  1. Thanks very much for that. Just made an account and waiting to post the bug. I see that you are using 10.0. I've just read a few other posts about 10.1. Is it true that 10.0 is somewhat less buggy?
  2. Thanks for your efforts, Devries. I'm going to see if my local LUG can help, otherwise, I'll stick with .0 until 10.2 Official is released. Whilst I'm quite keen on Linux being my major OS - and it is slowly taking over - I don't really want to spend a lot of time playing de-bugging with a beta version (don't have the skills or time) and so will await the Official release. 10.0 works very well, but I'd like to have a Wacom tablet working on it (unless I can get my Aiptek clone going), which is the main reason I thought I'd upgrade to 10.1. Poor, poor, pitiful me :) PS Would you know where I may be able to post it as a possible bug?
  3. Thanks again. lsmod | grep scanner gives no response. I tried modprobe -r scanner (anyway) I went to the blaclist and added scanner I've made sure that it's the same firmware I've added under Man 10.0 (and it is). I've even gone so far as to creat a new directory for it /usr/local/lib/sane/firmware/ and then cp'd the firmware file u96v121.bin It is exactly the same as it is on my Man 10.0 machine... and still I get the damn thing trying to overrun the scanning area. It still seems to think the area is larger than it is. I've even tried the firmware for the other forms scanners listed on the original manufacturers disc - no go either. When I plug the scanner into the Man 10.0 box, it's fine. Bugger me! (translation for the non-Australian residents: "Oh no, I'm having some trouble and am feeling somewhat disconcerted :)) Should I just reload Man 10.1 and avoid hotpluggin and the box trying to configure the scanner itself? I've loaded Man 10.1 on a spare HDD as I didn't want to load it on my main machine until I'd made sure everything worked - am I glad I did this). (Short expression of frustration following: "what the ... I would have thought that .1 would have managed this better than .0") Devries, thanks for your help so far. This was supposed to be my birthday present to myself! 28/1/05 - new O/S. Mandrake 10.1... :( I hope you have some more idea
  4. I've had a look at the SANE site. I have a feeling that Mandrake 10.1 is trying load a module for the scanner that is 'almost right' but not quite. I have disabled Hotplugging, but I think the problem still exists that it is loading a module that is 'almost, but not quite...' SANE states: http://snapscan.sourceforge.net/ I'm not sure where the hotlug config manager is (other than disabling it through MCC). Am I right in thinking that there is another 'self-loading' element here? When I initially installed 10.1, it read the scanner immediately; but it was not exactly the right scanner model and I've had this problem with it trying to 'over-run' the scan area since - despite uploading the firmware for the scanner that works perfectly in 10.0. Any assistance most gratefully appreciated.
  5. Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I can't find anything on the download site that looks like what you are describing. Do you mean: linuxwacom-0.6.6.tar.bz2 - 2004-12-01 Build .ko locally and support kernel 2.6.10. ???
  6. Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa. I shouldn't write anything late at night. I meant to say that my scanner is a DV648U - not the 640 clone. AND If I plug this back into my 10.0 machine, it works perfectly.... hmmmm. The snapscan site lists a driver for the version of this scanner that has a translucency option (for scanning negatives) - my scanner doesn't. The machine seems to think that there is further to go - as if it thinks the scanning area is slightly bigger that it is - this with the firmware that I had loaded in 10.0 that works so well... damn. The thing is, it's scanning well apart from this!
  7. Thanks for the advice. I had read this when I was installing the same scanner in Mand 10.0, but it's always good to be reminded :) Good luck with getting your's going.
  8. Thanks for that. I'll have a look at it and post a reply. Do I need to remove the existing module/driver, or will this write over the top? I guess disabling hotplugging would probably help too??
  9. Hi, Have just installed Mandrake 10.1. It sees my Intuos2 Wacom USB Graphics Tablet, but nothing happens. The pen doesn't activate the mouse. I've been told that Wacom's Graphire3 works 'out-of-the-box' (no, don't tell me to go and buy one of those :)) Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any assistance/redirection. Regards.
  10. Hi there, I have a Diamond View Scanner that is a clone of an Acer Flatbed Scanner 13. It worked fine under 10.0 (I added it manually, putting in the firmware driver). I've just installed 10.1 and it saw the scanner automatically - as a Benq (previously Acer 640U). I didn't install it under MCC last time (as I was VERY new to Linux and Mandrake and didn't know I could) :woops: Now, after installing 10.1, it automatically found the scanner. When I conducted a preview scan of a picture (using both Kooka and Xsane) it seemed to work fine, then at the end of the scan, I got this loud, mechanical, clicking noise (like a ratchet working overtime). I know this is NOT GOOD. I'm perplexed because I didn't have this problem before!! So, I went back to MCC, added the same firmware driver that I had used manually installed in Man 10.1 and... no difference! Anyone with any ideas? Should I delete the scanner - how do I do that? - and reload/reconfigure it manually? This is very disconcerting and disappointing. Thanks for any assistance/redirection provided. Regards.
  11. Hi Anna, Great project idea. This sounds just like the sort of thing I've been looking for, and was thinking about how would I go about creating it if I couldn't find one. To be honest, I didn't expect I would be able to and so am glad someone with more nouse has done it. It sounds quite impressive. I'll post a reply after downloading and running it.
  12. Hi adamw, Sorry for the delay in responding. Thanks for the suggestion. You were quite right about the key. Re. the security issues: I might mail clamav or post on their site too (should have thought about that the first time - don't know why I didn't ) I'd find it odd that they didn't suggest something like this in their 'destructions' if this was so necessary. Marked the thread Solved - Artificial Intelligence
  13. Hi, I'm not quite sure what is causing these problems. Here is what has happened so far: Mandrake 10 Official, Kernel: 2.6.3-19mdk Only installed new kernel within the last 7 days. I have not had any other problems so far. I have no odd configurations of anything. Pretty much vanilla. These are the sites I entered using easy urpmi today: urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandrake/10.0 with hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia --update updates http://www.sunsite.org.uk/package/mandrake...dates/10.0/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Li...6/Mandrake/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/Mandrak....0/contrib/i586 with ../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist2.cz urpmi.addmedia jpackage ftp://ftp.ciril.fr/pub/linux/mandrakelinu...b/jpackage/i586 with ../../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist3.cz urpmi.addmedia club ftp://ftp.ens-cachan.fr/mirror/Mandrake/d...ndrakeclub/10.0 with hdlist.cz Then when I tried to install clamav, today: # urpmi clamav To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be installed (3 MB): clamav-0.80-1mdk.i586 clamav-db-0.80-1mdk.i586 Is this OK? (Y/n) y The following packages have bad signatures: /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/clamav-0.80-1mdk.i586.rpm: Invalid signature ((SHA1) DSA sha1 md5 (GPG) (MISSING KEY) GPG#26752624 NOT OK) /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/clamav-db-0.80-1mdk.i586.rpm: Invalid signature ((SHA1) DSA sha1 md5 (GPG) (MISSING KEY) GPG#26752624 NOT OK) Do you want to continue installation ? (y/N) n I tried to install separately install using MCC package installer. I identified: Name: libclamav1 Version: 0.80-1mdk AND Name: libclamav1-devel Version: 0.80-1mdk It downloaded them for installation and then I got a message saying that they have invalid signatures. I retried with these: urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/plf/mandrake/10.0 with hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia --update updates ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/pub/linux/Mandrakel...dates/10.0/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia main ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/Mandrak...6/Mandrake/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://ftp.linux.cz/pub/linux/mandrakelinu....0/contrib/i586 with ../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist2.cz urpmi.addmedia jpackage ftp://ftp.cise.ufl.edu/pub/mirrors/mandra...b/jpackage/i586 with ../../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist3.cz urpmi.addmedia club ftp://ftp.sunsite.org.uk/package/mandrake...ndrakeclub/10.0 with hdlist.cz and got: The following packages have bad signatures: /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/clamav-0.80-1mdk.i586.rpm: Invalid signature ((SHA1) DSA sha1 md5 (GPG) (MISSING KEY) GPG#26752624 NOT OK) /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/clamav-db-0.80-1mdk.i586.rpm: Invalid signature ((SHA1) DSA sha1 md5 (GPG) (MISSING KEY) GPG#26752624 NOT OK) /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/libclamav1-0.80-1mdk.i586.rpm: Invalid signature ((SHA1) DSA sha1 md5 (GPG) (MISSING KEY) GPG#26752624 NOT OK) Do you want to continue installation ? Can anyone offer any advice/ideas? Many thanks and Happy New Year.
  14. Oooh, well... I finally did it. As may have been obvious, I was somewhat concerned. It was damn easy :) everything seems to be working as well as it did before - which brings me to a question that will only expose my ignorance: What is is that the new kernel is improving - or is there somewhere else that I can find this written in laypersons terms? Thanks to everyone for their help and assistance. Regards, Patrick For the Australians on the forum (sung to a popular commercial for an electrical outlet, based itself on a Monty Python song): "I like Linux, I like Linux, They aim so very much to please"
  15. Chris, As usual: clear, specific and very helpful. I appreciate your input enormously and will certainly provide an update as to my success (!). Patrick
  16. Firstly, to everyone: thanks for you advice and assistance. Now, I've been putting this off, but "I'm going to do it". I realise that for those who have done a kernel upgrade this may not seem much, but with all the effort I've gone to configuring my machine to be just as I like it (and it's the first Linux box I've owned/configured/used), I'm a little anxious about this  The newest version showing for me is: 2.6.3.19 mdk-1-1mdk Now one says kernel-smp-2.6.3.19 mdk-1-1mdk the other kernel-secure-2.6.3.19 mdk-1-1mdk What is the difference and which should I install? Again, as per usual, I'm most appreciative of everyone's time and assistance. Patrick
  17. Thanks for that. I'm going to see how I go about a kernel upgrade first - having never done it! Once I'm less financially 'dissolute' LOL, I'll be looking at buying one of the Mandrake packages; my 'free' one is working very well, but I'd like to contribute financially, to a small degree, to a project I admire (as I said, when I'm MORE financially able to :) I responded also to your other post - thanks for providing all the information you have. Most appreciated.
  18. Thanks to all for the advice and assistance. I have just one other question. When you say, 'update sources', I'm not quite sure what you mean or how I go about that. Again, thanks.
  19. Urm, Sorry for being a bit slow, but I couldn't find any Kernel update (or anything with 'kernel' in the title) in MCC?? Am I looking for the wrong thing/name/title?? I am JUST leaving for my holiday (in an hour!) and I looked in here... :)) Thanks for the rapid responses. I'll check in again when I get back.
  20. Hi there, Mandrake 10.0 Official No changes to kernel 2.6.3-7mdk I've been having trouble with installing a Wacom Intuos 2 graphic tablet and an Aiptek graphic tablet - this is the subject of another post. Some reading suggesting updating to kernel 2.6.16 ??? if I've got this right. I've installed urpmi as described at easy urpmi, but I'm just not sure what the consequences will be. How does a kernel upgrade work? What are the possible consequences - what would I need to reconfigure (eg. Firefox?), anything? Any (simple) explanation would be most appreciated. I'm very new to all this and somewhat concerned about breaking my pc. It's not the only one I have, but I use them for practical purposes - they are toys and things to bugger around with second :) Thanks for any assistance/information provided. 21. Hi there, Apologies to all for the long post - just want to give as much info as possible. OS: Mandrake 10 Official. Kernel 2.6.3? Nothing unusual -wouldn't know how :) PC Specs: PIII 192MB RAM Problem: The problem I pose below is truly the only thing causing me to not swap to Linux completely: my printers both worked out of the box - HPDeskJet 640c and Photosmart 130; my scanner required a bit of fiddling; Camera (Sony Cybershot P8) - first time, which gave me a shock - required fiddling with under the other OS; cheap digital camera for my daughter worked too! I have Codeweavers CrossOver because I can't stand the Linux pdf reader - my wife and I have to read quite a lot of them and the pdf readers I've found are just not good enough for reading long pdfs; OpenOffice is great; I own Photoshop and whilst GIMP is good... I'm a PS man. That said, if I didn't have PS and saw GIMP, I wouldn't have bought buy PS. So, being reasonably new to Linux... I have an Aiptek Graphic Tablet that worked, to a degree, as soon as I plugged it in (it's supposed to be a Hyperpen 8000U clone). USB Tablet Series Version 1.04 Manufacturer: AIPTEK International Inc. Speed: 1.5Mb/s (low) USB Version: 1.10 Device Class: 00(>ifc ) Device Subclass: 00 Device Protocol: 00 Maximum Default Endpoint Size: 8 Number of Configurations: 1 Vendor Id: 08ca Product Id: 0010 Revision Number: 1.03 Everything is fine, EXCEPT, when I try to use it, moving it two inches means the cursor covers the whole screen - the usable area of the pad is then only a rectangle of about an inch high by two inches across - not very practical. I cannot find a solution to this this. It's quite sad as it works otherwise! Wacom Intuos 2 I've since borrowed a friends Wacom Intuos 2 and, turning off USBMOUSE (which I don't have) has given me a similar problem - I can now use 70% of the surface of the pad. Whilst this is more practical, it is still not particularly good. It is working better than the Aiptek tablet: the computer sees an area of the pad (approx 70%) and moves the cursor to the related part of the screen. In other words, it thinks my pad is about 30% smaller than it is. I have read through the Wacom driver site, but cannot understand some parts of it (downloading Kernel RPMs, for instance, and then loading them 'somewhere' - do I just do this alone???). It seems that my pc just needs to know that that table surface area is bigger (in both cases). I have tried to configure XF86Config-4 below are the details: ***************************************************************** # File generated by XFdrake. # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "Files" # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts. Do I Modprobe Wacom to resolve this? 2. Can someone suggest XFConfig changes to fix this? 3. Should I upgrade to the newest Kernel - I had heard that Wacom was 'broken' in 2.6.3 I realise I need a bit of handholding and will seriously need some step by step stuff on this as I'm very  but I really love the Penguin - and there's heaps of projects I want to play with. I just can't go back to using a mouse for graphic work!!! It's just this has become a real pain. Just in case someone can help, I will be on holidays for two week from tomorrow and without net connection, or even a computer - my laptop has been told it has to stay at home :( and so if anyone can make any suggestions (thank you, thank you), I'll get on to them as soon as I get back home. Any assistance with this would be most appreciated. Thanks to all.
  22. Hi, I have Man 10 Official (standard, nothing strange). I have a Dolphin Graphic tablet and pen. USB Tablet Series Version 1.04 Manufacturer: AIPTEK International Inc. Speed: 1.5Mb/s (low) USB Version: 1.10 Device Class: 00(>ifc ) Device Subclass: 00 Device Protocol: 00 Maximum Default Endpoint Size: 8 Number of Configurations: 1 Vendor Id: 08ca Product Id: 0010 Revision Number: 1.03 According to my reading, it is supposed to be a clone of the Hyperpen 8000U OR 12000U (originally thought it was a 600U) http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=745 The pen, when plugged in can be seen by Mandrake 10 Official (as above). Everything works, pressure, buttons on pen (there are no buttons on the tablet) etc... except: By scribing an area roughly an inch down and two across, the cursor covers the whole screen. The tablet it obviously much bigger - 150mm across by 115mm down. Now, I've tried a number of suggestions I've found on-line - the latest being: http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread....ighlight=aiptek (It's a little long and didn't want to paste it in) I've changed the baud rate in the suggestion to a slower speed and found that it makes no difference. X starts (I've crashed it that frequently that I can now replace the XF86Config-4 file in my sleep) okay with the changes suggested on the site above - but nothing is changed. I suspect (!) that the pen is NOT even reading what I've put in (pardon my expression, but I don't really know WHAT should be reading the configuring I've been doing :)) So... I'm now back to square one. I haven't buggered it up, I still have my original XF86Config-4 file and I still have my Mandrake box going and, barely, my self respect. Something, somewhere in this machine is connecting and running the tablet, but WHAT? I think if I can find THAT, I can reconfigure it to work better... but... where? Any and all suggestions most gratefully appreciated. 16/12/04 One of the people in my local user group is working on this. He thinks he's got some solutions, so when he finishes, I'll post them for anyone else who had experienced related difficulties.
  23. Hi there, Did you manage to get it working? I've got a Dolphin which shows as an AIPTEK. It worked from plug-in but I cannot set the parameters for the tablet - pen runs off the screen. I'll post another query and maybe between us we'll be able to work it out. I'm happy to swap any info I get from my local user group.
