  1. and roll in the next version of mplayer has. mplayer is now 0.90. head to you local plf or start thee compilers. new plugin .7 is available too. achiesteel i have developed same prob too. i've given up on trying to fix it cause it really isn't that big of a deal for me.

  2. Why can't someone correctly decode the .doc format and implement it into a app for linux?

and decoding doesn't seem to be the problem (at least open office can read .doc files just fine), encoding is. It's hard cause microsoft try to do their damndest to change their format around do only their software (and by same token, their OS) gets used.

  3. i see no point for this. first of all as far as i know crossover plugin doesn't even work with 9.1 because of glibc reasons and secondly crossover plugin isn't free. If you're talking about using it with that annoying banner that pops up every ten seconds that not a better alternative either.

Let's now combine that with the fact that wine apps are every bit as stable as their windows counterparts and we haev yet another vote over crossover. The fact that quicktime works way better now than it ever did on windows (for me) is even more reason to use mplayer and NOT crossover.

The fact that all this is now in rpm format now makes kramset's argues invalid (which is why i posted this, you out there still kramset :)) and your comments unneccesary. the mplayer plugin is miles ahead of crossover's AND it free. Didn't mean for this to sound like an attack on you but i'm just trying to discourage anyone out there who'd be incline to use substandard software when something better is being offered. That only leads to more of kramset's linux isn't ready for the desktop arguments and ... well i'll end my rant now.

  4. doin some brainstorming and came up with an ad hoc solution to my sound problems. Since it gets better with cpu usage i decided to use more cpu power so i compiled slicker with

    make && make && make

and it work. Sound came back to normal! it is rather counterproductive as since you're making the cpu work harder it's going to raise the temp :) ok back to thinking up a better fix ...

  5. open the box, look inside

    what does " dmesg|grep -i pci " display?

well like i said i'm not near the box and won't be for a while but when i get the chance i'll do those commands. The pc is pretty old (4 years) has a 350 mhz processor but the network card came with cable service that was recently acquired (a year-ish) so i'd think that it's a pci card as well.

  6. well cd 3 wins by popular demand. actually since i voted for it once, not really :)

Anyway back to cooling. I tried the hint for this sis 735 found here http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=6...0922689824667db

and just like last time sounds messed up and my mouse takes an immediate responsivity hit (doesn't move as smoothly as before). But my temp did go down by a whole degree celsius

I guess I'M REALLY LUCKY, I got a huge decrease in cpu temp and I have no problem at all with sound. Weird.

    MOttS

Well a lot of other people have had success if the mobo is listed and the sound is some which happens to older athlon cpus not athlon xp's. You more lucky your mobo is listed and you not using < athlon xp cpu

oh yeah i forgot to mention, the sound gets better as cpu usage gets higher. for anyone feeling lucky or looking for a good tyme  these are the commands

    setpci -s 0:0.0 6A=0x19

    enable weirdness

    setpci -s 0:0.0 6A=0x18

    disable weirdness

  7. i miss that blue bastard. good ol' bsod.

Well i owe you 3 mdk isos you were right :)having said that my next mobo will be via via. No more of this cheap (insert approriate expletive here)

and are you stalking me? you seem to pop up right after i post

i saw a thread, got it from the pclo version of this tut, on the gentoo forums and someone with a k7s5a was messing around and thought they had something. i tried the values but i didn't notice any dramatic temp drop but i did get the annoying noise problem when playing music.

  8. a bit of a warning, unless you're absolutely positive you have one of the mentioned chipsets, don't try this!  i thought i did, typed in the command, hit enter, and CLUNK system locked up.  ah well, next time i'll double check and make sure i have the chipset i thought i had :-)

 You have the exact same mobo as i do. dare i try  dare i be adventurous  yeah, i dare

  9. I'm trying to convert someone's pc to linux and i've tried mdk 9.0 and 9.1 and had the same problems with both. The problem is that i'm trying to get a ne2000 network card to work but i can't. It isn't autodetected by mdk 9.0 or 9.1 and I've tried both the pci and isa drivers for it. The message that i keep on getting from the network tool is the the driver cannot be loaded.

Any suggestions. I have googled and know how crappy this card is but no suggestions on just buying a new network card. It's just not going to happen.

  10. I have compiled KDE (from original source) on other platforms (SuSE) and the default permissions of ~/.kde are always 700. Its mandrake which seems to do things differently.

i didn't say that this was the kde default i said that i thought it was a feature. I know for one that suse puts the permissions so that it's unreadable by others. I also know that debian has a nice feature (which would make everyone here happy) to make the home directory world readable or private at install time.

Also, there are lots of imporant and private stuff in ~/.kde like:

    - SSL certificates obtained during accessing secure sites (say, for banking and credit card purchases)

    - cookies that allow automatic login

    - stored passwords

    - your personal bookmarks

    - history of websites visited

    - files downloaded (thru KDE) using http/ftp

Only spywares need "features" like this. Obviously, you could argue that some files (in .kde ) may be more open that others. But that will require a lot of book-keeping which can be avoided by a simple 700 mode for .kde.

bookmarks, history of websites, and cookies aren't things i consider to be private (although i see how this could be :D ) and the passwords are encrypted (not just in a file anyone can read like, say, what gaim does) But i see how this could be a problem. I used to be paranoid about all this stuff when i ran windows. Since moving to the light however i've had more trust in my OS provider. For people who actually have more than one person using a computer, it does pose a potential problem.

And I do not know how many users would like others to see their SSL certificates and information about their credit card purchases.

And the ~/.kde permissions look quite ironic since even in the lowest security level (standard), I can't view a system file like /var/log/XFree86.0.log without being root. Why does a system become insecure if I can see my own X log ? I guess that is a "feature" too.

i don't know how important ssl certificates are but i don't give a rat's patootie about 'em but as you said, that's just me. I have been puzzled as to why only root view the things in /var/log though. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

  11. I don't what the .kde directory permissions may have to to do with failsafe booting. Its a plain and simple mandrake KDE bug.

i don't see it as a bug. it's more of a feature. i wouldn't want stuff in my kde directory to have the perms you listed because (1) there is nothing in there that important; so what if someone steals you're desktop config and (2) all important private stuff, kmail for e.g., has it's own protected directory. I'd rather be able to have one user see another users directorys since i use more than one distro but want the desktops to look/behave simlarly

  12. it won't crash... right away :)

If you don't do anything processor intensive (compiling kde, installing UT 2003) you should be just fine :)

Well, unfortunately i proved myself right. i actually got past installing ut2003 but playing it is a whole 'nother matter.

It freezes EVERYTIME i play the game.

  13. Got it.

But as I said, I have always done that, and never a problem till now, so my first impulse was to blame the driver.

    Now I know, and thanks.

well, everyone learns at some point :-) it's just one of those things that doesn't always go wrong, just goes wrong when you least expect it.

and just to put an opposite spin on things i installed the drivers from within X and they worked too (but i had to reboot my computer)
