  1. 2 PCs both running MDK 10.0 connected via cat 5 crossover with 1 PC connected to internet via ext serial dialup modem. At this point I am NOT trying to get internet sharing working.

I have all the networking "bibles" in PDF format on my desktop including NFS and Samba.

I posted on several forums about 1 month ago that I just wanted to "see" the files on the other PC. I indicated that I would learn all the intricate stuff later, but for now, just something simple. I had been able to ping each PC. Well...........received bargeloads of information on CL stuff.....no luck, until someone said simply to type sftp://192.168.0.1 into Konqueror or terminal. Works, (am able to see konqueror files both ways), but here's problem.......

After doing so, I close konqueror (I'm done with "sharing files) then connect to net with Kppp, but my browsers don't work. My resolv.conf file gets messed with and have to do this  to fix it:

gedit resolv.conf and delete any entries (I think sftp adds the other PC's address to the file)

    remove the eth0 connection

then browsers are OK. Any ideas what is going on and how to fix?

i dont have an idea how come that sftp touch the resolv.conf file, but maybe you should try to put permanently in your kppp configuration the dns of your isp, hope that works

PS: need to get a small network up and running

    1.  Does Mandrake have any decent documentation for using any of its GUI networking tools? I have poked around NFS and Samba but have no idea how to "invoke" them like I did the sftp

well, just recently, mandrake published the mdk10.1 manual, maybe you try to visit that one, on mandriva website

    2. Does any one know if the MCC GUI tools work?

have'nt tried the mcc gui tolls yet on configuring samba or nfs, also, personally, have'nt tried yet nfs but i think those tolls will surely work, they would'nt include it in their distro anyway if those were useless

    3. I guess the sftp thing is called ssh? Is NFS or Samba better?

your right, sftp is the secured version of ftp using ssh server, have'nt tried nfs though, but as per linux docs info, nfs is designed to share files between linux or unix system on your network, and samba should be used when mixing windows and linux in your network, those that your windows needed to access shares on linux box and and your linux to windows, but, that does not mean that you cant use samba if you have linux only in your network, they can still shares files thru network using samba

-- advantages and dis-advantages, cant explain, i only used samba, maybe someone here tried nfs

    4. What would best serve a small office network?

    thanks for any help

well, if you have mixed os, win and lin, try samba, if only linux, then try nfs, or maybe use sftp only, if you or someone can correct your first problem

  2. The drakerpm-update command didnt work :( As for connecting to the internet isnt the problem,

its not drakerpm, its drakrpm, well if drakrpm does'nt work, try the mandrakecontrol center, software upgrade  :P

Konqueror wont open at all unless opening the terminal and logging into root and typing konqueror. Thanks for replying though  :thanks:

maybe you should also try to check the security level, maybe it was set to high, that's why you cant use konque as regular user, go to MCC, security, then level check, try the standard level

  3. were you able to connect to the internet already using mdk? if yes, maybe you shoud try to upgrade your packages, you may try the gui way, open MCC, software, upgrade OR

open console, as root, type drakrpm-update, its the same with the first option, then you will be ask for a mirrors or source of updates, try to choose one, then do the updates, it may solve your konque probs...

  4. if you've installed LinNeighborhood, that would do similar to mynetwork place, also, you can browse your windows pc using your konqueror ( if u'r using kde), just open konqueror, then at the location | type : smb://<ip-of-winbox-u-wish-to-connect> then enter, if your trying win2k/xp, it will prompt you to supply a username and password, used the account on your windows box.

if you're trying to browse a linux machine from a network on a linux machine also, you can also use konqueror and type : sftp://<ip-of-that-linux-box> then you can type the username and password of the account you have on that linux box on you network. it will open the home directory of the user u'r using. hope that helps you a little :)

edit: - if you're using linneighborhood and trying to browse another linux box, make sure that you have samba on that box, as with browsing using konqueror by sftp, make sure that an sftp server is running on that box you wish to browse.

if you only trying to browse windows box in your lan from your linux box, Samba server doesnot need to be running, but if you want to access and share your linux files and access it from your windows box, a samba server should run on it. (linux box)

  5. you mean, you made a dual boot , mdk + XP, and now, you can still boot to your xp and want to get rid of mndk? if you want to make a fresh install, when prompted either to upgrade or install, you should choose Install ( this is during mandrake installation ) then make sure you format those /home and / directory.

If you only want to get rid those menu that appears when you boot, those that you installed in the disk MBR (LILO or GRUB), boot with your xp cd and choose R = repair then issue the command fixmbr

btw, try to post your main problem, I think reinstalling or uninstalling mandrake is not your main concern, so, try to elaborate what really is your problem after you have installed mandrake, lots of guys here are always open and willing to help :)

  6. it seems that when you will use the drakbackup util , it will only let you backup the folders of a certain user or under a certain user that you specify to backup using the following compression, tar, tar.gz,tar,bz2... so if I am the one incharge to backup, maybe i'll try #tar czvf company-backup.tar.gz /maindir/company ( my scenario is backing it to other HD)

it will create a file backup.tar.gz containing the company's files and subfolders

also,I forgot how to do it, but I think tar util is capable of incremental compression, and epreserving ownership... maybe if you really want that features, try to read tar manual instead or #man tar

  7. well, you can try samba as primary domain controller so it will auth all windows user and have their home and profile resides in your linux box..

"I would like to replace the current thin clients with full fledged Mandriva 2005"

did you mean, you will be using full pledge desktop pc running Mandriva 2005? thin clients are supposed to have no harddisk, so I assume that you will replace the server OS with mandriva then still using LTSP ( just to avoid confusion)

  8. I don't know about using Nero then k3b. But I experienced burning multisession CD with k3b, and then continue with Nero. No problem at all.

the case is that I have a lot of cdr here that only contains 10mb of data which was started written in M$ by whatever burner, I can add anyfile on it using nero, or sony burning software,... actually, i really dont know what software did they use on burning those disk, well, I have said it, switch to burn

btw, nerolinux is avaible to to those who purchase nero 6 (not oem), to those who have tried it, did it solved the problem presented here?

  9. k, i want to continue to write into a cd using k3b that already have a data via Nero, its like to continue a session using k3b created by nero, when I tried that, I just cant, it seems like I cant open the original session, or is it possible to do that? can k3b be able to continue a session created by other burning software in M$? a :help: is very much appreciated

    TIA

  10. try to check your logs that time you tried to access thru smb and wont be able to get in, of course the firewall should be running so we may see what really happen...

just try as root#tail -f /var/log/messages , then try to access from your linux ur m$box, and observe the logs

  11. amule is the linux version of emule, It's been a years using emule and amule just recently, of course in my mandrake, have'nt used it so much compared to emule in my win box, and what I have observed, downloading mp3 using emule does not do good compared to other peer to peer client software, but if you'll used it to search some reading stuff, like ebook, in MO it's been very nice to used.

  12. I think I was premature in my celebration. I'm back to square one. no ping from linux to my windows machine and the two computers no longer see each other. I'm half tempted to completely delete my current iptable configuration and start from scratch. Suggestions?

k, hope this can help you:

    1. try to stop shorewall to run during star-up, we will try to use rc.firewall

    2. try to create a script named rc.firewall into the directory, /etc/rc.d

    3. comand as root #vi /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall (actually you can name it what ever)

    4. copy and paste the script below and just paste it, it works for me using mndk 10.0

5...anyway, u can just deleit if it will not work

    6. after you created the file rc.firewall with the script on it try#chmod a+x /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall

    7. then you can run it #/etc/rc.d/rc.fiirewall

    8. then you can check iptables -L ---will list the iptables entry

9 . if you want to run it during start-up, try this: #vi /etc/rc.d/rc.local

    10. at the end of the entry of that file, insert /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall

    11. that should start duiring ur pc start

  13. thanks for d reply, with regards to repositories, I'm aware of it, Im using 3.4 on my mdk 10.1, of course, thanks to thac, I dunno if thac already has a 3.4 for 10.0, that was why I only been able to choose the 3.3, anyway Im trying right now to remove all kde packages and will try to reinstall it as what youve said

  14. it was running 3.2 then, but upon knowing that a kde-3.3-thac is available, so I tried or did upgrade the kde packages hoping that since it is for mdk 10.0 it should work fine, but after successfully installing those packages, upon loading the DM, it just freeze, so I've tried to find the remaining 3.2 packages, and replace those with equivalent 3.3, but still does not work, keyboard is dead, and the box used to be an ltsp server for a thin client connecting on it, but after that upgrade of kde, ltsp does not work anymore, iits like that the server becomes so slow that loading the ltsp kernel is very slow or wont be able to load at all.... right now, I still try to correct the problem, maybe I´ ll reinstall the 3.2 package... anyone here successfully installed kde 3.3 on mdk 10.0 OE? or have similar problem and been able to resolved it?

    :help: and :thanks: in advance
