  1. Debian has been running fine on my old Pentium II-based server box... Uptime is currently at 113 days... My friend in Toronto is running his website off of a Pentium 166 with 32MB of RAM with Debian on it, and it's been up for only 4 hours less than mine. If you need an easy installer, you could try that version released by Progeny with their Anaconda port. I'm gonna try it sometime, as it looks pretty neat...

Never tried Arch, so I can't comment on that.

Slackware is cool too, and swaret might be a good piece of software for updating it.

Lots of choices... It's up to you. :)

  2. Yeah, that's sorta what I meant, but in a better way towards Gnome... I like them both, don't get me wrong. I just don't like Qt's ugliness (sorry, but just look at it!) and I use only GTK apps anyhow.

Now, the main reason I dug up this thread was to give a Gnome tip that I think someone complained about before (perhaps not in this thread).

    Desktop icon size.

You can change it by opening up the File Management properties dialog and setting the default zoom level. You can change the font and size of the desktop font in the Font properties dialog. I wish they would have a single dialog called Desktop Options of something where you can set these and know clearly what they will do... I mean, when you see File Management Properties, that scream "File Manager - Nautilus" to me, not "Desktop icons!!!"

    You know?

  3. I dunno if Gnome has that ability, but in Gnome 2.2 I never found it. Either it's missing, which means to me it is less usable, or it is hidden, which means they hid it so well it is -well- les usable.

That's right, 2.2 doesn't have that feature. Didn't really bother me, but 2.4 that I'm using now has it, and I use it.

Gnome goes about things in a different manner - let's do a little bit perfectly, and KDE does a lot half-assed. Well, that's my general opinion anyhow. :)

  4. Actually, thinking back on it, the actual reason that I decided to definately keep Gnome and not go back to OpenBox/idesk, was that I am able to drag pictures into Gimp from the desktop and file manager... Somthing I couldn't do with KDE last I tried. Yes, it was that impressive to me... That's one example of how things should just work. I know, Qt vs GTK2, but whatever. That's why I use Gnome. That and it's hot. :)

  5. I use Gnome because it looks more consistent, stuff just works properly and how you would expect it to work, it's not overly complex and redundant... I don't know... I just used to hate it, and used to swear by KDE, but now I just swear at KDE. ;) Well, not quite. Both are great, but I just like GTK2 stuff and therefore Gnome, better. Whatever floats your boat.

  6. GetTimeOfDay() or something like that? I don't know, I don't use delays unless I'm only testing things. I just use time-based movement and such things as that. And since I use SDL because I'm doing games, I have access to SDL_Delay(), which does sorta what sleep() does I think...

Anyhow, cprogramming.com is a decent forum and stuff, IMHO. But I'd like to build on this one here... No reason why not to, right? :)

  7. Okay, have you ever looked at this? http://pgshopping.com/mdkxp/?c=ttrls/mdkkernel

You would need to modify the commands to your needs, as it was written with an older version of Mandrake, and therefore different kernel names, but the actual proper steps are there.

Now, if you want the actual config from the kernel you are running, it should be kept in /boot/. You can grab it from there or try a make oldconfig or something.

    Good luck.

  8. I use irssi alot, and I'm constantly clearing my text buffers using the /c alias... I kept doing that on my bash terminals, and it wouldn't work, obviously, so... Here's what I did:

Open a console. "su" to root. "nano /c" Type in "#!/bin/sh" and hit Enter. Then type in "clear" and hit CTRL+X, then Y (I think) to save the file. "chmod +x /c" Then you're laughing.

Yeah, so no one here might benefit, but I figured, just in case, I'd post it anyhow.

  9. Wow. I am so psyched... The main thing that concerns me is the availability of Linux to everyone - I don't want to use SuSE; nor will other Debian users, Gentoo users, etc etc. We want to use our own distros, but what kind of cooperation will Novell/SuSE/IBM have with us now? Will they help the other distros? Will Novell really make any money on the desktop if they have competition from Debian, Mandrake, Gentoo, etc?

You put it very well... The future just got a lot more interesting.

And the only thing we can do is wait.
