  1. Yeah, LG sucks. Too bad that most people get them in their pre-built systems, and don't really buy them by choice.

LG has stated to Mandrake at least that they don't support Linux, so I won't ever support them... I mean, what if it was happening on Windows? Would they jump then? Probably... Bastards.

  2. Eh, it's not that bad. :)

I actually like it. It's fast, simple, efficient (at least for installing a base system). The only part that really needs work is hardware detection and configuration (for people who don't know too much about hardware and modules and stuff), and package selection (for people who don't want to apt-get install everything themselves). If the GUI installer is done right, it will be great.

Someone elsewhere mentioned Red Hat and Debian merging... I'd love to see it happen, but I doubt it will... We can always hope. ;)

  3. We have ported Red Hat's Anaconda installer to Debian; essentially, we replaced calls to RPM with calls to APT, and replaced Red Hat-specific configuration hooks with calls into the configlets and debconf. We have also written a tool called PickAx that facilitates the creation of Anaconda-based Debian installation CD sets. We are also working with various parties to add/merge RPM support into the mainline APT, to allow Debian- and RPM-based distributions to be managed using a single APT codebase, and possibly even to allow Debian and RPM packages to coexist side by side.

It is our hope that a distribution-independent Anaconda and a distribution-independent APT (plus, eventually, a distribution-independent configuration framework) will, along with a stronger LSB, help unify further the various Linux distributions.

This is excellent news, and I can't wait to see what comes of all of this.

  4. For a list of most of the games I have for Linux, check here: http://icculus.org/~dolson/mygames

    These are probably my favorites:

    1) Enemy Territory

    2) Return to Castle Wolfenstein

    3) Majesty Gold

    4) Space Tripper

    5) Rune

    6) Quake 3 Arena

    7) Neverwinter Nights

    8) Descent 3

    9) Soldier of Fortune

    10) Unreal Tournament

That doesn't include the beta of Ballistics, though... Which would make it to probably #4 right now. (By the way, if you preorder Ballistics now, you can get in on the beta, so it's cool!)

  5. ...Battle Tic Tac Toe!

Well, it's not done yet, but it is coming along nicely.

I put a developer journal up on our site, and so you can check it out there for the day-by-day developments on the game.

Here's a screenshot of the title screen (hey, if LGP can get away with just posting the menu screenshot for Ballistics, so can I!):

Anyhow, yeah, so it's basically a pretty version of Tic Tac Toe... It'll have AI and stuff, so yeah...

Yeah, and anyhow, I'm the only developer, and I'm doing this in my spare time, so it might be a while before it's done. :)

  6. Majesty is a great game that LGP released a short time ago. I was on the beta, so I'm listed in the manual. It's not a FPS game, so if you were hoping it was, sorry to disappoint.

You might like it though. You build up your kingdom and you get quests and you defend your castle and stuff like that. You don't control units directly, you influence them with cash rewards. It's neat though...

Anyhow, it's not for everyone, but it does run well, even on lower-end machines.

    Here's a screenshot of it:

  7. Okay, you missed my sense of humor as well. Let me explain it to you.

You asked if you could run UT2003 on <insert some wacky low-end system that will crawl, if even that, with that sort of a game> and so I responded by pointing you at a different game, namely Majesty. I mentioned that I was in the manual, just because I am, and I'm sorta proud that I am (even though I was just a beta tester). Anyhow, Majesty would run like a champ on that system you have, but UT2003 will not. It will crawl. It crawls on my system, but it's fairly playable if I turn down some (read: all) of the details.

Your system is basically half of my system:

    AMD 1.2GHz / 2 = P3 550

    512MB RAM / 2 = 256MB RAM

    GF4Ti4200 / 2 = GF2GTS

So theoretically, the game would run half as "good" on your system as it does on mine, and I doubt that overclocking will help you much.

In any case, why not just try the demo? Not like the specs are much different, aside from disk space, between the demo and the full game. It's only 145MB, and even on dialup, it won't take that long to get it... Maybe 8 hours.

  8. Cool. Now I can unload some of those unwieldy filters I have been using. Thanks for the link. Now I just need a few more pieces of spam to train my filter (geez, never thought I'd say that).

Hehe. It has been working for me, just too bad I didn't know about this when I was getting about 100 "Microsoft Security Viruses" in my inbox each morning. :

  9. Well, I don't know about you, but I tried UT2003 on a Windows system with lower specs than my Linux box, and it blew mine out of the water... It's because Epic has a really nice Direct3D renderer, and a ... functional OpenGL renderer. I don't think Ryan is working on the GL renderer so much as making sure the game works, which is what I'm happy about, but don't be going around telling people that games are so much faster, etc on Linux, because right now, they aren't. At least not the newer UT-based ones.
