  1. Can you upgrade to 10.1 CE or is it best to fresh install? I have been having a bunch of silly little problems with 10 official and am about to upgrade. I think a fresh install is always best but does it really make a difference? Could upgrading prevent having to re-configure my preferences and settings that I have already configured?

  2. Morning,

I am trying to access my linux box from a windoze laptop. I need to access the X environment so putty will not do. What are the best options out there? I have been trying to use VNC but had a little trouble setting it up so before I investigate are there other options?

    Cheers

  3. Good Afternoon,

I have rececently started administrating my system with WEBMIN. Under the Samba Server config. I notice there is a HOME directory share by default. When I have everything up and running and some new shares in place that work, I cannot access the HOME share or PRINTER share for that matter. Everytime I try to Map Network Drive from Windows it asks for user/password forever, using a valid user or even root doesn't help. Does anyone know why this is?

  4. Ready set go!

Greetings! I have been having some silly problems setting up my Linux network and was hoping for some assistance.

Issue #1 - I have a couple of NTFS formatted drives in my Linux box, they are mounted and readable. I am trying to access them through my network from a XP based machine. For the life of me I cannot get access to them. The closest that I have come is to be able, via network neighbourhood, to see the shered drive and have it prompt me for my username and password - after inputting the info. access is not granted and it asks for the user and pass indefinately. I had this problem in the past but cannot remember what the cause is.

Issue #2 - In my /mnt directory I have a number of old share directories that were created in the past for numerous reasons. With no reference to these in the smb.conf or anywhere else - they keep reappearing after they are deleted. That is if I can delete them in the first place. What causes this? What am I failing to delete/correct?

Issue #3 - What is the most straightforward example of how to share a directory between a Linux box and a windows machine. For example: I want to share /home/bob/stuff with windows machines connected to the network. What are the needed steps to achieve this.

I am not a newbie but I have been struggling with these things for too long and my brain is on fire. :cheeky:

    Thanks in advance.

  5. I have been searching all day to try to find a solution to this problem! I cannot use the Thesaurus in Writer. I have followed all Openoffice documents and many online suggestions. It is still greyed out and not accesisble. Under the options for Writer, I have set the correct setting but under the Thesaurus tab there is no check-box at all.

    Version is Openoffice 1.1

    Mandrake 10

I have tried so many things my brain hurts. Can the thesaurus be installed after the main install? If so, where can I locate a copy of it.

    Thanks in advance,

  6. I installed and was running Xmms 1.2.10 and everything was working awsome. I got a segmentation fault and reported the bug but it is still unresolved. My question is how do I remove the entire package so that there is no trace of it - then hopeefully reinstall it to work again? Is this resonable?

Xmms was installed from source and not an RPM. So the rpm uninstall won't work and even then I often find config files left over when I do RPM uninstalls for other apps.

    Thanks,

  7. I wonder what else could be turned off to speed up the boot process. Does anybody know any *plain English* up-to-date description of services that run on startup?  There used to be one on old forum mandrakeuser.org, but it is probably a bit outdated. It used to be that Windows was lagging behind Linux in this regard, but now it takes for my laptop only a fraction of time to boot XP than Linux.

In the Mandrake Control Center > System > Services menu there is an info button that, when pressed, gives a small blurb about what the service is and the ability to turn it on or off. This is by no means comprehensive but it helped me alot in deciding what services to deactivate on one machine.

  8. I thought I posted this question but it seems that I never submitted it (if it is found anywhere else - please forgive  )

Mandrake 10 seems to be hanging at boot right when it checks for new hardware, I have had it installed for a few weeks and it happens intermittantly. Anyone else have this problem and know possible solution. I can interactively bypass it or shutdown the harddrake service and both options workaround the problem. But I am curios to find the dang issue.
