 2000 and 98 are listed. Can I make Lilo list Win 2000 and Win 98 in it's menu and bypass the 2000 boot manager? Thanks!
  3. Thanks fellas! I just installed Ubuntu and it solved all of my Mandrake problems.
  4. I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I fixed my problem! The bad new is that I did it by installing Ubuntu :woops: Thanks for all the help in the mean time. You guys are a great community!
  5. Thanks bvc. I do like PM8, but in this case, it didn't work. Anyway, I know this is off topic, but I see you support Ubuntu. Is that one good? I've read good things. Mandrake is giving me problems and if I can't figure it out, I'm thinking of trying another distro and Ubuntu was one I was considering. I don't want to fill this board with Ubuntu off topic posts, so feel free to email me at keithmj1026@yahoo.com with any pros and cons if you have a moment to do so. Thanks!
  6. Hello. I want to put some kind of wirless adapter in my computer with Mandrake so I can connect to my network. I found this PCI card from D-Link for a good price: DWL-520 Air Wireless 2.4GHz PCI Adapter, 802.11b I looked it up in the hardware compatability database at mandrake.org for Mandrakelinux 10.0. It didn't find any information about any D-Link wirless components. Can anyone make a good guess if this hardware will work with Mandrake? Thanks! [moved back to Hardware by spinynorman :)]
  7. Me again. I did as you guys suggested and used the Mandrake disk utility. Sure enough, it worked like a charm. Thanks a bunch, for now on when it comes to dealing with the Linux partitions, I'll go straight to that utility and forget PM.
  8. Honestly Chris, I don't know. I was having problems with installation. During the install I eventually got to the part where I test my video. After a couple of tries I got to a blue screen with crosshairs that I could control with the mouse and that was it. I waited the 12 seconds, or whatever it said in the docs and pressed every key on the keyboard. Anyway, I rebooted and it went into the Mandrake text logon. I wanted to try again from scratch and make the whole drive one dos partition again. I had done this before, and PM saw everything fine. Just this time its not working. I will use the Mandrake tool, as you guys have suggested, tomorrow or as soon as I get a chance. I'll keep you posted... literally!
  9. Hello. Due to some istallation trouble I'm having with 10.0 official, which is the subject of another forum, I am trying to completely remove all Linux partitions and start from scratch. I have 10 gig with Windows ME using 5 and ML on the other. I have done this before and it worked fine, but this time I am not as sucessful. On Win ME I have PartitionMagic 8.0 installed. I wanted to delete all Linux partitions and make the whole 10 gig one DOS primary partition again. When I booted into Win ME and started PM, I got several boot sector errors that PM said it fixed. After each error was fixed, I got and init error that it didn't recognize the drive letter and PM would not start. I rebooted with a Win 98 boot disk and started fdisk. It showed one primary partition of 5 gig and another extended partition. I told fdisk to delete the extended partition. I knew something wasn't right because I did't get the error that I had to delete logical partitions before the extended one. Afterwards, fdisk only showed the primary partition with Win ME. When I rebooted, it went into the Linux boot, which again was not expected. Finally it gave me an error that it couldn't boot so I hit a key, as told, and went into the boot manager and started Windows. I started PM again and it showed the one 5 gig partition as my whole drive and nothing more. I can't see the other 5 gig, it should at least be showing 10 gig overall with 5 partitioned and the other 5 unallocated. Do I need to format the drive and reinstall ME as well? If I do, will it format the whole 10 or just the 5? Would it help to restore the master boot record with fdisk? Thanks.
  10. Hello again. I don't have much time, but I took a second to look at what server was dying in the log. It said: Trying with server driver: fbdey Server died Starting step 'selectLanguage' This is where I get the DOS style box asking me to select the language, when I should be getting the fancy looking one in the docs. I'm not sure what the message means, but it doesn't look good. Also, I looked at the kernel log and I saw a warning. Something about a time out, I think, and recommended using e2fsck. I'm not sure if that is useful, but there it is. I will post more when I get back. I hope that might help. Thanks!
  11. AH YES SpikeyKlitske! You have reminded me. I did watch the logs during an install and I do remember seeing, towards the beginning of the install, a message about starting a server and then saying it failed. I had completely forgotten about that until you just mentioned it. Thanks! I'm not positive if it was the X Server that failed, but that would make sence and would explain why I got the DOS style GUI. I will review those logs and post them later today when I am by my computer. Also, if necessary, I will try to get some more specifics about my hardware. Assuming that is the problem, what would make it fail? I do have another old PCI video card that I could try, but have no idea who the manufaturer is. Other than that, I have an AGP ATI 7500 video card, but that will do no good because the motherboard doesn't even have an AGP slot.
  12. Sure thing: -I just upgraded to 96 megs ram. 2 DIMM's one 32 meg, not sure of manufacturer, the other 64 meg Viking stick. -Just upgraded to a Quasar 10 gig hard drive from a 3 gig Fuji. -PCI video, the manufacturer is Jastor with Trident chip. The card type was automatically detected during the video setup. -ISA 56k modem that I'm not using and can remove if you think it might be a problem. I remember reading that there is incompatibility issues with Winmodems. -PCI Audio. Don't know manufacturer. -PCI PS/2 mouse card. Not sure of manufacturer -AT motherboard, Pentium with MMX at 200 mhz -PS/2 mouse with AT keyboard -I made the 10 gig hard drive one primary partition on which I installed Windows ME first. After, I installed Mandrake 10.0 telling it to use free space to create another partition for Mandrake. I instructed the installer to keep 5 gig for Windows so that it could use the other 5 gig for itself. There's 2 serial ports. I noticed that one of the ports was disconnected from the motherboard so I reconnected it. I assumed that I accidently unseated it, but perhaps it was supposed to be disconnected. That wouldn't really make sence, but I suppose its possible. It is an old system with turbo switch and all! There is one other thing I want to try that I will post on after doing so. I had burned 3 CD's of CD1. The first one must have been a bad burn because it was all f***ed up. The second one, the one I used for this install, seemed to work except for what I have been posting about. The 3rd CD I burned at a slower speed, but I haven't tried that one yet. I read that if you burn the ISO's at a slow speed, it burns better. I will uninstall the install I have now and try again with that CD and see if I get the same results.
  13. Ok, now I got to the part where you set up the video. I selected the monitor resolution, video card and other settings. I went to test the settings to see if they worked and I got a blue screen with white crosshairs. I could move the crosshairs around with the mouse, but there was no option to continue or next or anything. I hit every key on the keyboard and nothing would get me out of the screen. Finally, I rebooted the computer and after some initialization, I got the login prompt for Mandrake. Can someone tell me what happend?
  14. Yep, I restarted the install several times and always the same thing. It all seems to work eventhough it doesn't look right. I am using an old Penttium 200mhz computer with AT motherboard and PCI video. I thought maybe it defaulted to a low graphics mode because it detected an antiquated video. But, it seems odd that the initial install screen was hi-res and looked fine. So far I told the installer to use the unused space from the Windows partition. I told it to save 5 gigs for Windows and use the other 5 for Mandrake. Everything is workind so far. I'm curious about the install GUI though. And yes, I am booting off CD 1. Thanks!
  15. Its me again! I have a comment and a question. First the question. I booted from the CD and hit "Enter" to install, as I was supposed to. I didn't change any of the install modes. The documentation at mandrake.org walks you throught the install process showing nice dialog boxes with options and other nice GUI things. During my install, I got some DOS looking dialoge boxes that I had to TAB through and hit the space bar to make selections. Also, at some points, like during the partitioning part, I would get off centered lines of text, which looked like they were lines from the logs, and other random text scattered in the screen. The only nice pretty screen I got was the initial splash screen to start the install. Any idea what that was all about? Now the comment. I had a little 3Gig HD. I used half for Widows ME and was going to use the other half for Mandrake. Evidently 1.5 GIG is not enough for Mandrake. Is that correct? Or, did I do something wrong in the install? I tried several different scenarios. Either way, its not that inportant other than for my own knowledge. I replaced it with a 10gig and it is installing as I type. By the way, I just realized my comment has become a question!
  16. Ok, I added 64 megs for 96 total. I was able to see the log and it seems that the istaller was loading itself, or something, into memory. Once I added the memory it worked!
  17. Thanks aRTree! You must have poted your reply the same time I posted my previous one. No, I did not try those options. I will as soon as I get a chance. Unfortunately, I'm not at the computer now. The only thing I changed in the BIOS was turning off PnP OS. I have another question that is related, but a little off topic. I have not worked on an AT moterboard in a long time. It seems that there are 2 slots (bays) for DIMM chips and 4 slots (2 more bays) for SIMM chips. Can I mix the SIMM's and DIMM's? Or, should I stick to just one type? The reason I ask is because I have some other extra memory, but they are SIMM's.
  18. Thanks for the replies. I do have an extra 32 meg chip which will get me to 64 so I will do that when I get a chance. Do you think the low RAM would cause the reboot, or is that just something to maximize performance once I get it running?
  19. Hello, I will try to make this as detailed and clear as possible. The main thing I would like to know is the process of the installation. What is the installation doing at each step because the installation hangs and then my computer reboots at the same point each time? - I am using an old Pentium PC system with an AT motherboard. I'm not sure of the processor speed. It has 32megs RAM, an offbrand PCI video card, 56k PCI modem (not sure what brand), PCI sound card (not sure what brand), PCI PS/2 mouse card and AT keyboard. - It has a 3 gig hard drive. I partioned it to a primary C: and logical D: drive with fdisk. Both partitions are 1.5 gigs and FAT32. The C: partition has Windows ME installed and working well. The D: partition is only formatted with nothing on it, intended for Mandrakelinux 10.0 Official. - I downloaded the 3 iso's from www.mandrake.org and the checksum. All 3 iso's checked out fine with the checksum hash. - I downloaded a free program called CDBurnerXP Pro (http://www.cdburnerxp.se/) to burn the iso's to CD. I would say that perhaps my problem lies here. Maybe this program didn't do a good job, but I also burned a Windows NT iso for another computer right after burning the Mandrake ones. The NT istallation was flawless, so I have ruled that out. - I also created a Mandrake boot disk just in case. On the first boot I used the disk to boot the CD. I got the splash screen and hit "Enter" to install. It did its thing until I got to a black screen with a blue title bar saying Mandrake 10.0 and some other stuff. A small screen came up saying "Detecting USB devices", that went away and was left at the black screen for several minuites. By the way, I don't have any USB devices. Then, the machine automatically rebooted and started the process again. - I went into the BIOS and set it to boot off of the CD first. Same sequence of events. After the "detecting USB" I rebooted. - I burned another copy of the disk 1 iso to see if the disc was bad, but same result. - I burned a 3rd CD at 4x instead of 16x. I read that burning at a slower speed may help, but that didn't work either. - I tried using the vgalo and text installation modes, but that didn't work either. Right now, my guess is that I have some hardware that Mandrake doesn't like. Or, perhaps it doesn't like the partitioning. If I knew what the installation was doing at the time of lock up and reboot, I might be able to figure it out. Granted, I did not try viewing the log at the time of lockup, but I'm not sure if I will even be able since it is locked up. Is there a saved log somewhere that I can go through Windows ME and find and view to see where the problem lies? Sorry this is long winded and I hope I didn't leave anything important out. Thanks for any help! Keith
  20. Ok Fellas! I did it and after doing it, I understand how it works. I guess there is no better way to learn then by trial. Sorry for being a putZ! But, I do have another problem. During the first stage of the install, after the initial scree, it said detecting USB Devices. After that message goes away, I'm left looking at a black screen with the blue bar at the to saying Mandrakelinux 10.0. After a minuite my computer reboots. -The checksum of the download was good, so its not a bad file. -I burned it twice and the same on both, so it's probably not a bad disk. -I have no USB devices thatr might cause a problem. -I tried vgalo and text install and still reboot Anyway, I should go post this in the installation forum and try to find some answers there. Thanks a bunch to you all! I'll mark the thread solved - Artificial Intelligence By the way welcome on the board :)
  21. WOW! You guys are fast!!!! Ok, so I have the file "Mandrakelinux10officialCD1.iso", or whatever the name is, that I downloaded. Now, I simply burn an image of that? I thought an .iso was an image file? How will that make the CD bootable? Sorry I'm a block, but I'm just having a hard time understanding this process.
  22. Hello, I have downloaded the 3 CD .ISO files for Mandrake 10.0. I was having problems and have done some research here to help me out why. I downloaded the 3 ISO's to my Win XP box and used WinRAR to extract the ISO's. After, using the Win XP File Explorer, I copied the extracted files to 3 CD's. Evidently, from reading many posts, this is where I went wrong. I was not supposed to extract the ISO's, I was supposed to burn the ISO's to CD's as image files. Do I understand that correctly? This is not something XP can do supposedly. I need Nero or some other burning software that can do such a thing. I found a link to a free Windows XP burner that someone had used with success, but I have not yet had a chace to try it so I am writing this post to make sure I understand. I am confused as to what an image file is. What does the burning software do to the ISO to burn it to the CD and make it bootable? I'm hoping someone can give me a brief explaination, or point me to some information that can help me understand. Sorry for the ignorance, but this is my first venture into the world of Linux. Before now, I thought WinZIP was all you needed.
