  1. I'm using Alsa, but I have the first Audigy...not an Audigy 2. I tried the surround settings under alsamixergui, but moving them up and down had no effect at all. This sucks. I was really hoping to turn Mandrake into my main music machine. :(

Do you have a 4.1 setup as well?

  2. I was able to add grip, but when I tried to install kaudiocreator, I got an error message:

    [root@Mandrake kevin]# urpmi kaudiocreator

To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be installed (3 MB) :

    kdemultimedia-kaudiocreator-3.2.3-6.100thac.i586

    libkdemultimedia1-noatun-3.2.3-6.100thac.i586

    libkdemultimedia1-noatun-devel-3.2.3-6.100thac.i586

    Is this OK? (Y/n) y

You may want to update your urpmi database

    What should I do?

  3. Oh, I think I did this today already. I tried adding the contrib, main, and updates, but I just got error messages saying they weren't available or something. How can I check to see if the plf has been added? Is there a command I can type in the console?

  4. Well, I can't do that because the bare speaker wires attach to the sub through terminal clamps. Besides, that would make me feel like I'm lowering my standards (going from 4.1 to 2.0) to work with Linux and I don't want that. Hopefully I'll be able to find something.

  5. Whoa, whoa, whoa! All I was trying to say is I think people bash Windows for no good reason. I like Linux, and you can criticize MS all you want, but I still think Windows 2000 and XP are good OSes. As far as your comment about the stability...I can understand buisnesses wanting their computers to stay up and running for months without a reboot or crash, but does the average desktop user really care about that? I know I don't. I've had Windows 2000 and XP running for months without every experiencing a crash or reboot. Is this significant? Maybe, maybe not. As for the USB issue in Windows NT...NT is not USB compliant. There never was a problem with NT and USB devices...it wasn't built with USB support to begin with. Does this make MS look bad? Probably, but how many threads have been in this forum about Mandrake users having lockups from USB devices?

As far as my crutch comment....maybe there are drivers for every piece of hardware, but if there were, and they all worked correctly, there would be a lot less posts in this forum. What I meant was that until I know how to get Linux to do everything that I need it to do, I will have to keep Windows around. I am new to Linux and thus don't know how to write my own drivers. Bottom line: I like Linux and am eager to learn more about it, but Windows is a great OS too and I don't think it's ok to condemn an entire entity for a few bad experiences. If that were acceptable, Linux wouldn't be around either.

  6. Ok, I read the FAQ on how to set up Samba networking and I did it. I'm networking Mandrake Linux 10.0 to Win2K. Anyway, it went fine. Mandrake could see Windows shares and Windows could see Mandrake shares. I even managed to change the Mandrake workgroup name to match my Windows workgroup name. Anyway, I noticed last night that the shares seem to have disappeared. I opened up Konqueror and clicked on the smb4k icon under /home/kevin and it just displayed a blank screen. I then typed in smb:\ into the URL bar, which also displayed a blank screen. Then I tried going to start>internet>file sharing>smb4k. Normally, this would show my shared directories, or I'd be able to add shared directories, but nothing was displayed. I clicked on the "Home" workgroup (my Windows workgroup) at the top of the screen and it just hanged. I closed it out, reopened it and clicked on the "networking" tab, and it also hanged. What happened to my shared folders? Am I supposed to manually start Samba networking after each restart? Is there something I forgot to do? A friend of mine running Linspire told me that you have to manually map the shared folders and somehow save the configuration, or else the shared directories will appear blank the next time you login to check them. Please help. :juggle:

  7. That's odd. My server is running Win2K and my desktop is Mandrake 10.0. My router is a Netgear. If I use the web interface (192.168.0.1) to get to it, I can and everything is just fine. However, if I try to do it from Mandrake, I can get inside the router, but some of the menus and options are missing. Maybe it's the way the browsers process the page??

Also, are you trying to open the page while another computer has it open? I've found that if I'm logged into my router with one PC, I can't log into it from the other one until I log off of the first one. My Linksys router wasn't like that, but then again, that router was crap.
