You can apply updates by going into System/Configuration/Packaging/Mandriva Updates within KDE.
I would suggest disabling the services I listed to help speed things up even more. I got my boot time to 40 seconds or so doing this. Plus it helps when the machine is running too.
I' ve disabled the services you have suggested and my PC works very better !
Thanks a lot !!!

Thanks a lot , speed is improved without Kat and lisa !
It is still a bit slower when a file is to be loaded .Do you see something wrong ? ( in adsl-status the link appears down though it is working fine ?!?)
[root@localhost lando]# service -s
adsl-status: Link is down (can't read pppoe PID file /var/run/pppoe.conf-adsl.pid.pppoe)

Mandriva 2006 is very slower than my old MDK 10.0 ....both surfing web and offline ( file open is very slow...)
Do you know some problems about that ?
Many thanks.
-
Mandriva-Linux-free-2006 installation procedure starts asking to choose between
(1) Upgrade MDK Linux release 10.0 (official) and (2) Install .
What does this mean ? that this distro is a MDK 10.0 ?
I 've installed this release an year and half ago !
Many thanks.
-
I ' ve added some entries in fstab and in /mnt ....and it works !
-
What partitions are you trying to see? Windows partitions?
I ' ve windows partitions on hda1 and windows + linux partitions in hdb1 ...I cannot see no partition .
In fstab there aren't hda1 and hdb1 and /mnt doesn't contain partition mounting points ......( MDK Move have these definitions and works fine....).
Thanks a lot.
-
I ' ve installed Mandriva live CD ....and it works...but I cannot see the partitions on my HD (though the hardware can be seen) . What have I to do to see the files in these partitions ?
Thanks a lot.

The way below had not worked also if I don't know why ...........
File Association > Known Type > video > Add > .wmv
The right way it is that below ....
File Association > Known Type > video > select x-msvideo > Filename Patterns > Add > *.wmv
-
I've KDE and the setting works for .mpg because is already in the file list .If in KDE go to "configure your desktop" -> components ->file associations. You can then set an application to be opened for a file type. I don't know the Gnome stuff, but there's a similar way of setting associations. But if I want to add .wmv though the operation proceed ok ...this (and other ...) extension is not added in the list !!! ( Totem Movie Player tries to open this extension but it's not able because a codec is missing....and mplayer open this file using the file menu "open with" entry....)
-
I've installed mplayer ...and it works if I choose it through the file menu entry "Open with " .
In the file menu' there is a Totem media player entry that I do not want to use...
What have I to set so that mplayer can open a video file with a simple double clic on it ?
Thanks a lot !

Guarddog was not in CD's 1-6 for 10.2 which surprised me. I went to http://rpm.pbone.net/ to get it. Works fine.
I have MDK 10.0 and also the rpm of that site don't work .........
Have you installed guarddog with "urpmi" ?
Many thanks .
-
I cannot get the problem......
[root@localhost GUARDDOGMDK]# urpmi guarddog
no package named guarddog
[root@localhost GUARDDOGMDK]# dir
guarddog-2.4.0-2mdk.i586.rpm guarddog-2.4.0-2mdk.src.rpm
there is guarddog in this directory !
I' ve MDK 10 and it is my first time that I try to use urpmi ........
Many thanks for your help !
Regards.

As I said it's not an hardware problem !
I've get the solution searching "writing to devices is not supported " with Google !
It's a supermount problem, disabling it (supermount disable ) and opening mnt/floppy (after mount /mnt/floppy) it is possible paste files with the browser (this because the floppy icon is desappeared from the desktop ).

My floppy cannot write in MDK 10 environment but is OK under Knoppix live .
I get "writing to devices is not supported " doing a copy /paste .
No messages but it desn't work using cp or dd utilities from terminal.
fstab is > /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,users,rw 0 0
mnt/floppy permissions are >>> rwxrwxrwx
I've tried in root and with my user name.
Any suggestion ?
Thanks a lot, regards.

This DVD contains MDK 10 , FreeBSD 5.2.1 and many other data . The distros are in .ISO format that I'll have to burn on many CD ......then it's not a bootable DVD...and it works fine in windows environment....
-
The DVD containing MDK installation data cannot open (the same DVD works fine in windows ! ). The fstab entry is below ... is it OK ?
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto mask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
-
Sorry, but I cannot read DVD data ...then I think I need
some basic software before using " Mplayer or Xine "
-
I've installed a DVD Rom that works fine with CD ...-What software
have I to install to read DVD disks ??????
Thanks a lot.

I am suggested this command ...that works >>>>>>
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib
is it unknown to this forum ?
-
I've an old Glib-2.2.3 installed at prefix /usr (from MDK 10 distro )
and the new Glib-2.4.6 at the prefix /usr/local .
Pango ./configure shows this log (with variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH already set ) >>>>>
checking for pkg-config... (cached) /usr/bin/pkg-config
checking for GLIB - version >= 2.4.0...
*** 'pkg-config --modversion glib-2.0' returned 2.4.6, but GLIB (2.2.3)
*** was found! If pkg-config was correct, then it is best
*** to remove the old version of GLib. You may also be able to fix the error
*** by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable, or by editing
*** /etc/ld.so.conf. Make sure you have run ldconfig if that is
*** required on your system.
*** If pkg-config was wrong, set the environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH
*** to point to the correct configuration files
I prefer to keep also the old version of Glib , then how can I modify LD_LIBRARY_PATH
or what have I to put in /etc/ld.so.conf ???
Sorry...I'm a beginner......Thanks a lot in advance.
Regards.
