Did you set up the router to give the Linux box a static ip?
when setting up my dlink router i used the router to give my main box a static ip -- it assigsn the static ip for my eth0 cards MAC address --- just checking to see if this was what you did
I guess my dlink router does not have this capability. In the dlink router, I can assign a range of addresses that are to be used for DHCP (I chose 192.168.1.100 -> 192.168.1.255) and I assign static addresses below 192.168.1.100 to each device manually (on the device itself.)
In Linux, you have to actually assign the static address to the box by mcc or manually editing /etc/hosts etc.

I do have cups installed.
When I used mcc to install a printer, I thought it probed the USB ports for you. I'll try doing it manually as you suggest when I get home tonight.

Hey I really appreciate your help. I am not sure what (if any) firewalls I have running. I have gone to the firewall page of mcc and there is nothing turned on there. Is there anywhere else I should go/check?

There is something more fundamentally wrong than the HP drivers... My USB did not discover this printer and does not know when I connect/disconnect it from the USB port.

I'll try these out later - right now I am chasing network problems (see my thread on "ethernet hw recognized but can't connect") As soon as this is resolved I'll chase the sound issue.
Of course this could be a moot point if go the windoze server route.
I can't spend this kind of time on this project. If it was just the sound issue, it wouldn't matter - I could take as long as I need. But I have all of my family's documents (kids reports, company book-keeping, photographs, etc.) on this machine as well as the printers (laser and color) and I am being pestered every day to get it all on-line again (I had Mandrake for years until the motherboard blew up.)

This is a real pain
The first thing I tried to do was to ping the computer (192.168.1.2) from itself. That works fine. I then tried pinging the router (192.168.1.1) from the computer and got no reply.
I have also tried pinging the computer from a windoze box with no reply.
I only have one ethernet adapter (eth0 built into the motherboard) on this machine. I have tried disabling this and installing a known adapter board and got exactly the same results - Mandrake discovered the board correctly, but could only ping itself.

This is a real show-stopper. No network no server!
I have spent way too many sleepless nites working on this. I am at my wits end and about to chuck it all and install (ugh) Windows 2000 server. Even at $1000 and reduced capabilities, it is cheaper than the amount of time I have spent on this!!!

When you say you manually added the printer you mean you used the MCC to set it up or did you use cups or KDE, or did you edit some files?

WHen I ran MCC/printers, there were none listed and it did not find one on the USB.
I used MCC and added the printer I wanted (via "Manual configuration.") It was not discovered by the system. I had to select USB 0 for connection.
I checked under /dev/usb and the only enry is hid and it is empty.

I finally got around to plugging in my speakers and was shocked that I actually had some sound!!!!
I have on-board audio and it plays very slowly and choppy.
Any suggestions?

Hi there,
I have on-board usb ports that seem to be recognized by Mandrake 10.0 (I can see it via harddrake.)
I don't remember the file, but there was a post that suggested tailing a log file to see if plugging/unplugging a usb device is recorded - I tried this and it was not.
I manually set up the printer (an HP882C Deskjet that is in the supported printer list) but nothing prints.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

I had a motherboard fail on an old (4 years) version of Mandrake and am trying to get install a new version on a new motherboard. Unfortunately all of my family's data is on the disks and I need to get the system up and running before my kids kill me and mywife leaves me!!!

Maybe I'm so dull my posting priviledges should be revoked, but unless I'm missing something, looks to me like you've given the router a static IP. Yet you say you've configured Mandrake to look for a dynamic one provided by DHCP. If so. trash DHCP (what you need it for?), tell Mandrake to look for the router's static 192.168.1.1 address and things should go...
LOL - I am sure you don't need your posting privileges revoked!! I am probably not explaining my network properly :P
I have assigned 192.168.1.2 (static) to mandrake
The router is assigned 192.168.1.1 (static)
I mentioned DHCP as I tried it at one time in my frustration(!) and that is when I saw it appear in my router's MAC list. I really want to use a static address for mandrake. The files and outputs I listed are all (or should be!) with static IP addresses.

Could it be that your route shows 192.168.1.0 as your router? You have it listed in your resolv.conf as 192.168.1.1. You may want to check that out. It seems as though everything else is in order, although I'm not a networking guru.
My router's IP address is 192.168.1.1. I think the domain(??) mask(??) is 192.168.1.0. Not sure of the terminology here...

Sorry, maybe I don't understand the question - you don't set up the router to give out static IP addresses, you set the box up to have a static IP address.

I have looked at other threads relating to this issue and have tried their suggestions there, but to no avail
I am trying to configure the on-board NIC with a static IP address. I can ping myself, but not my Linksys router.

I cannot even ping my router (192.168.1.1.)
I have the same computer as a DNS because I want it to provide DNS service for the local machines on my 192.168.1.x network.
I am pretty sure that the router provdes DNS (I can't remember right now) - if not, I can add Road Runner's DNS servers.
An interesting note, as Mandrake starts/restarts eth0, (and I have configured it to use DHCP) I can see it's MAC address appear in my router's list of clients. After it is up, the MAC address dissapears from the list
This tells me that it is at least recognizing and attempting to use the NIC.[moved from Hardware by spinynorman]

I completely gave up on Mandrake :-( I had it for years and loved it, but a new install did not recognise my HP printer on a usb port, could not get my ethernet working, etc.) I went to Redhat Fedora core 2 and everything worked out of the box. Unfortunately, redhad does not have anywhere near the software built in that Mandrake has, so I had to go find it...
