  1. wah... anyway, that's all I can give, am not really searching, just so happen that I tried to set-up a samba primary domain controller, and had me my samba doc, really lots of docss, commands. and config guide.. then I saw that command I' d gave you... but since that doesńot work, hope you'll figure it out yourself... good luck

btw, try use irc, logon to #samba channel, lots of users there, maybe some can help

  2. Im trying to download the thacs, kde3.4 rpms, from one of its mirrors, so I can install it to my home pc, Its a shame, dont have an internet connection there, so just want to know, ( especially from thacs) aside from the kde34 rpms from thacs mirror, what other rpm file should I download, since it has been required that the ff: urpmi repositorys sould be present:

    1.mandrake main

    2.mandrake contrib

    3. plf 10.1 free

    4. plf non-free

... actually, I already installed it in my desktop here at my workś pc using 10.1, but did not got the chance to list all the files that required by urmpi during that install....

    :help:

  3. I have the same problem with almost all KDE applications in KDE 3.4 from Thac's packages. Some menu entries and some toolbar icons are doubled. The problem with toolbars can be workarounded by "configure toolbars", then remove any icon, give it back and apply changes - the second set of icons disapears.  But I still don't know, how to get rid of the doubled menu entries.

    Try

    update-menus -v

    first as root

    then as user

that was my problem b4 and was solved by that command as per thacs advice B)

  4. you dont really need to touch anything in the conf file of your samba if all you want to do is to access your win xp from you linux machine... and like polemicz said, try to log on it ( ur XP) from ur Linux using the admin username... also, if that user you intend to use to login from ur linux is a normal user in ur Xpee, try to create its own shared folder there

  5. try this one

    $ net -S DOMAIN-Server -U user JOIN

where domain-server = name of your domain server host

user = user M ( the user in the domain)

the command will let the local pc (samba server) to join the domain... havent tried it yet my self, coz as i've said, dont have a windows domain

  6. I have not tried my linux to join a windows domain, but I've tried windows to join a Samba PDC, so... in joining a Samba PDC, you should create the user account in your samba host, and those account should be able to login to a windows box, even if those account does not exist in that box (windows / usually 2k/xp). If a win2k box will join a windows domain, same scenario will happen, user accounts are created only at the windows host acting as domain, but I dunno it that scenario will work in linux,.. so you better try ( if u have'nt tried it yet) to create an account in your linux box similar to the account assigned to you and exist already in the Win Domain server. then use that to login to your linux box... well, I dunno if that really wrks... but you could just give it a try...

  7. who cares really about the name? doesnt matter what the name is, as long as it is linux, Im no t using linux because of its distro name, im using it because of how it works. I like mandrake because I am able to install it to almost pc here n my place, even without the internet connection, i've been able to install the common needs of a regular pc user.. so now Mandriva, i will still continue to use it.. because it is still linux

  8. I've just upgraded my kde3.4 upon reading this, ofcourse from 1st release of thacs kde 3.4 also, everythings doin well before, but after those available upgrade has been installled, it does display, but when cliking the kde start menu, the panel will just gone, dunno why! well, after trying to find out why, got no luck, so what i did was reinstalled all the package related to kde... I remove all kde packages, then install the latest packages, still from thacs.. so now, I have this new kde installed... the problem with the panel that just disappeared has been fixed, but the new problem appears... almost all of the applications on the start menu duplicated itself. I'd tried the menu editor but no luck, still there... I created a new user and tried to log in there, but the problem still appears, see attached image.. .. the menu duplicates... eh.. is there something wrong with the new packages that i've installed... ???

  9. I am still unable to get it to work right. I have no problem accessing Linux from Windows. Accessing Windows from Linux is a different story.

Sometimes it works fine, but suddenly I am asked for a username and a password. No matter what I put in, access is denied. I've tried restarting Samba, restarting Shorewall , log out of Linux, Log out of Windows - sometimes it helps, sometimes not. Sometimes I don't do anything and I get access again.

Another strange thing is that when I try to copy certain files from the Windows box to the Linux box, I get a message saying "could not read smb:/...". When I use Windows to copy them to Linux, nothing like this happens.  I couldn't figure out what makes those files different from other files. Most of them are binaries, but not all of them.

Actually, you don't need to have a samba server running to access your windows from your linux machine, just use your konqueror and type smb://ip-of-your-pc , when ask with a username and password, try to use your 2k/xp administrator account, you should be able to access all of the shared folder of disk. You dont need to create this administrator account in your linux.

Did you use LinNeighborhood? I encountered problem using this when I changed my mandrake from 10.0 to 10.1, dunno if the kernel really was the problem, I mean the default kernel of 10.1 oe.. see this post when it will timed out, LinNeighborhood will sometimes ask for a password and username..but will never accept it. that was before, now I rarely use linNeighborhood, I rather use konqueror typing smb://target-pc, well, so far so good...

Try to access your windows from your linux, then at the same time, try to check your logs at the konsole... #tail -f /var/log/messages , when that strange things appears, try to check what happen thru the logs...

ALso, some say that they dont encountered any problem when accessing windows shares thru CLI, using smbclient command, well, if you'r comportable to use it, you may try it...

btw, my kernel right now is 2.6.8.1.24mdk, 10.1 oe... you may try to update yours if u still using 2.6.8.1.12...

  10. I installed Mandrake 10.1 official now. Then I upgraded KDE to 3.4. Everything is like OK. But I have a new problem now . OS runs level 5. KDEE login screen is appeared , but does not log in. I passes this problem changing init level to 3, and then startx in konsole. I am now KDE 3.4. How should I solve this login problem?I would welcome any idea. Thanks.

since you can can access your home/user under init level 3... try to rename your .kde folder under /home/user/.kde , dont delete it, just rename it, then change to init 5 again then try if u can login..

  11. try to check you logs in the server that you want to connect to, those time that you've tried to established ssh connection. so you may know what was happening during that time..

try to check also the /etc/hosts.allow if there's an entry there that specify sshd to accept to a particular ip only... and also, try to check if sshd service is up :)

  12. did you create a separate partition before you install mndk? during the installation, you should been ask to partition manually or automatic, if you choose the automatic, mndk will be the one to decide which partition to use... or maybe those hda5-7 are not mounted, try to mount them from the mcc - partition option = mount points, it should be detected as ntfs if those are still the partitions containing you xp...

  13. urpmi kdebase (and after that urpmi kdepim kdeedu kdemultimedia etcetc (have a look in the Mandrake control center to see all the packages)

Konsole said the following. Sorry, How shall I do now?

    [root@localhost niti]# urpmi kdebase

Some package requested cannot be installed:

    kdeartwork-3.4.0-7.mdk10.2.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.2.thac.i586)

    kdebase-3.4.0-14.mdk10.2.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.2.thac.i586)

    kdebase-common-3.4.0-14.mdk10.2.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.2.thac.i586)

    kdebase-konsole-3.4.0-14.mdk10.2.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.2.thac.i586)

    libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.2.thac.i586 (due to unsatisfied libmasc.so.1)

    libkdebase4-3.4.0-14.mdk10.2.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.2.thac.i586)

    Continue? (Y/n) n

once again check the required urpmi repositorys.

you must have 5 of them

    1.mandrake main

    2.mandrake contrib

    3. plf 10.1 free

    4. plf non-free

    5. thacs rpm

if not there will be failed dependencys

    and yes kde-3.4.0 requires xorg-6.8.2

  14. you can add as many user as u like in your samba box, and then add that in your smbpassd file.. then use that username to access from your windows box..( btw, i posted my problem about samba as pdc, right now, I did'nt made it yet... :( ) k, if you're trying to access from win98, u should use those username u created inyour linux to logon in the win98 box, else you'll get an error.. from your winNT, well, I think you already tried... anyway, you can login the username of your nt from to your win98, but you will be sharing your access rights.. another thing, make sure that your firewall did'nt block those ports use by samba., you can configure or check your firewall at the MCC, or you may try to check your logs also what was happening....

    samba.org... guide
