  1. Worked great! Thanks a million! I was trying to use smb, btw.
  2. I've got an "archive" hard drive for all my ISO files, MP3s, blah blah. I'm trying to share the entire hard disk (it's just one partition, /mnt/hd) but it won't let me because it's not in my home files. Can anyone help? Thanks!
  3. K... aRts controls volume pretty decently, but now XMMS is slow to play songs, it takes a couple of seconds for them to load. What's up?
  4. Oh, here's some more notes. I'm using the latest version of XMMS compled from source (something dot something dot 10) and XMMS + KDE are both being instructed to use the OSS output.
  5. Yeah, thanks. I got sounds in KDE now, but I still cannot adjust the volume from within XMMS
  6. Here's my output from configure your computer -> hardware -> sound card Vendor: ‎Silicon Integrated Systems [siS] Alternative drivers: ‎ali5455:i810_audio:nvaudio Bus: ‎PCI Bus identification: ‎1039:7012:1849:7012 Location on the bus: ‎0:2:7 Description: ‎SiS7012 PCI Audio Accelerator Module: ‎snd-intel8x0 Media class: ‎MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO First off, it's incorrectly detecting the module currently used, it's using OSS "i810_audio", the default is snd-intel8x0. I got some speakers today and when I plugged them in I got a huge WHINE out of all speakers. I rebooted and as soon as ALSA was loaded it did it again, so I switched to this OSS driver, but I don't get sounds in KDE, I get sound through XMMS but I cannot adjust the voltume which is VERY important. Can anyone help?
  7. I installed Java, but LimeWire gives me the same message. I think I need to add a PATH= extension somewhere, but I'm unsure how. Also, I configured Java for Mozilla, and Mozilla shows that I've got the Java plugin installed, but when I go to their Java test page, or any other page with Java, Mozilla just dies. It exits without an error, the Mozilla window is there -- then it's gone.
  8. That removes all my icons. Not only the "Hard Disc" icon, but ALL of them. I need a few of those ;)
  9. [kenton@storage images]$ chmod 755 LimeWireLinux.bin [kenton@storage images]$ ./LimeWireLinux.bin Preparing to install... Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive... Configuring the installer for this system's environment... No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH environment variable. You must install a VM prior to running this program. What Java should I use?
  10. I've done almost a mirror image of this thread. I had a 40GB boot drive (WXP/MDK 10) then I added another 40GB. Formatted it FAT32 under Linux, works great in Linux/Windows, but a "Hard Disc" (it's a hard DISK if anything) icon has popped up on my desktop and I can't get it to go away. It's a direct link to the storage hard drive, but I don't need a link on my desktop. Can anyone help me remove it?
  11. I'm just lucky it takes so little time these days to install Windows. I remember installing Windows 98 on my old K6-2, then it took another year to apply all the updates. heh.
  12. Yes, the offending Windows computer had shares properly setup. I was using the proper login and password for the Windows computer, as well. It seems my other Windows computer wasn't seeing it in Network Neighborhood, either. Funny thing was, the offending Windows computer was still able to use network resources (internet/printing.) I popped in my XP Corp CD and reinstalled it, applied SP2, disabled Windows firewall and configured Norton and my Linux computer was finally able to mount shares. In addition, the other Windows computer was able to see the previously offending Windows computer. All is well.
  13. Windows firewall is off. Norton Firewall is on, implicitly allowing 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254. The Windows boxes aren't using default "Workgroup" I'll probably just reinstall Windows on the offending computer and see where that takes me
  14. My network is like this Hub ---- PC3 | \ PC1 PC2 PC1 is Windows XP Prof w/ SP2 and all newest updates. PC2 is likewise. PC3 is MDK 10. All 3 computers have IP addresses, all 3 can access the internet but one of my Windows boxes Linux can't see. It'll see it in SMB4K but it can't talk to it. The other Windows box is fine, it can talk and mount shares and all that good stuff. Basically, both Windows computers are pretty much configured identically, but my Linux computer can't access the shares on one of my Windows computers. I checked the firewall, the passwords, pretty much everything. I just get an error that my Linux computer can't connect to my Windows computer. They ping, and my Windows computer has no problem using the Linux printer, basically, it's not a network issue, it's somewhere else. Linux to Windows 1 -> Works fine. Linux to Windows 2 -> Windows 2 can access Linux printer/files/etc, Linux can't access Windows.
  15. Hell with this setup I can only get 800x600x32 w/ no antialiasing Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ (1.8volts, 200x11) 512MB Dual Channel Kingston HyperX PC3500 ATi Radeon 9600 (np) 128MB
  16. I edited /etc/resolv.conf and Linux changed it back upon reboot. It's being changed before /etc/resolv is being loaded. Any more ideas? [copy of preceding post removed by spinynorman - please use 'add reply' button]
  17. I've got a generic 10/100 5 port hub connecting three computers. Two Windows, one Linux. One of the Windows computers is 192.168.0.1 because it provides the internet access. I don't have a router because I'm still 56k at home. No DSL/cable offered, only $600 up-front satellite. :\ [copy of preceding post removed by spinynorman]
  18. Mandrake X keeps resetting my primary DNS server to 127.0.0.1. I've set it to 192.168.0.1 a million times, and everytime I reboot it's back to 127.0.0.1. My network/internet still works, but it takes a minute because Linux keeps looking at localhost for a DNS entry then waits on it to fail, then talks to 192.168.0.1. How can I keep my primary DNS (DNS server 1) at 192.168.0.1? TIA
  19. Which VNC server should I use to connect my Linux machine to my Windows box so I can control the Windows box? Mandrake has default VNCs installed, and I just need to know which version is compatable with Windows?
  20. MDK found and configured my printer perfectly, now I'm wondeirng how I share this to my local Windows computers on my LAN? Thanks! [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  21. Do you know when the next public release of Mandrake is coming out? I'm 56k with no alternative options but satellite internet, and I can't front the $600 for that, so in other words, I often buy the downloadable images on CD from cheapbytes, or other sources.
  22. Yes, I'm using KDE. I've read that there's a Theme Manager option under Look/Feel under Config your Desktop. But I still cannot find it?
  23. I just did a pretty default install of Mandrake X, with some of the optional packages selected (BitchX, GAIM, etc. . .). I cannot find the "Theme Manager" menu in Configure your Computer. I've downloaded a few themes and extracted them to the Theme directory, but I still can't find the actual Theme Manager to switch themes. Can anyone help? Thanks!
