  1. Greetings, I just built a screeming new computer (all for linux 9.1) and had a hard time getting the permissions on my cd drives to work (cdrom, cdrw). Now that Ive messed with it, I can't seem to unmount my drives because they're 'busy' Here whats left of my fstab, Any hints what to erase? /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdd,fs=auto,ro,--,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,umask=0 0 0 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 user, noauto, defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/windows vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hdc1 /storage ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom auto user, owner, exec, dev, suid,rw,noauto 1 1 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2 auto exec, dev, suid,rw 1 1 Any hints would be really cool. This is making me crazy! Ken PS My new computer rocks! Only had to install one set of drivers for motherboard and video, and its rolling.
  2. greetings, I'm making a trip to the parts store this weekend, with the intention of buying a barebones, or the parts for the equivalent. Right now I have a celeron 667 on a Panacer board (it was cheap), with 192 megs of generic pc 133. I'll have about 400 bucks US, and am mainly concerned with case, board, memory and chip. What I'd like to know is what works best with mandrake (9.0, 9.1) I'd like to go as fast as possible without running out of stability. Ive heard Asus boards are the most stable, but a little spendy. What are you using? Ken
  3. ok, I give up. I reinstalled. This seems to have ficed the problem! Thanks for the try ken
  4. Does anyone think this could be solved b re-installing KDE? How in the heck would I begin to reinstall kde in mdk 9.0? Any hints? Ive tried mandrake update, and some of the 19 necessary packaged wont download. Is there another way?
  5. It seems to happen in all user areas, as well as the login deal for mandrake. It does not happen to gtk apps. So the system is working fine, just graphically crazy. Do you know what QWidget is? Can it be configured. It seems that when the apps start, qwidget calls them to be in the largest possible mode. I'm sure that this is the problem that all of them are having. How the @#$@#$@ do I adjust that? On a side note: I see this thread as a personal accomplishment for me. Ive been using Mandrake (no windoz) for almost three years, but have robbed myself of the chance to learn very much by simply reinstalling everytime there is a sign of trouble. I'd really like to find a solution
  6. Do you know what the file is that I should update? Is there a config script anywhere for the kde widget? ken
  7. Alright, I'll try to reinstall qt. This may have been the issue (bad qt install) when I did the urpmi for d4x. We'll see. Arrrrgggghhhh.
  8. OK, I uninstalled the d4x rpm, but the k-windowz are still huge. I experimented by trying to run a few apps in a shell. Each time, getting (kwrite example) I get this: Loading required GL library /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 QWidget::setMaximumSize: (unnamed/KStatusBarLabel) The largest allowed size is ( 32767,32767) what is this QWidget and how do I make it pay for its insulence? Help! ken
  9. Ok, I was installing web downloader nt, and was using urpmi, and the rpmfind database. the program installed great! But now, ANY widget associated with kde (kwrite, konquerer, even the login prompt for mandrake) is out of wak. It tries to make them 12 feet long, and they look real disorganized. I can still log in and everything, the system is running fine ( I love linux) but what the heck? Where do I begin to fix this? Your desperate and confused pal, Ken
  10. That did it right away! I can't thank you enough. I bow to you, oh Linux/gnu master! I only hope I can answer someone elses questions eventually Ken
  11. greeting all! Lately I havent been able to run xmms (where it used to run just great) I tried to run it in a shell to watch it choke, and I got segmentation fault when I run it as root it seems to work. Also, when I tried [root@localhost log]# grep -ir 'xmms' * | more rpmpkgs:libxmms1-1.2.7-13mdk.i586.rpm rpmpkgs:xmms-1.2.7-13mdk.i586.rpm rpmpkgs:xmms-arts-0.4-8mdk.i586.rpm rpmpkgs:xmms-esd-1.2.7-13mdk.i586.rpm rpmpkgs:xmms-kjofol-skins-1.2.0-5mdk.i586.rpm rpmpkgs:xmms-mesa-1.2.7-13mdk.i586.rpm rpmpkgs:xmms-mikmod-1.2.7-13mdk.i586.rpm rpmpkgs:xmms-more-vis-plugins-1.6.0-2mdk.i586.rpm rpmpkgs:xmms-skins-1.0.0-13mdk.noarch.rpm rpmpkgs:xmms-smpeg-0.3.4-7mdk.i586.rpm security/rpm-qa.yesterday:libxmms1-1.2.7-13mdk 1053716243 security/rpm-qa.yesterday:xmms-1.2.7-13mdk 1053716510 security/rpm-qa.yesterday:xmms-arts-0.4-8mdk 1053717557 security/rpm-qa.yesterday:xmms-esd-1.2.7-13mdk 1053717563 security/rpm-qa.yesterday:xmms-kjofol-skins-1.2.0-5mdk 1053717563 security/rpm-qa.yesterday:xmms-mesa-1.2.7-13mdk 1053717555 security/rpm-qa.yesterday:xmms-mikmod-1.2.7-13mdk 1053717555 security/rpm-qa.yesterday:xmms-more-vis-plugins-1.6.0-2mdk 1053717559 security/rpm-qa.yesterday:xmms-skins-1.0.0-13mdk 1053717597 security/rpm-qa.yesterday:xmms-smpeg-0.3.4-7mdk 1053717573 security/rpm-qa.today:libxmms1-1.2.7-13mdk 1053716243 security/rpm-qa.today:xmms-1.2.7-13mdk 1053716510 security/rpm-qa.today:xmms-arts-0.4-8mdk 1053717557 security/rpm-qa.today:xmms-esd-1.2.7-13mdk 1053717563 security/rpm-qa.today:xmms-kjofol-skins-1.2.0-5mdk 1053717563 security/rpm-qa.today:xmms-mesa-1.2.7-13mdk 1053717555 security/rpm-qa.today:xmms-mikmod-1.2.7-13mdk 1053717555 security/rpm-qa.today:xmms-more-vis-plugins-1.6.0-2mdk 1053717559 security/rpm-qa.today:xmms-skins-1.0.0-13mdk 1053717597 security/rpm-qa.today:xmms-smpeg-0.3.4-7mdk 1053717573 and so on.... I know this must be a permissions issue, but where do I begin to change this? I keep trying whereis to locate the different pieces, and can't seem to find them. Any hints?
  12. Hello, as usual I am writing needing help from all you wonderful Mandrake experts! I work in a store that has 4 computers on a single linksys router, connected to the internet with a cable modem. The software fire wall for the linksys router has been enabled. I have loaded mdk9.0 on one of the terminals, and am attempting to set up a simple http server. Problem! The linksys is asking for a password on a big red screen when I try to connect to the apache machine IP address over the internet. How can i get this happening? I have never dealt with a router firewall, and have no idea where to begin letting this one machine have permissions that the other 3 windoze machines dont have. Any hints? Suggestions? Of course, as usual, any help will get you a fine cuban cigar, my children, and some of the cars from around the neihborhood. PS The reason I am attempting this is to bring Linux/GNU to the world of my small town. I work at a radio shack, and sell msn broadband. The demo computer out front (for customers to demo the internet on) I have converted to a linux box. It runs so smooth and strong, and I have great authority to limit the ability for users to download, change settings, or see any of the rest of the computer. I have it set with blackbox, and a menu with only netscape. So far, all the customers like its speed, and ease of use. Also I have gotten many comments about it's stability. The only thing I cant do is get the web server past the firewall. ARRRGGGHHH! Cheers ken
  13. Greetings earthlings, I recently tried experimenting with a higher security level to run my box as a simple server (virtual host land), and now I cant print. When I sign in as root, and change the security level back to standard or just high, I can print, but when I put it back to higher I cant. Any hints? What do I configure to be able to print all the time? Hints? Suggestions? Any help will get you my first born, and my cat, and maybe some of cars from around the neighborhood. Cheers
  14. I got it! I had to look in webmin under default directory directives. I wonder why those didn't match the apache defaults in linuxconf :x Thanks take care
  15. Greetings, Ive got my apache up and running strong, and my config scripts seem to be in order (chost, httpd, conf, etc). I can't seem to get apache to list the contents of a directory; it only searches for index.html. I have adjusted everything I can think of in linuxconf, and in the vhost conf (indexes option). Still I am forbidden. What am I missing? Is this enough information to be helpful? Please any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!! Also, any helpful suggestions will get you my first born, and perhaps a half a tin of dry coffee. Cheers 8)
  16. Howdy, Howdy Im trying to get a few avi files I downloaded through pan to glue together. I remember that in windows there wa a free program called pecks power join that did this, but I'm dam determined to do this with the mighty Mandrake! I have tried to open files with the broadcast program, but they wont even happen that way. I know that I have the codec, because xine works fine. Any hints? Is this just a copy/past thing? What am I missing here? As usual, any help will earn you my first born, my cat, and the roach I have sitting in the ashtray. Thanks ken
  17. Howdy, Thanks for taking the time. Ive got apache up and running smoothly, and want to figure out how to access my web areas from external computers using ftp. Ive installed the rpm for wu-ftp, and then poked around looking for the default directory. I can't seem to find it! Is there a front end for configuration with this program, if not is there an ftp server that has a good front end config? I'm not real smooth on command line, and would like something that makes a little more sense. Since wu-ftp is installed, should I be seeing it in webmin? Many questions, so few documentations! Help!! As always, I'll will you my first born if you can help. Ken
