Hi Topdog you should take a look here: ubuntuforums.org
I can't answer the hardware questions because I don't have the hardware you're naming.
Firefox is the standard web-browser in Ubuntu as default and it's working perfect.
The thunderbird you've get through package manager, Gimp 2 is installed as default, also open office.
K3b you can get through, package manager if you inable the universe repertoire (sp?).
Also check Ubuntu unofficial starter guide: here

Heres my screenie. Take a looksee at the gdesklets at the top of the screen, the left one is a window list, the one on the right has time, battery, volume and a window menu, the one underneath it, a notification area/system tray. You can click the tab on the end of them and they hide away, with the tab becoming transparent. Theres a hidden one in the bottom right.
How or where did you get that? :o
Did I miss an option or Gdesklet theme?

Germ, the link you gave my browser said the website don't exist. (or it could be that the server is down)
-
Yep, try uninstall them and install them from the new urmpi place.
-
If the urmpi is locked try a reboot.
About the urmpi error try to find some alternative urmpi links. It could be that the urmpi file you wanna use is corrupted. It's just a guess :/

Yep, but I'm using Gnome ;) and I just bought a brand new keyboard with thousands of shortcuts buttons, so I stumble upon this site with a google search :)
-
This is a must to those who got Keyboard with alot of shortcut buttons which aren't supported in Linux:

:D No problem! :)

Setup a bittorrent. I usually use it for very huge downloads.
-
In my case Ubuntu runs alot faster than Mandrake.
-
I'm testing Yoper at the moment, but my main distro is Ubuntu. Before that it was Mandrake.
-
Well, I'm running this at 60Hz and there is no other refreshrate available. Everything is otherwise just great: fonts etc render perfectly and the display is crisp and clear. I'll try to run the configuration agan, but I got to figure out the correct refreshartes first. HP/Compac is not giving very much infromation, though...
Thanks for the hints!

If you know the specs for your monitor, you can editing the XF86Config-4 file [/etc/X11/XF86Config-4]. I did that because I didi have the same problem. But be carefull so you don't blow up your monitor ;)

ummm...seems the easy urmpi (the web site) is down at the moment.

You press the edit button and write [sOLVED] in the headline(s).

if anyone's gonna break anything, it's always me
uh... i would not brag so much about it. i believe you are not such an expert at breaking machines as my girlfriends dad (68 years old and a computer maniac). he managed to break both winxp and mandrakelinux five times in four weeks, leaving the task of repairing his box on me.
Aaaah, the noble but non-dieing art of OS-smashing! It's and honoured and glorious sports deciplin reaching many decades back in time.
And I'm one of the pupils!

Thanks for the reply :)
Okay...I'm downloading v. 2.1.0-4, I'll then avoid Reiser4(though it was one of the reason to try Yoper), Keep only to KDE and .rpms downloading files...got it!
If I find Yoper great, I'll happy put some money in for the new server :)

Hello
After using Mandrake then Ubuntu I decided perhaps give Yoper a chance.
I have been looking into their homepage to get a feeling what's about. So far so promising, Yoper got only i686 tree which suit me perfectly and KDE 3.3 which is also good.
What I really want is to hear for those guys (or girls) who tried Yoper, what's good and what's bad about Yoper, so I get a picture of it before messing around with it.
Cheers
