  1. Hi all

I'm using Mandrake 10.0 Official as a Samba server for file sharing and printing on a Windows network. The file sharing works fine and the printing via Samba+Cups worked fine until now. Printing from a WindowsXP client to the Samba server now fails and I don't know why it has suddenly stopped.

There are on no errors logged on the Linux Samba box, the Windows application you try to print from just says "not responding". I have used knoppix as a client and the printing works from samba, so it is just a Windows client to Linux Samba issue, but I can't figure it out.

    Any ideas?

  2. Hi

Thanks. I've already tried a similiar thing, I went straight from lilo to runlevel 3, linux 3, then startx. I'm kind of grabbing at straws with the display manager. I had a similiar fault about 10 months ago, and replacing mdkkdm with kdm fixed in, or it did something invertedly that fixed whatever was wrong. A real puzzle, I have checked all the logs and can not find out why starting X locks up. I'm using nvidia drivers, I swiched to nv same thing. It locks up so fast that no tell tales signs are written to the logs.

I have since done updates and X was updated, but no change, X still won't start and the machine crashes.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

  3. Hi

I downloaded bealge through urpmi on 10.1 Official and now can't start X. It downloaded a stack of depandent packages and I think something broke.

Now my system just locks up when starting X. I can't even SysRq + S + U + B, proper reset required. It seems to happen very fast, nothing in the logs. I think it may be due to the KDM manager, but I am not sure where the config file to change KDM for mdkkdm or vice versa is stored and I can't use Drake to change as it needs X.

Anyone know where the display manager config file is?

    Many thanks

    Rich

  4. I have an Adaptec Duo Connect combination FireWire / USB 2.0 card which seems to be functioning well with Mandrake 10.1 OE, BUT, I have never plugged anything into it more complicated than a mouse and multi-port CF Card reader (Addonics Digidrive) under Linux.

usbview shows both an ehci and ohci host controller.

    Hi

Are the devices you plug in to it USB2? I don't think your mouse will be or need USB2, but does your card reader run at full USB2 speed, 480Mbits/sec? I think usbview should show the transfer speed. Appreciate if you could give it a go and let me know.

    thanks in advance.

    Rich

  5. Hi

I have some problems using usb-storage devices using usb1.1, namely mp3 players. Usb-storage works fine for a USB keyring I have, but just refuses to work with mp3 players. Errors like control timeout on ep0out in /var/logs/messages

I have tried the noapic in lilo with no luck. I am now thinking of getting a PCI card with USB2, but I can not find which ones, if any, are compatible.with MDK 10.1 Official.

Does anyone have any PCI USB2 cards working they can recommend?

    thanks

    Rich

  6. xdm

    mdkkdm

    kdebase-kdm

    gdm

xdm is the basic X one, it's ugly but functional. mdkkdm is Mandrake's customised manager, the default. kdebase-kdm is the stock KDE one. gdm is the GNOME one. Install 'em all and you can switch between them as artee posted (I think it's probably drakboot that lets you pick which to use). You'll probably find one of these is the one you were using before.

I updated kdebase-kdm and I am back using kdm all is working as before. Very bizarre it broke. I'm going to have another look through the logs to see if I can work it out, I'll post back if I find out.

    Thanks everyone for their help.

  7. Probably the mirror isn't having all the packages. Try another (remove 'update' from your 'media', and then update again, you will get a list with mirrors. Choose another)

Tried 5 different mirrors, across different countries, it is not there. Could it be possibly missed? Who should know at Mandrake, seems a bit too much to raise a bug report.

  8. Hi

I am running 10.1 official, I did at the command line urpmi urpmi to update urpmi and I got this,

    $urpmi urpmi

Some package requested cannot be installed:

    urpmi-4.5-29.1.101mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied perl-URPM[*][>= 1.03-2mdk])

Suggests I should install perl-URPM-1.03-2mdk.noarch, but I can't find it anywhere. I have the original perl-URPM from installation, version, perl-URPM-1.03-1mdk

Please could someone with 10.1 official gives this a go (urpmi urpmi) and see if the same error. Or if it does install without an error what version of perl-URPM you are running. The cooker does have a higher version, but I'm trying to avoid using cooker rpm's on this particular pc.

    thanks

    Rich

  9. Hi

Side comment: mdkkdm is mandrakes version of kdm - so no need to install it, it's normally what you've got.

mdkkdm wasn't installed. You're a star for mentioning it earlier, as since I installed it, KDE started, yipeee, thank you. Though the login menu is slightly different, I have to click a user then another screen pops up for the password and session. Before I had one window, with a list of users and images to represent the user on the left and on the right a password box and below that the session. Not sure if I was using kdm before, does my description fit? There is actually an update to kdm on mandrake's 10.1 updates so I might give this a go.

Actually my wife tells me she switched the PC with Mandrake on it yesterday and didn't actually get round to logging in and using it. It was left for about 8 hours without anyone logging in at the GUI and I wonder if it somehow crashed and screwed kdm, pehaps when the monitor went to sleep?

About the logs, if you do

    X :1 &

    (you can leave out the & if you want, the system will likely hang anyway), the logfile that gets created is at /var/log/Xorg.1.log;

you can check (in init 3) for the previous one at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and for the predecessor of that one: Xorg.0.log.old

So you see, there should be enough logfiles to make you happy.

Yeah I was getting these and they were rotating, but nothing obivous. So still no idea how things got like this other than what I say above. I did get a bit paranoid and do a root kit check and ddos check, nothing all fine.

I'll try the kdm update and switch to using that and report back if properly fixed.

    thanks for your help

    Rich

  10. Hi

I used nvidia driver from the installation of Club CE 10.1 and it worked fine until now, I didn't use another driver before. Tried NV driver and same thing.

I have checked the hardware by booting knoppix and the GUI works so I think that rules out a hardware fault.

    Should I have mdkkdm installed?

    Rich

  11. Hi

    Thanks for the reply.

Seems you know your way around, so can you try to use the nv driver instead of the nvidia one?

Just trying to figure out where the problem lies.

Tried the nv driver, exact same thing. I thought I might get to see some logs using the nv driver rather than the splash screen of the nvidia driver, but now just a black screen and crash.

    Also, instead of doing

    telinit 5

can you try, as user (or even root) to do

    X

to start only the X server? (Kill it with ctrl-alt-backspace.)

If you get the cross and the 'blue screen of life' and you can move the pointer with your mouse, the issue is not with X or the nvidia driver - you'd have to look at mdkkdm or so, for the guilty party.

Tried just X enter and it locks up. Does this suggest X is at fault? Tried looking at the logs again, but it seems to lock up so fast nothing appears to be written to give a clue.

You mentioned mdkkdm, I know about KDM, but not sure about mdkkdm. Please could you let me know where this is or should be?

Anything else to try? I thought about uninstalling the Xserver and reinstalling to see if any corrupt config files get reinstalled, good idea?

    Cheers

    Rich

  12. Hi

I have been using Mandrake 10.1 for a while and today all of a sudden it no longer boots in to X and KDE. It just stops at the Nvidia splash screen and locks everything up. Even the magix sysrq will not work, I have to reset?!!

This is a Mandrake 10.1 CE upgraded to Official, but I did this ages ago. No updates were done today or yesterday, when it last worked. It seems to have failed all on its own.

I can start it and boot in to a console, init 3 and I can't find any obivous problems in the logs, though I might be looking in the wrong place. I checked /var/log/messages and Xorg errors. Changing to init 5 locks it up, very frustrating. I have uninstalled the nvidia driver and reinstalled, used XFDrake and it locked up again.

I am using the kernel and nvidia 6111 rpm that came with CE Club Edition.

Appreciate any help, I don't wish to reinstall.

    thanks

    Rich

  13. I get these two lines in my logs every time I boot Mandrake 10.1 Official,

Nov 18 10:53:31 charlie ifup: Failed to open connection to session message bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-We96n

    ZX0GU: Connection refused

Nov 18 10:53:31 charlie ifup: Failed to open connection to session message bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-fbB33

    VB3GS: Connection refused

Looking further in to this, this message occurred after I removed a network connection and set up a new one. Looks like it could be linked to ifplugd, this is no longer running. My network connection does work, just trying to figure this out. How do I start ifplugd at boot time?

    Cheers

  14. Hi

I checked /tmp and these files are not there. The network connection works, but I can't figure what is meant to happen.

Does anyone know? More detail of my networking logs below,

  15. Hi

I have found out it is a problem with libdvdread, the version with 10.1 does not work,

    libdvdread3-0.9.4-3mdk

    libdvdread3-devel-0.9.4-3mdk

but with the older rpm's it does work,

    libdvdread3-devel-0.9.4-2mdk.i586.rpm

    libdvdread3-0.9.4-2mdk

note the 2 on the end of the rpm files.

The header files in the devel rpm's are the same, but the library files in libdvdread3-0.9.4-3mdk have a change that is stopping compiling.

Any thoughts, is this a bug in libdvdread3-0.9.4-3mdk ?

  17. Hi

I have copied across my kmail mail folders from KDE 3.1 to the KDE 3.2.2 Kmail 1.7? that came with Mandrake 10.1 CE. I didn't copy the .Mail folder, I just picked out the folders and emails within .Mail that I wanted and made sure the permissions and owner matched those for the user using (chmod and chown commands). For example I didn't want to keep all of my old inbox, so I copied it and called it old_inbox and then in kmail drag n dropped the one or two emails from old_inbox I wanted to keep to the new inbox, then deleted my old_inbox. Ditto for other folders, like sent.

  18. Hi

I notice the hard disk light flashes every minute or so, is it normal for the hard disk to have activity every minute even though the PC is on and just setting there, not being used?

I've checked the logs, nothing there and there is no swap activity.

Is this usual behaviour? I have two machines, different hardware, one running Mandrake 10.0 CE and one running 10.1 CE and both do it. But I don't know why.

    Thanks

    Rich
