  1. Mandrake 10 with KDE 3.2. If I align my desktop icons vertically and then attempt Align To Grid the icons are spaced too closely together.

    Adding the following to /usr/share/config/kdeglobals does not change the horizontal or vertical grid:

    [DesktopIcons]

    DesktopGridSpacing=50,50

    Adding the following to /usr/share/config/kdeglobals does not change the vertical grid but it does change the horizontal grid:

    [DesktopIcons]

    GridXSpacing=50

    GridYSpacing=50

    Any ideas how the vetical grid spacing can be altered?

  2. I just installed MDK 10 using a Athlon 1400 with a ASUS board and 512 DDR. I have been up and running about 4 weeks without a problem.

    I am a complete llinux noob, so I my suggestion is more like a guess:

    Could it be that MDK 10 needs more than 256 MB of RAM to install? If you have been specifying KDE during the install, try using gnome instead. This should reduce your RAM needs.

  3. Ixthusdan:

    I downloaded the updates from the ftp site you linked to and burned them to a CD. After adding the CD within Media Manager, I was able to install the files.

    Everything appeared to install OK, however, I did see this error on completion:

    there was a problem during the installation

    ....retrieving falied: curl failed: exited with 7 or signal 0

    If I return to Mandrake Update, it no longer lists any needed updates. So I am assuming that my installation went OK. Is there a way to check?

  4. Noob here.

    I like your idea. I do not have a servicemenus directory in the location you mention, so I created one and inserted the 2 files. This didn't work.

    I had a brief look at the link you posted, and they mentioned using: /usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus. I do have this directory, so I inserted the 2 files here. Still didn't work.

    Any ideas?

  5. I recently installed Mandrake 10. Last night I attempted to use Mandrake Update. The size of many of the updates makes the updating process difficult, as I am still on dialup. Is there a better way? I have access to high speed internet at work on a W2K box.

  6. Well after much effort I have simply given up and installed the Plastik theme.

    I am not sure if the problem is with KDE or firefox, but I simply could not change the color of the drop down menus or the mouseover on these menus. I again have no problem changing this color on a W2K box with mozilla.

    Anyway, the Plastik theme looks nice with KDE and I am happy.

  7. I am running Mandrake 10 with firefox 0.9.3. I have been playing with the userchrome.css file to perform some customizations.

    I am able to change the color of the progress bar in the lower right-hand corner without trouble. However, if I try to change the color of the drop-down menus, it seems firefox ignores my request and stays with the default color.

    When I use the same userchrome.css file on a W2K box with Mozilla, it works fine. Any suggestions?

  8. Noob here. When I installed Mandrake 10 several weeks ago I found that setserial was not in the 3 installations CD's I was using. When I attempted to install it, Mandrake asked for CD number 4??

    I downloaded a setserial rpm package file (setserial-2.17-7mdk.i586.rpm) off of the web after doing a google search. I needed this to get my USR PCI hardware modem to work.

  9. bvc:

    yes, the offending modem was a 5610B

    playing around with the sidepane, I was able to get the explorer type view I wanted

    to remove the floppy icon, i edited fstab and replaced the floppy related line with:

    /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto defaults,noauto,sync,user 0 0

    this removed the icon

    a right click on the desktop enables me to select floppy, at which point the icon will reappear

    a right click on the floppy icon allows me to select eject, at which point the icon disappears

    and so I am happy :thumbs:

  10. Thanks for all the warm welcomes.

    Right clicking on the floppy icon does not give me the option to delete. I will look into using the fstab file.

    Regarding the explorer view, I did not see any File Browser option in Nautilus....

    Lastly, regarding the PCI modem that Linux would not recognize. The modem is a US Robotics hardware modem.

  11. Greetings all from a longtime windows user who boldly took the plunge and installed Mandarake 10.

    This looks like a useful forum, and I thought I would make my first post a combination of observations and questions.

    I was hoping/antiicipating that Linux would recognize my PCI hardware modem during installation. It didn't happen, and I had to run setserial. Unfortunately, this was not included in the 3 installation CD's. Though easily located with a quick google, this sort of hassle is why many people are afraiid to try Linux.

    I installed Firefox without a hitch. I am a long time Mozilla user and I love this browser.

    My next step was to install a firewall. Firestarter seems to have issues with the 2.6 kernel, and I couldn't get it to work. GuardDog is now installed and appears to be functioning.

    Why is there a floppy icon on my desktop? I would like to remove this, but a search of this forum and the web did not reveal any solution.

    Maybe I have been using Windows too long, but I am very comfortable with Windows Explorer file management. I like the 2 pane view where the directories are shown on the left and the individual files are shown on the right. Is there a way to do this using gnome?

    Thanks for reading. I am looking forward to becoming a longtime member of this forum.
