  1. was there/is htere anything tha tyou did to get around it? if so, please let me know

errrm. nope. i had only the old woody installed on my box that didn't work with the new installer, that is: it was not available then (and it was only for one week on my box). i find debian too outdated. :P

Yes, it's outdated if you don't use Sid.

Anyhow, questions like this are easier answered on Debian-specific forums, or in Debian chat rooms on IRC...

A guess would be that you could try getting the rpppoe .deb file and install it from a floppy or something, and see if that works.

For the record, the way I set up my systems is with Woody CD1 using 2.4.x, then once I get the base installed, I set up the networking and then upgrade to Sid and proceed to install whatever I want. Works For Me.

  2. I think TeamSpeak can use a low codec, but not really entirely sure on how much bandwidth it uses... ie: if you use a 6kbps codec, I don't know if that means sending, receiving, or both. Even if it's 6k/up 6k/down, you should be fine, since you can play Savage over a 56k modem.

The only thing that I'd ask is that we use nicks in the game that make it easy to recognize each other. If I'm playing alongside tyme, I don't wanna see "BigBabyJimmy" instead of "tyme" know what I'm sayin'? I'm currently called Grabthroat, but when we play, I'll call myself "dolson" so you know who I am. This is not an order, or anything... I'd just prefer it this way.

  3. wow... actually works..

    Good find my friend :D

Do you mean this thread in general, or the option I found? Because I set it but I don't know if it makes a difference. I wish these options were right in the preferences, like, just a checkbox that says "Surf as fast as I can (might cause issues, use at own risk)" or something that applies all the best settings.

  4. I like my 5700 ultra, plays my games just fine.  You might look for a hardrive that gets 8MB cache too.  I don't mind my ti4200 either but Dolson plays more games than I.

I only have a Ti4200 as well. Most of my gaming these days takes place on my Xbox. I have all but given up on Linux gaming.

  5. Cool now I have a job so I should be getting the computer in about a month or se Maybe towards the middle of September or something.  I'm so happy :)

    -Luis

    Cool :)

Make sure you got Savage, TeamSpeak, and a headset so we can play together and use TeamSpeak to talk. I'm trying to find more people so we can do this and not even use the text chat - that'd be awesome. We could start our own clan/group and stuff.

  6. definately much faster !!

    thanks pmpatrick

This is from my Debian system:

    # Uncomment the network protocols you don't want loaded:

    # alias net-pf-1 off # Unix

    # alias net-pf-2 off # IPv4

    alias net-pf-3 off # Amateur Radio AX.25

    alias net-pf-4 off # IPX

    alias net-pf-5 off # DDP / appletalk

    alias net-pf-6 off # Amateur Radio NET/ROM

    alias net-pf-9 off # X.25

    alias net-pf-10 off # IPv6

alias net-pf-11 off # ROSE / Amateur Radio X.25 PLP

alias net-pf-19 off # Acorn Econet

Might that help with speeds too? As far as I know, the only ones you need are the first two.

  7. This might be one of the first games that I might buy, by the way Dolson do you play as a commander or just a normal player , dunno what they are called.  Commander view is like a re-enhanced star-craft.

I just got this game like three days ago or whatever, I haven't had enough practice to play as Commander... I don't even know what I'm doing as an Action player, lol

I just wanna play online with people I know (or other Linux users) and have a good time. I already convinced some people at work to get it, hehe.

  8. Well the video card says it supports Doom 3 if you scroll down...I think that's the reason I got it :D

    -Luis

Ah, well, here's hoping it performs well. I am disappointed with my GF4 Ti4200 and was since I bought it, so next time I'm not skimping. :)

  9. Man I wish it did! nope it has this ' Intergrated Mobility M6 ' which I know it's not good.  Thankfully LiquidZoo is helping me get the idea of a good gaming computer for a cheap price, I just need to get a job and money, but hey christmas is just around the coner!  Get a few A's in school I'll be just perfect.

    -Luis

    Ah, snap! :)

If only laptops had AGP slots, eh?

  10. It looks ok, but I'd bump up the video card to at least a 5900 if you wanna play Doom 3 when it's available for Linux.

And as for the hard drive, yeah, I agree. My games partition alone is 40GB, heh.

I have a lot of Linux games (at least compared to the number that there are), and here I have listed all of them, I think. The ones in bold I love to play. :)

  11. Cool once I get a good gaming PC I'll make sure to contact you so we can all play! This is defenetly a MUST have game.

    -Luis

Those laptop specs look pretty good, but do you have a decent video card in there? :)

  12. Hey guys, we could either plan a time on this board, or using the board's chat room, or even make our own chat room on IRC... Or we could start an email chain...

I'm off work tomorrow at 1am Eastern, so when I get home I could play, or we could set up a time for like the weekend or something... I'd love to play, even though I don't know really what I'm doing yet.

I could try running the server, or we could just meet in the chatroom and pick a server to use.

Of course, I am using the full game, not the demo. I don't have the demo, not sure how it is compared to the full game. There are always lots of people playing the full game though, at least in the last few days there have been many servers, many with lots of players.

The game's only $19.99US for a CD-key, or you could probably find a copy in your local gameshop cheaper (mine was $13.50 Canadian).

  13. This is something i figured out, maybe I'm a dumb-a for not knowing this off the bat, but you have to leave the DVD (or CD1) in the drive to play.   The game will launch just fine iwth no disk but it will do random disk checks and if the disk isn't there, the program simply closes with no error.

As a second side note, buy the game.  Get he DVD version if you have a DVD reader, and play it a lot.  This game is awsome all on it's own, with the best single player mode of any UT game yet, and we should do all we can to support game makers that do native linux ports anyway.

edit*  it should go without saying, that you actualy need to have the disk mounted and not just 'in' the drive.

Interesting, I've had the game crash "randomly" on me too.

Do you know if the 3236 patch stops it from crashing? under windows it removes the CD check. I just realized I never patched my linux install.

I have the DVD version and I would rather not leave the DVD in the drive for feer of it getting damaged. I was quitre happy that Epic removed it in the 3236 patch (in windows at least).

Yes, the patch works.. And I don't need to have the cd mounted anymore.

Since I have installed the patch, I've had no crashes of any kind. B)

I have put off buying this game for a long time, since the demo was really pretty poor on my system, as was UT2003. I'm not sure if I have something on my system set up wrong or what, but I tried it again last night, the demo, and my frame rate is only about 20-40 tops, often dipping into the red...

    My specs are:

    Athlon XP 1800+

    512MB PC133 SDRAM

    MSI GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB

    SB Live! 5.1

    Debian Sid

I have some credit with TuxGames, so I might have to purchase the DVD version and all that, but I dunno... I don't play games much anymore on Linux, so maybe I should just hold off.

  14. >The problem might be of a lack of a single player campaign/story;

More of an online game then??  Maybe I won't bother downloading it then....

I almost kinda wished I didn't pay for it now :( I am having a ton of problems either with the download or just getting the damn things installed and running now. I had no problems with the demo, but now...I am not even getting any help of suggestions in the support forums, and it seems like everyone else is having a lot of linux related issues with the game as well. Plus the updater just complains and craps out now hehehehehe I am still just trying to get a complete download of the .gz file for linux so that I can extract it and see what is going on, but it keeps corrupting before I can get it all. I have the ISO image on CD which did install and was working (sort of) but now it just errors out on the updates.

?? What issues? I just bought this today and it worked just fine, I even joined a game and played until I was killed once, and then I quit.

You have the original CD, right? Why not try this:

    Install the game.

    Download the 2.00b patch.

Untar it into the game directory.

    Download the 2.00b->2.00c patch.

Untar it into the game directory.

    Play game.

Let me know if you have any issues.

  15. So then for Linux, Liteon is a good choice?? I have a Liteon CD-RW drive, it's older, but it's worked a treat since day one.

I was thinking about Pioneer though, since they made my DVD-ROM, and Liteon's DVD-ROMs really REALLY blow. At least the ones circa about two years ago did.

  16. I want to know what a good DVD burner is for Linux... I might be able to get one sometime soon, and the only one I've looked at seriously so far is the Pioneer DVR-107. It's an 8x DVD+/-RW and I can get it for about $125 Canadian.

Any experience and advice is appreciated.

  17. run

parted -i /dev/hd? (hda, hdb etc....)

and see if it finds any problems like overlapping partitions? If it does, my own experience has been 100% with it fixing the overlaping partitions.

bvc, I tried it, and this is what it says:

    Using /dev/hda

Information: The operating system thinks the geometry on /dev/hda is 155061/16/63. Therefore,

    cylinder 1024 ends at 503.999M.

    (parted)

  18. The default mk3fs reserves 5% for root.

None else seems to mind but me and dOlsen.... however he's one person I thought would know this....

    or did ya forget !!!!

I don't know why I should know this, but I hate ext3 as I stated above, and since I don't reboot very often, I don't ever see the stupid fsck crap that it runs and so on. I'm just going to backup these two partitions and reformat them as reiserfs.

I am curious as to why this post was moved to a forum about shell commands and programming when it's really nothing to do with that.
