  1. Why is everyone afraid of the cooker, currently it's basically 2006 with KDE 3.5 and all the updates, so now is a pretty good time to upgrade your box if you want a 2006 working KDE 3.5 box. Don't fear the cooker, while there are some applications that can go crazy, the fear surrounding the cooker is mostly hype.

Not afraid with cooker, Its just that, what if 2006 has been installed on a production environment... ? cooker is not for this place, since it needs a system that does not break...

well, it can be installed on a desktop that will serve as answering machine on what really is 2006, those that it boots very fast, that it has the latest kernel, that it has kat on it....

  2. why is it that the default channel of smart pointed to cooker... ???

this should not be like this, since when you accidentally used the smart update then upgrade, it will upgrade directly to cooker.. even in my 2005, when I tried smart, the same thing happen.. it goes directly to cooker.... and when I follow the easyurpmi page and select the smart instead of urpmi option .. it just gave me errors after adding thouse channels.. I think this was the cause of the other post here that he wants his 2006 downgrade from cooker....

  3. further, I wasn't even asked for a user name and passward

if the username and password you are using on your win2k is the same username and password you assign on your smbpasswd file (same linux user-account) that's what would happen.. it wont ask or prompt you any username and password..

ok, if you have'nt visit the samba page, there are lots of example that you can refer, detailed how-to... it might help you further..

    http://us4.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/

  4. ..and was immediately rewarded with viewing the folder "Electraglider" in my nethood on the win2k machine. However, and there is always one of those, ohmy.gif upon attempting to acces that share folder I was presented with a login prompt for user name and password in which I entered my user name and password.

have you tried those users that you wish to have access from network to be added in your smbpasswd file...

    #smbpasswd -a user1

That will let you add the user with username user1 on smbpasswd file ( just guessing you forgot to use it)

  5. The biggest hurdle for me is the ability to read to an NTFS partition whenever I run Linux. Is the latest distro have the capability to read NTFS partitions? I also understand that it cannot write to one (except with the VFAT partition).

The default install can already give you read access to ntfs partition, write access, if you search on this forum, all you get is to have a vfat partition since ntfs support is not that stable yet (write access)

Also, how do I install certain applications (such as Realplayer, Firewall, Antivirus) whenever I'm in Mandriva?

    Realplayer, there's a realplayer for linux... http://www.real.com/linux?pcode=rn&src=fre...eplayer_partner

you can just download the rpm and manually install it, you can also install the helixplayer ( https://player.helixcommunity.org/ ) in your Mandrake Control center - software manager

Firewall.. 2006 hat already an interactive firewall, during install, you will be ask to enable or configure it, so it has already on the package...

Antivirus.. I'm not sure since have not installed it yet... eh.. try clamav, it can be found (am not sure which) on several mandriva repositories.. main, contrib, update

    or try to visit http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/installmdv2006.html

it has lots of mandriva tips and info

  6. Thanks to AussieJohn I am now running 2005LE vice 10.1 and it is running smoothly.

    lavaeolus... that's what Elect's using :P

If I mount it at /mnt/hdb1 I can't share it unless it is in my home directory. If I mount it in my home directory I can't share it because of some application permissions. I checked the permissions for fileshareset and it is user:root, group:root.

when mounting it at hdb1, try to create a folder on it and then give full ownership of that folder to the account you are using or your regular user account...

    say as root:

    #mkdir /mnt/hdb1/sharedfolder

and assuming your regular user is electraglider.. issue command

    #chown electraglider.electraglider /mnt/hdb1/sharedfolder

that way, that folder will be owned by electraglider, so as with your smb.conf, the shared folder path should be /mnt/hdb1/sharedfolder and that will gave you full access on that folder..

Sharing hardrive I think, applies only when you dual-boot win2k and linux... on sharing it in your network, you are just sharing a folder

  7. sorry for not elaborating it clearly

i'm sorry, i don't understand what you mean by "not started my ftp service yet"... does that mean that i have not got an ftp server installed? if that is the case, which ftp package should i install?

might be that after upgrade, some configuration files were set to default, might also be that it was due to your security settings, the system set your box to more secure than your 10.1, so some of the services that you let to run during start-up were set not to start automatically... you can check

    MCC---System---Enable or disable services

you can manually start ftp services there or let it run on start-up ( that if you have an ftp-server installed on your system).. if you have'nt installed any ftp server yet, (and you really want to install even if you can do file transfer using ssh-server) am not familiar what are those ftp-server on mandriva 2006 but you can search for it on your software manager with keyword ftp-server or ftp

    about sftp:

if you want to transfer files from your linux (mandriva) box to your other linux (mandriva2006) box, and assuming that ssh-server has been installed and running ( its running since you have port 22 open), accessing mandriva 2006 from your other linux desktop, you just have to open the konqueror (kde) or nautilus (gnome) then at the address bar, just type

    sftp://ip-of-that-mandriva2006-box

    or

    fish://ip-of-that-mandriva2006-that-runs-ssh-server

then a dialog box will be prompted for you to enter username and password, the username and password is for those users on that mandriva2006 that you have access,

then after that, you can open the home directory of that user you've entered and other folders that are readable or writable of the group where that users belongs.

    why sftp?

its more secure than ftp since ftp transmit your password over the network or internet as plain text, while using ssh or sftp, your password are encrypted or not readable.

ok, for your windows sftp client, you can check

    http://winscp.net/eng/index.php or http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

    they both support sftp
